Brinkburst growled upon seeing the pictograms and the writing. âThis is newer style, soâs I cân make it out better⌠and let me tell ya, the story doesnâ sound promisinâ.â
âHow so?â Doubletap was already apprehensive.
âTurns out, what happened ta Conquerer Prime⌠got less anâ less pleasant. Anâ you wonâ believe this⌠it all ends in a cliffhanger.â
Midpoint looked pleadingly at Brinkburst, desperately hoping for anything that could be interpreted as good news about her conjunx; while some of the mechanisms in the door began to spin again and creakily unlock, there were a lot yet left, and Yellowjacketâs work was slow going overall.
Fritz had settled atop Brinkburst, leaning forward on the behemothâs turret and resting his chin on two of his forearms, the other two servos hanging down from where he laid. This news was troubling, and Fritz battled himself, his cowardly instincts taking over while his promise to Midpoint re-emerging in his processor. âWhat does it say?â he asked hesitantly, clearly not really wanting to know the answer.
Yellowjacket huffed irritably as he worked. He was able to work some of the doorâs mechanisms, but it was taking forever, and he was annoyed at the slow progress. âWhat is up with this stupid door!â he snapped after a few kliks. Blockbuster moved forward to lay a comforting servo on his shoulder, and he ground his dentals before getting back to work. Firebomb had migrated toward the back of the group. She could run now, easily. She didnât. There was an imminent âI told you soâ moment, she was sure of it, and she meant to take that opportunity before she got the Pit out of here.
âSays Conquerer wound up wiâ⌠a curse. From tamperinâ wiâ things what he was not meant ta. The detailsâre not so clear and⌠BEARINGS OF SOLOMUS! EVERYONE DOWN!â
He transformed to robot mode and shielded Fritz with his body just as the last gears in the door fell into place to the sound of a distant whoosh and thud. When the door slid open an immense torrent of jagged blades poured forth, threatening to flay anyone who stood in their path.
âA curse?â Fritz didnât like this at all. âMaybe we should go -â And then Brinkburst cut him off and he yelped in surprise, servos automatically coming up to cling to the larger mech when he was shielded, helm finding its place against Brinkburstâs chest. He was shivering with fear, not thinking about how he was pressed against the large mech.
Yellowjacket, doing what he could with this door, knew what was going to happen before it did. âBlockbuster! Get back!â It was his words more than the way he shoved the constructribot that got Buster to stumble backwards. Luckily, Yellowjacket followed quickly enough that the blades didnât get him, either. âWhat the frag,â he snapped, even as he was pulled into an embrace by Blockbuster, the taller bot leaning down to wrap his arms around the mini who came only up to his thigh.
The storm of metal died down, and Brinkburst rose, grimacing, prepared to see the worst, but in fact everyone had gotten away with little more than minor dings from a projectile graze, all having hit the deck and rolled to a corner in time.
âWell. So much fer killinâ us all with THAT trap, huh? Câmon, forward.â The colossus got to his pedes again and led the way once his point people Midpoint and Yellowjacket had caught up.
This passageway was dark - a kind of cloying and weighing darkness that even powerful headlights couldnât do much against. Brinkburst and Doubletap independently suspected the dark to have been augmented somehow, by the mystery technology that so much of this place seemed to run on. At some length Midpointâs open servo shot to her mouth.
âI may be convincing myself too much⌠making myself hear things that arenât there⌠but I think thatâs Dragadeâs distress signal on my comm.â
Yellowjacket had to pull himself out of Blockbusterâs arms, the constructibot clinging to him. âItâs okay, weâre fine, the trapâs done,â Yellowjacket insisted, reaching up to cup Blockbusterâs cheeks. âIâm fine.â YJ pressed a swift kiss to Blockbusterâs lips before extricating himself and catching up with Brinkburst.
Fritz was startled at the loss of shield, and also, well, the contact itself. He scrambled to the back of the group, which left him next to - Firebomb. Oh, frag. She gave him an unimpressed look as they all moved forward.
âYouâre sure a waste of space, arenât you,â Â she said, sounding almost bored. Fritz wilted and stuttered, all four servos wringing at each other.
