Y/n’s pov
I had never really been popular. But I wasn’t a loser either. I had friends, some that were really close to me and some I would just speak to if I was in school. So when I got invited to one of the biggest parties of the year hosted by one of the football jocks, I wasn’t really too over the moon about it. Obviously, I was happy that I had been invited, and I was excited to go, but I wasn’t overthinking it. Unlike Malcolm. Malcolm and I had met when he was tutoring me in history; we were in the same class, so that helped, but when I first found out that it was he who would be tutoring me, I wasn’t really thrilled. Everyone that I had spoken to about it warned me that he was weird and a bit of a dick because he believed that he was smarter than everyone else. And really, they weren’t wrong. The first few weeks were absolute torture. He was saying stuff that I just didn’t understand, and when I would ask him what he was going on about, he would look at me like he had already dumbed it down. Eventually, though, we bonded over our hatred of some annoying students who were also in our history class, and we found common ground. After eventually getting to know him, I realised he wasn’t as bad as everyone said. Sure, he did think that everyone was an idiot and that he was way too good for most people, but I found his rants funny, so I stuck around. When Malcolm got an invite, he made it his mission to let me know straight away. He had practically run over to my locker and shut it in my face to brag about getting an inviation and that he was sure that this was his way to finally fit in with others and to actually have a normal experince. I was happy for him. I had always felt bad that he didn’t have that many friends in school, but again, I wasn’t surprised because normal, popular high schoolers didn’t always want to hang around someone always correcting or making them feel stupid. But I was happy, of course I was.
The week before the party, that was the only thing that Malcolm would talk about. We would be sitting at lunch, and he would mention what he wanted to wear, what cologne he was going to pick out and just random shit like that. I always made sure to tell him that he was definitely overthinking the whole thing and that it was just a high school party. But whenever I tried to bring him back to reality, he would always use the argument that this was his one and only chance to get in with the popular people. All hell broke lose when he found out that people were taking dates, and by people, I meant most of all the boys that would be attending. And god forbid Malcolm didn’t do the same. We had been in his room “studying”, which normally meant that I would just be lying on his bed doing whatever while he would be actually studying. But Stevie had, of course, let it slip that people were bringing dates and Malcolm, well, he went into Malcolm mode. He practically threw the book and started pacing his room, shouting shit like “I can’t be the only one without a date!” “I’m gonna show up and look like a total loser, and then that will be the talk of the school, and then no girl will want to go out with the double loser who couldn’t even get a date!” While he was pacing and still shouting nonsense, I just let out a sigh and rolled my eyes. “Dude, calm down, so what if you don’t get a date? Most people will be too drunk to even notice, I’m sure you’ll be fine”. Malcolm spun on his heel and glared at me “That's not the point. The point is this is my big chance, and I’m not risking ruining it by not showing up with a girl”. While I got comfy again on his bed, Stevie thankfully chipped in. “Yeah…and…what…girl…would…want…to…go…with…you?” Malcolm, who had again gone back to pacing, just shook his head. “I’m sure I’ll be able to get at least one girl who will want to go with me. It can’t be that hard”
But sadly for him, it was that hard. Every girl that he asked either just straight up told him no and quickly walked away, or they were already taken. He walked over to the table and slammed his head down. “That’s it, it’s official, the world hates me and never wants to see me happy. I’m going to show up to that party and be a complete laughing stock”. I put my sandwich down and softly looked at him. I would be lying if I said I didn’t have a little crush on Malcolm, and seeing him genuinely upset about something. Even as stupid as this. Did make me feel horrible for him; he did somehow always have the short end of the stick when it came to stuff like this. “Ugh, fine, listen, if this really is something that matters to you, then you can take me to the party. So you don’t look like a complete loser”. Malcolm lifted his head up slightly and locked eyes with me. “Really?” I just shrugged and nodded “, Yeah, why not? We’re both going anyway, and it’s starting to annoy me how worked up you’re getting about this, so yes, I’ll be your date to the party”. Malcolm, for maybe the first time in the whole week, gave me a smile and sat up straight. “Thanks, Y/n”.
