Arya Stark in Game of Thrones S7 E4 âThe Spoils of War.â
The making of âThe Queen of Ashesâ....
The show has been telling us about D@enerys ending for quite long time, in fact, as I was rewatching the show, I found several scenes foreshadowing D@enerys tragic ending (here) but in this post I will focus on the most eye catching onesâŠ.
SEASON 1Â
In the finale episode of season 1, Dany decides to kill Khal Drogo and burn his body next to her dragon eggs. She lays next to him and promises to reunite with him one day âWhen the sun rises in the west and sets in the eastâ.Â
The next scene happens in Kings Landing Kings Landing with Maester Pyrcelle and Ross in his room; he is remembering the Mad King and what likeable and charming man he used to be in his youth, before madness took over him.
The episode ends with D@enerys entering the fire pyre to eventually hatch the eggs and give birth to 3 dragons. She had this idea from a dragon dream in the early nights.
SEASON 2Â
On episode 4, D@enerys arrives in Qarth and they dont want to let her in, thats the first time she threats to burn down a city and destroy completely. This wont be the last time D@enerys threatens to burn a city to the ground.
SEASON 2
On episode 5, Tyrion finds out all the wildfire that its under Kings Landing, he mentions that its enough Wildfire to destroy all city. Look whats the next scene, D@enerys teaching baby Drogon to say Dracarys for the first time!!! How sweet.Â
SEASON 3
On episode 4, Varys tries to alert Lady Ollena of how dangerous Littlefinger is. Pay attention at the words he uses to describe Littlefinger, those are the exact same words Tyrion used to describe D@enerys when he met her in Meeren.
Varys was afraid that Littlefinger would destroy the realm trying to get the Iron Throne, so he decided to bring D@enerys to Westeros, ironically, she will be the one turning the kingdom into ashes.
And here is something even better, this episode S3E4 ends with D@enerys literally acquiring her first army. She sacks Astapor and leaves with the Unsulied, getting her first army in order to invade Westeros.
SEASON 5
Episode 9, right after the scene where Stannis burns down Sheereen at the stake as a sacrifice for the Lord of Light, they cut to the scene in Meereen where D@enerys and Hizdahr are presenting to the reopening of the Fighting Pits. During their conversation D@enerys explain that destroying an entire city it may be necessary in order to achieve something great.
This dialogue pretty much sums up D@enerys as a character. She is starting to rationale the idea of burning cities to the ground in order to achieve her own objectives, as something necessary, while not realizing that she is losing her humanity, just like those men who are fighting in the pits. She is using excuses of a greater cause to justify the deaths of millions.
SEASON 6
D@enerys returns to Meereen and finds the city being attacked by the Masters of the rival cities. She then tells Tyion about her plans against the attack.
Thats her plan, that is always her plan. She doesnt have others ideas. D@enerys first instintic is always destruction, its her advisers who always have to hold her back. This is the second time she threatens to turn a city into dust, the next time, no one will be able to stop her. Kings Landing will turn into ashesâŠ..
BTW, there is much more than this. I just gathered the most important ones, but the show has left SO MANY hints and little clues about who will be the one destroying Kings Landing, that I am always shocked that many find this theory crazy.Â
It is also noteworthy that the Doom of Valyria is introduced in Daenerysâ very first chapter in A Game of Thrones:
Inside the manse, the air was heavy with the scent of spices, pinchfire and sweet lemon and cinnamon. They were escorted across the entry hall, where a mosaic of colored glass depicted the Doom of Valyria. (AGoT, Daenerys I)
This is where she meets Khal Drogo for the very first time. I donât think it is a coincidence that the Doom of Valyria, the place her family came from and the Doom they escaped, is brought up (even through an artistic representation) at the very moment that Danyâs narrative journey begins. She has had Doom written all over her character from the very start and the ominous dragon dreams she has just reinforces this sense of doom with her dreaming that the world catches fire beneath her dragon wings and that she dreams that she is Rhaegar, the Last Dragon.
What I love about this is that you brought up the quote where Dany justifies the killing of innocents in her pursuit of burning down cities. She justifies it as âdying for a good reasonâ but is anger and revenge good reason? The other side of that is how both fans and characters view her as a champion of the people. Especially with the downtrodden. Her affinity for the smallfolk has been her leading trait as a ruler and Tyrion describes her as âsomeone who protects people from monstersâ. But once anger and the idea of burning cities comes into play, suddenly the small folk donât matter. Thousands of smallfolk would dies in comparison to a few hundred lords/nobility class, who are usually the target for Danyâs anger. Thereâs a million people in Kingslanding and about 98% of that are common to smallfolk. Its what blows my mind in season 8 where she claims she isnât a good Queen if she doesnât risk her life and follows that up with threatening to burn the Red Keep down when a majority of people in the Red Keep are commonfolk and smallfolk. (Also she threatens to burn down the Red Keep about two to three times in season 8. Like⊠blatant foreshadowing.)
The main point: as much as the smallfolk love her and she sees herself as their protector (or other characters do), they are still disposable to her when its convenient. It makes her no different than the other volatile lords and ladies, even with her noble intent in the beginning. Like Jon says: âif you go in and melt castles, youâre no different. Youâre just more of the same.â