âI - well I um - I -Â â
Yellowjacket, meanwhile had moved to Midpointâs side. âWhatâs she saying?â
âI canât make it out,â replied Midpoint. âBut I would know the tones of her signal anywhere. Itâs faint. I donât know quite where itâs coming from⌠but itâs just further forward, I think.â
Brinkburst was on guard; he had switched to tank mode preemptively, and Doubletap was ready to change to cannon mode in an instant.
Then the tank thought he noticed something; one of the cave walls looked⌠well⌠funny. So he rammed it.
And the fake wall crumbled. Right past it was light, and⌠treasure. Uncountable piles of raw and refined gems, mostly, but enough to pay for quite a lot of retirements.
âSo she IS here.â Fritz sighed in relief. âSo we find her and then we can get out of hereââ Fritz was tired of all this scary stuff happening, artifact be damned. Firebomb rolled her optics at him.
âNot yet, Fritz, first we gotta find - â Yellowjacket began, cutting himself off with a sharp gasp when Brinkburst found the hidden treasure room. âHoly PIT, itâs the motherlode!â Yellowjacket scrambled in, scanning for traps and nearly bouncing in his excitement. Even Blockbusterâs optics had widened, filling his face, and Fritz forgot his fear as he stared.
âThisâll be thâ distraction,â Brinkburst mused. âYer avârage tomb robberâs gonna get ta this point, think thisâs thâ real treasure, anâ leave with an armful. Never disturbinâ the cup.â
âWait.â Midpoint stared at the center of the pile. âThe gems are having a damping effect, so itâs hard to tell - but⌠Dragade seems to be under there. Can⌠can we try to get to the center?â
Doubletap smiled her strange smile and switched to cannon mode, the air around her beginning to whirr. âFirebomb remembers,â she said, âthat itâs not ordinary weapon I transform into, but a wind cannon.â
âHere, Iâve got a plan,â Fritz said, moving further into the room, toward one of the corners where a smaller heap of treasure lay. âIâll be the one who takes the armful and leaves, and you guys get the cup! Sounds perfect, right?â âYouâre gonna get an aft full of my foot if you donât knock it off,â Yellowjacket snapped, though the heat wasnât in it. He was too in awe of all the riches they were surrounded by. Blockbuster stood carefully by the door, serving as a makeshift sentry.
âWait, sheâs under the treasure?â Yellowjacketâs attention was caught by that, and he frowned, peering at where Midpoint indicated. âDamn.â
Firebomb did, indeed, remember, though she said nothing, keeping a blank mask of stoicism on her faceplates. In truth, she had always found Doubletap most beautiful in this mode, and sheâs struggling to keep those old emotions at bay.Â

Now that was what Yellowjacket liked to hear. He grinned at Brinkburst, door wings hitching up a bit in pride. âNot fragginâ much, thatâs for sure.â From his position amongst the plants, Blockbuster smiled over at his conjunx.
Fritz groaned, dragging two servos down his face while the other two clenched at his sides. âSo both paths get us there, but we donât know which one to take,â he surmised. âAnd we donât know which one she took. Weâre not gonna have to split up, are we?â
âSplittinâ up is dangerous. Then again, just beinâ here is dangerous,â offered Brinkburst.
Midpoint was apprehensive. âI want to have the best chance of finding Dragade⌠if thatâs possible at all⌠but you all have been kind enough just to take me on. I donât want to put you in danger.â
âIs there a way that has more traps?â inquired Doubletap. âMaybe we should take the safe way - if Dragade knew there were such a path she would have gone down it rather than the more deadly one.â
âIâm not so sure.â Midpoint looked wistful. âShe always was one for a challenge.â
âWait up.â Brinkburst ran a scan. âSomeone was usinâ thievesâ tools on thâ left path. Left âem scattered.â
âI donât want anyone goinâ down a path I ainât scouting,â was Yellowjacketâs addition to the topic as he moved back over to the rest of them. âSo no splittinâ up.â
They listened as Brinkburst gave his assessment, and Fritz nodded enthusiastically. âSo that should be the way she went, right? Theyâre probably her tools!â He didnât really want to go ANYWHERE and Brinkburstâs reminder that the whole place was dangerous didnât help; he was still glad that they at least had a possible solution to this dilemma.
