Finally saw Supergirl. With all the people on YouTube I saw peddling video essays hailing it the worst thing the superhero genre has ever pumped out, I went in apprehensive despite not even clicking on any of them.
But Supergirl was good. It was fun and wild and chaotic. I loved the bus jacking, and the final fight scene was the perfect “Kryptonian fight from outside perspective”. With the Middle playing in the background and Ruthye being so overwhelmed but so brave as the world burned around her, I couldn’t help but think, this is exactly what being a middle school girl felt like, somehow. That’s the vibe of being thirteen and a girl.
This really was a super movie for girls. And I really liked it.
I also think people’s reactions to it is a great litmus test of whose media opinions are worth listening to.
