If Amy doesnt end up having any powers like her game counterpart, I can totally see a story coming out of it too with Metal and Sonic.
Movie Sonic is the fastest creature in the universe and his power is immense, but now that Metal is here and can replicate that speed and trying to prove he is the real Sonic, I can totally see our Sonic wanting to defeat him through his powers and the ability to surpass his own skills. When it comes to Amy, I expect her greatest strength to be her empathy and kind nature. Her soul is so good and having the ability to love and care for others is the quality that makes someone truly especial and alive. This is something that only one of the two Sonics can do and its not Metal. Maybe Sonic will learn that the reason he is the real Sonic and the reason why he is the best version is not because of his power, but because he is alive and therefore has the ability to love and protect others. He has the ability to feel.
Metal is supposed to be full of hatred and focuses on power, but Amy is supposed to be the opposite. She is full of love and Sonic will value her so much for that despite the fact she doesnt have powers. He will see that despite that her not having any powerful abilities of her own, she is proof that what makes her truly especia is her empathy and care towards others.
I loved the point you raised about Sonic vs. Metal Sonic because I think that's going to be the big Man vs. Self conflict of the movie. That Sonic relies so much on his powers and his "greatest asset"—his abilities, which have been highlighted since the first movie, by the way—that he forgets that his greatest ability is to show compassion and inspire others around him. Especially because I think Sonic will reach his emotional limit and want to bottle up everything he feels.
Amy having powers in this scenario, in my opinion, only amplifies this message. Because just think, Amy, even with the ability to bend time (to some degree, if her hammer in the teaser breaking the fabric of space-time is any indication), something so grand, still encounters limitations, still insufficient because kindness and empathy are her greatest asset.
Of course, Amy may not have any inherent superpowers; it's a possibility. I only thought of her having some temporal control because I'm tired of seeing girls having a "super heart" as their only trait. Of course, empathy is an unparalleled strength, but having powers doesn't diminish the brilliance of this primary characteristic; it can enhance it! Gives her nuance.
Especially if Amy's powers are some extension of clairvoyance (even if she's an empath herself, following the theme of emotions). Tails has super intelligence and a non-combat power, something Amy's predictive abilities could play a similar role in, balancing the group. IF they give Amy time control, she will clearly have stronger limitations because it's a very complicated power.
But yes! Amy will certainly have her unconditional empathy and love as her greatest power of all, and I hope to see her inspire not only Sonic, but everyone around her, being the best she can be: the light and heart of the heroes' team!