Doubletap turned to Midpoint to reassure her and temper her expectations at the same time. âThere are no guarantees of finding your endura, but at the same time⌠my colleague seems to think thatâs our best chance. Shall we?â
Midpoint nodded. âIâll help your scout in taking point. Iâll recognize Dragade from a long way away if we can find herâŚâ
With Yellowjacketâs expert trapfinding, they were soon well on their way on the narrower left-side path, and soon the tools Brinkburst had picked up in his scan began to materialize: A magna-wrench here and a set of lock-break pliers there.
Yellowjacket had his arms crossed, and he nodded at this conclusion. Good. Then he commed Blockbuster. âStick by the big guy. Please.â Blockbuster glanced over at his conjunx, expression a mixture of emotions, before slowly nodding. Heâd let YJ coddle him for now; after what happened, he understood the need.
Fritz went along with the others, grumbling to himself. So much for resting. Firebomb stayed by Doubletap, and if anyone dared to say anything her hard crimson gaze made it clear sheâd club them to death with her bound servos.
Yellowjacket picked up each tool they found as they went, as long as there wasnât an active trap grabbing them would trigger. He passed each to Midpoint wordlessly. He understood her plight. If anything like this happened to Blockbuster, heâd tear the planet apart to find the constructibot.
Brinkburst noticed Fritz tiring. As the passage was still big enough for a vehicle mode - his tank mode, at least, he transformed and commed the courier. âWhaddya say ta mountinâ a noble steed?â Then the rest heard the vehicle-mode behemoth - whoâd be terrifying on first impression in robot mode, to say nothing of his massively armed tank form - guffaw. He braked to let Fritz get on top of his turret.
Midpoint examined the tools. âThese are like the kind I knew her to use. If she is - was - here, she did a lot of hard work in this passageway. And yet there are still traps indicated on the map.â Midpoint demonstrated this by preempting Yellowjacket and whacking the mechanism of a spike trap in the walls, stopping it short before they could spring out and impale someone. âPardon my lack of finesse. This is how I solve problems: quick, easy blunt force.â
Soon enough they came to a door: Much like the one out front of the temple, only considerably bigger and engraved with more of the stories that Brinkburst read out earlier.
Fritz flushed a deep pink at the comm, and he spluttered at first, then swallowed hard and commed back, 'Y-Yeah, thanks'. Fritz scrambled up on top of Brinkburst, completely embarrassed even as he was flushed with warmth. Oh my.
"Sometimes ya don't always gotta take out a trap if you can avoid it," Yellowjacket said, slightly miffed that Midpoint had beaten him to one. He snapped his energum.
When they reached the door, Yellowjacket was all over it, scanning for traps or hidden mechanisms.
Now that was what Yellowjacket liked to hear. He grinned at Brinkburst, door wings hitching up a bit in pride. âNot fragginâ much, thatâs for sure.â From his position amongst the plants, Blockbuster smiled over at his conjunx.

"I don't want anyone goin' down a path I ain't scouting," was Yellowjacket's addition to the topic as he moved back over to the rest of them. "So no splittin' up."
They listened as Brinkburst gave his assessment, and Fritz nodded enthusiastically. "So that should be the way she went, right? They're probably her tools!" He didn't really want to go ANYWHERE and Brinkburst's reminder that the whole place was dangerous didn't help; he was still glad that they at least had a possible solution to this dilemma.
Now that was what Yellowjacket liked to hear. He grinned at Brinkburst, door wings hitching up a bit in pride. âNot fraggin' much, that's for sure.â From his position amongst the plants, Blockbuster smiled over at his conjunx.
Fritz groaned, dragging two servos down his face while the other two clenched at his sides. âSo both paths get us there, but we don't know which one to take,â he surmised. âAnd we don't know which one she took. We're not gonna have to split up, are we?â

Yellowjacket listened with some interest. Heâd never been big on stories and reading, more of an action-oriented mech. He popped his energum again, keeping his optics forward while Brinkburst talked.
