i had to leave earlier so i didn't finish the robin episode (devastatingly) and yeah. that broke me. favorite episode in a long while. i love robin so so much. imagine being told throughout the most formative years of your life that you don't deserve to live / that you're evil / that you're scum and the whole world is literally out to get you. you have nowhere safe to go, no one to lean on, no one to trust. you want to die but you keep holding on to the Chance to find the friends you were promised existed, because your mom asked you to but even that is growing fainter by the day. LIKE. robin's backstory and how it weaves into meeting luffy and the strawhats, seeing how they barely knew vivi and they risked everything to save alabasta. and then the full circle of seeing saul again and asking him to praise her for staying alive because it was literally blood, sweat and tears. anyways i'm insane and it's making me think more about iselda, re. her thoughts on ohara. so more iseldalore coming at you because now i feel that there's more clicking into place for her. why she became a marine, what she's after, why she's so bent on it. anyways anyways. i love robin sobs

Real thing that changed how i write: I started asking "what does this character think is wrong with them" and separately "what is actually wrong with them." Those two things are almost never the same. She thinks she's too much. She's actually terrified of being too little. He thinks he's bad at commitment. He's actually just never met someone he trusted enough. The gap between their diagnosis of themselves and the real thing, that's your character arc right there. you don't have to explain it. just write both.

sometimes i have strong opinions but they're also so inane that halfway through writing a post i'll be like "yeah, this is Absolutely not worth the energy it's taking" and delete everything. but then the opinion is still in my head. and i still want to share it. so within five minutes i go "you know, i bet i can phrase it more succinctly this time" and anyway. you all see where this is going. sometimes i do this four times in a row before i give up on the specific inane opinion and instead write a vague post about the concept of opinions as if that'll satisfy the urge to post the entirety of my inner monologue online. may or may not be relevant to what you're reading right now. and now all our lives have been enriched. you're welcome

real question: how do you guys deal with wanting to write a ship that you used to write with former writing partners? moreso with oc/canon (but even sometimes with canon/canon) because i lowkey feel guilty when i want to write the dynamic again but i only wrote it with one other person and i don’t want anyone to feel like i’m recycling plots but also sometimes the plot was really good and it’d be unique anyways because it’s with a new individual. idk if i am making sense but how do you guys deal with that?

i DO believe that a good writer can make mischaracterization work. oh there's a character who doesn't normally cry? figure it out!! disect the character. make the situation cryable for them. make that character cry ugly tears even if it goes against their very nature. YOU CAN MAKE IT WORK!!!

A great piece of advice I've seen is "Don't fixate about what the character would never do. Think about the circumstances that would drive them to do this, even if they wouldn't normally."