The day of the party came about, and I was way more excited about it than I really should have been. Sure, the little “date” Malcolm and I were going on was fake, and he didn’t see me like how I saw him, but a girl can be hopeful. And hopeful was what I was. I spent way too much time getting ready than I should have, but I wanted to look and feel pretty. I put on my favourite dress, and I pulled out my most expensive make-up just for the occasion. After 15 minutes of just sitting around and waiting for word from Malcolm, my mom shouted down from the kitchen that I had missed a call and that I had a voicemail waiting for me. I knew it would most likely be Malcolm, so I sprinted downstairs and quickly grabbed the phone, hoping that the call I had missed would just be him telling me he was getting ready to leave and that I should get ready to leave as well, but what I heard wasn’t what I had been prepared for at all. “Hey, y/n, it’s Malcolm! Great news, one of the girls I had asked just broke up with her boyfriend and has just agreed to go as my date, so we don’t have to go together anymore. Anyway, see you there”. I put the phone back on the wall and just stared at it for a few seconds before I felt tears starting to form in my eyes. I quickly blinked them away, trying to get a hold of myself. I didn’t realise why I was being so overdramatic about the situation; it wasn’t like it was a real date anyway. He just saw me as a friend… But I still felt hurt by the way he was just more than willing to dump me so that he could go with another girl, and why probably because she was more popular than me. My sadness mixed with anger fast. I was about to just go upstairs and just get ready for bed and not even go until I passed a mirror and saw myself. I looked pretty, I felt pretty, and I realised that I shouldn’t let that idiot ruin my night. So I grabbed my bag, said goodbye to my mother, and started making my way to the party.
Thankfully, the party was only a few blocks away from me, so it wasn’t that far of a walk, but because I was wearing heels, my feet had slightly begun to hurt when I finally arrived. The party looked like something you would see in a stupid high school movie. There were people standing outside drinking and smoking, and I could already hear the loud ass music. I again thought about just turning back and going home, but I realised I was already there, so I just had to commit. When I walked into the house, thankfully, I bumped into some girls I was friendly with in my English class. For the first hour I was mostly with them, I would wonder off a little when I needed a refil of my drink, but I stuck with them. But then that’s when I saw them. Malcolm and a random blonde girl, whose name I didn’t even know. She was gorgeous, I couldn’t deny that, but it still made my heart sink a little seeing Malcolm and her together, when I knew it should have been me. I couldn’t pry my eyes off them, and just when I thought it couldn’t get worse, she turned around and kissed him. And he kissed her back. That was my last straw. “Fuck this”, I just dumped my cup on the ground and walked out I wasn’t being in there knowing that that was going on.
“Y/n!”, “Y/n! Hey, where are you going?” I turned around, and right there was the dickhead. I didn’t even spare him a second glance as I continued walking, “I’m going home. Bye”. Malcolm stopped walking and looked confused. “Are you annoyed?” I turned on my heel and glared at him, “For someone so smart, you really are acting quite dumb”. He just again stood looking confused and a little annoyed. “What is up with you? It’s been a good party, I thought you would be happy that it’s going well for me”. I let out a scoff, “Oh yeah, I’m so happy that you picked little Miss Barbie doll over there over me” Malcolm rolled his eyes and started walking closer. “I don’t actually understand why you're upset. You even said you were only going to go with me because no one else would. And what was I supposed to say when she phoned this is my...” Before he could finish, I cut him off. “Oh yes, how could I forget this is Malcolm's big moment, god forbid I ruin his big moment. And you idiot, I don’t just offer to go on dates with random people, obviously I like you, why else did you think I hang out with you like all the time, or listen to your stupid rants about stuff I don’t even understand, or just come over to yours and get comfy on your bed, but sorry, sorry I thought that I even had a chance. Go enjoy your big moment. Remember me, maybe when you're big and popular, yeah?” I said, sarcasm dripping from my mouth as I started to walk again. Malcolm came out of his thirty-second trance and started jogging so that he was now walking right next to me. “You like me?” I didn’t even give him a second glance as I continued to walk.
“I just gave you a full rant, I’m not repeating myself, and I can’t remember half of what I just said”. Malcolm rolled his eyes and stopped in front of me, making me stop. “Why didn’t you tell me?” “Oh, I don’t know, just didn’t find the right time to squeeze it into conversation”. “Can you be serious for like a second?” “I let out another scoff “Why do you even care? You’ve got your girl waiting for you at the party?” Malcolm stared at me like he normally did when his brain was going a mile a minute, but he eventually shook himself and just stared at me like I had said the most stupid thing ever. “That’s not my girl. Listen, I just thought..or well..Actually, I don’t know, okay! I’m sorry, but I panicked. I realised that if I took you to the party, I would most likely do something to embarrass myself, and I didn’t want you to see me embarrass myself because, as much as I hate to admit it, I like you. And respect you more than the average person, so yes, I panicked and made a really stupid decision by going with her rather than just growing a back bone”. We stood in scilence for a few seconds before I let out a sigh and shook my head slightly. “Are you going to come back to the party?” I again shook my head “no I’m still going home, not my style”. And as I started so slowly walk again Malcolm followed. “You think I could join?” “Fine but you should probably say bye to Barbie”. “She’ll be fine”