Fritz, meanwhile, gravitated toward Brinkburst during this story. âIâve read about that,â he said at the end. Heâd always thought these legends were fun and interesting, which was why heâd found out about the cord. His attention turned back toward Midpoint. âWhereâs that? I ran a lot of mail to different places, I might have heard of it.â
She had a look between happy and sad, even more intensely, now. âIt got hit bad during the war and totally destroyed⌠itâs rebuilt now, but we all lost a lot. Were you at Salika Somoth?â
Doubletap dropped to her knees and would have cried out in anguish if her vocal processor hadnât been strangled by her sheer despair. She stared desperately at Firebomb as she tried to regain composure. Now had to be the time for her to realize the enormity of what they had done, all too short a while ago. She glanced at Blockbuster, too, knowing he was connected to the terrible deeds done at that place too. Mentally, she recited the rolls of her known kills, which she stole from the Autobot databases in sheer remorse and self-mortification:

Fritz brightened. âOh yeah, Salika Somoth! I was there a few times, delivered some packages, you know, before thatâŚwentâŚ.downâŚ..â His processor stuttered as he remembered the last time heâd heard the name of that town, and his yellow optics darted fearfully between Doubletap and Blockbuster. Oh. Oh no. That town.
Doubletap wasnât the only one who fell to her knees. Yellowjacket gave a shout of alarm as Blockbuster collapsed, servos barely catching him against the floor, optics wide and frame trembling. No. No, not there. NoâŚ..energon was pooling at the edges of his optics as memories came flooding back, many of which heâd tried to repress, or had been thought eaten by the Gideonâs Glue. He was still shuddering when Yellowjacket ran over to him, arms wrapping around his helm, mouth pressed to the constructibotâs audio as the mini tried to whisper soothingly to him. Itâs okay, itâs in the past, donât think about it, Iâm here -
FirebombâŚ.she would later chalk this up to some crazy impulse, probably something these freaks had rubbed off on her. Maybe it was the look Doubletap had shot her way. Firebomb had never felt guilty over what they did at Salika Somoth â those were their orders, that was what they were supposed to do  - and yet. The way Doubletap looked at herâŚdespite the servos theyâd bound once again before entering this temple, and now with Blockbuster out of commission, Firebomb was free to move, and move she did. Her bound arms came around Doubletap, a moment of intense weakness overtaking her as she held the helicopter against her chassis. âShh,â she murmured, the closest to compassion she ever got. âDonât.â
Midpoint stopped and stammered, a wave of remorse coming over her as she surveyed the others. âWas it something IâŚ?â
âNo, Midpoint,â replied Doubletap, voice quavering. âNot something you said. Something we did.â
She stroked Firebombâs back and nestled her helm against the larger âconâs, then drew herself back up to full height and dusted herself off. She checked on Blockbuster to, proffering a servo across his shoulders, kneading at his load-bearing joints. âWeâd better move on. Midpoint, Iâm sorry, we all are, but from now on we promise to do justice to Dragade whatever it takes.â
Midpoint flashed a hopeful little smile back. âThank you. I never expected to run into the likes of you all⌠I suppose my life would be a lot worse right now if you werenât in the world.â
Holy scrap, this went downhill real fast. Fritz moved to Midpoint, taking a servo of hers in two of his. He was half trying to ignore the intense reactions of the others in their party, even while reassuring their newest member. âHey, no, you didnât do anything,â he consoled. Midpointâs response to Doubletap did have him wincing a little, mouth twisting beneath his faceplate. This party already had a history of slag going wrong, and he felt bad letting Midpoint believe otherwise. Still, he added, âWeâre happy to help.â
OhâŚ.Firebomb let out a quiet exvent, so ready to shift back into what she and Doubletap had once had, the nestling making her soften further. And then Doubletap was gone, off to comfort that constructibot, and Firebombâs senses returned to her. Her plating tightened, quivering with rage, though it was toward herself. What the frag had she just done. Sheâd abandoned the thought of anything with Doubletap centuries ago, had planned to kill her in that bar, and here she was â the heli was distressed and Firebomb immediately went back to old, old instincts. Frag. Frag it all. She stood where she was, quietly shaking, servos fisted in their bonds.
Blockbuster leaned into Yellowjacketâs touch, optics dimming to nothing, though they came back online at Doubletapâs comforting servo. An understanding look surely crossed between them, and he finally stood, wiping at the energon that had trickled down his cheeks. He said nothing. Yellowjacket remained at his side, giving Doubletap a âI donât trust you but I guess thanksâ look (very complex, hopefully the neut understood it) as he clung to Busterâs arm, even pressing a kiss to the larger mechâs servo. They may have been in the middle of a journey but Buster still leaned down, alll the way down, and bonked his forehelm gently against his conjunxâs.
âYeah, uh. Moving on. That sounds good.â So much affection happening here. Fritz fidgeted. âOnward?â
âOnward is what I like ta hear!â Brinkburst grinned at the rest and crooked one servo as he took the front of the pack, Midpoint in tow under one arm and Fritz gently cradled under the other. âYellowjacket, weâll let ya know when thereâs a trap, I sâppose.â
Doubletap, against her better judgment, clung to Firebomb still. They needed each other now even if Firebomb couldnât admit it. Otherwise how would the bigger flyer get out of this with her morality intact?
The lot of them came out of the cramped tunnels down another long staircase and into a massive, open complex carved out of the rock, with powerful star-like light sources illuminating the whole thing from far above.
Fritz found himself encompassed beneath a massive arm, and â yup the pink tinge of energon on his cheeks was back, thankfully hidden by his faceplate. He hesitantly allowed himself to wrap two arms around Brinkburstâs waist, servos resting on the opposite hip. He fiercely kept his optics on the path ahead, not acknowledging his own actions.
Firebomb continued to be angry at herself for how weak sheâd been, how vulnerable. Yet â when Doubletap came back, when Doubletap stuck to her, she allowed it. She said nothing, tight-lipped and scowling. Yet. She let it happen. These mechs really were rubbing off on her, and not in a good way.
âYeah, thanks.â Yellowjacket was too busy holding on to Blockbuster to snap in his usual way, his faceplates a mask of concern. Buster was still venting heavily, barely recovered from what had just been dug up. So even though it was Yellowjacketâs job to scout, he stayed in the back with the constructibot.
And â wow, this room was beautiful. Fritz stared up at the lights in awe, processor racing. What were they? How did they work? Whoâd put them there? âItâs beautiful,â he whispered, mostly to himself.
Brinkburst did his scan. âYa know⌠Iâm beat about all this. No known machine powers thaâ lighting. Look alive down there. Who knows whatâs around?â
Midpoint spoke up. âThereâs still a while to go before the chamber of the Cup. I see a lot of trap markings coming upâŚâ
Just then a shower of molten glass rained down a short distance ahead. Midpoint winced. âLike THAT trap.â
Doubletap sat down and looked around the room a bit better. It was like a huge artificial garden, with various organic plants from other worlds in bloom in a sea of pale but unusual hues. There was a clear path forward into a door in a cliff opposite them, as well as stone monuments littering the grounds. âMaybe we should rest up here before proceeding.â
Frag. Yellowjacket should have been in the front, doing his job; his scans would have picked up that trap. Fortunately for him nobody was actually beneath the molten rain. He hesitated, torn between staying with Blockbuster (who could be triggered by this) and doing what he was supposed to be doing. He glanced up at his conjunx, chewing his energum nervously. Blockbuster offlined his optics for a klik, took a deep vent, and nodded down at the mini. He stroked a thumb digit over Yellowjacketâs cheek. The gesture was clear â go, do what you need to. Iâll be fine.
So Yellowjacket went, pushing past the rest, obviously avoiding the trap theyâd already triggered as he scanned the rest of the room. If anything else was in here, heâd find it. He mightâve kicked a few of the plants while he worked. Frag you, organics.
Firebomb clung to one of the walls by the entrance, eyeing the room with distrust. It was totally a coincidence that they were hovering near Doubletap.
Fritz was looking around the room, still in awe, admiring the beauty of the plants and the lights. Heâd moved off by himself, though once the glass began falling he jumped and ran back near where theyâd come in. âYeah, what she said! Letâs rest!â His voice was near squeak levels.
âYellowjacket, whaddya see?â said Brinkburst, with his usual inquisitiveness. âThere ARE traps⌠but none of âem are ordinary machines. Ya able to make anythinâ of that?â
Doubletap, meanwhile, merely sat among the plants, venting the cool air and meditating for a moment. Her thoughts turned to Midpoint, and helping her out - that would be appropriate repayment for at least some of what sheâd done, but there was still a lot left to atone for. Nevertheless, it was good to start on a path of cleansing her guilt rather than just hiding from it.
Midpoint herself frowned while she studied the map. âThe path branches fairly quickly, and I donât know the way Dragade went. She just didnât mark that, for some reason. Maybe she was trying to tell me something by that⌠she was never careless, thatâs for sure.â
Yellowjacket was troubled by what his scans revealed. There was the molten glass rain, which they'd already triggered, and then. âOver there,â he said, pointing toward where the path led to the exit. âThere's a spike pit. If ya step wrong you fall.â Then he pointed to another area of the room, also near the exit. âThere, there's a trigger that activates a flamethrower on whoever hit it.â He was a scout for a reason, once again. His scans pick this stuff up. Though he ended with the worst.... âAnd there.â Yellowjacket pointed once more, right at the exit they needed to use to leave. âIt's rigged with mines, tightly laid. Ya have ta walk in a specific way to avoid them. I can lead us, but it won't be easy.â Yellowjacket popped his energum, glancing back toward Blockbuster.
Firebomb remained where she was, near Doubletap, glowering at the rest of the group. Blockbuster had moved forward, at least, and leaned down to admire one of the plants growing in the room.
Fritz was scared further by Yellowjacket's assessment, and he wrestled with his fear versus the promise he'd made to Midpoint to find her conjunx. He moved closer to their new companion. âThe map leads to the Cup, right? So she likely took the path in that direction, I'd assume?â
Yellowjacket listened with some interest. Heâd never been big on stories and reading, more of an action-oriented mech. He popped his energum again, keeping his optics forward while Brinkburst talked.

He was half trying to ignore the intense reactions of the others in their party, even while reassuring their newest member. âHey, no, you didn't do anything,â he consoled. Midpoint's response to Doubletap did have him wincing a little, mouth twisting beneath his faceplate. This party already had a history of slag going wrong, and he felt bad letting Midpoint believe otherwise. Still, he added, âWe're happy to help.â
Oh....Firebomb let out a quiet exvent, so ready to shift back into what she and Doubletap had once had, the nestling making her soften further. And then Doubletap was gone, off to comfort that constructibot, and Firebomb's senses returned to her. Her plating tightened, quivering with rage, though it was toward herself. What the frag had she just done. She'd abandoned the thought of anything with Doubletap centuries ago, had planned to kill her in that bar, and here she was â the heli was distressed and Firebomb immediately went back to old, old instincts. Frag. Frag it all. She stood where she was, quietly shaking, servos fisted in their bonds.
Blockbuster leaned into Yellowjacket's touch, optics dimming to nothing, though they came back online at Doubletap's comforting servo. An understanding look surely crossed between them, and he finally stood, wiping at the energon that had trickled down his cheeks. He said nothing. Yellowjacket remained at his side, giving Doubletap a 'I don't trust you but I guess thanks' look (very complex, hopefully the neut understood it) as he clung to Buster's arm, even pressing a kiss to the larger mech's servo. They may have been in the middle of a journey but Buster still leaned down, alll the way down, and bonked his forehelm gently against his conjunx's.
âYeah, uh. Moving on. That sounds good.â So much affection happening here. Fritz fidgeted. âOnward?â
Ablator
Accelerando
Acrolith
Ad-Lib
AshsweeperâŚ
Fritz brightened. âOh yeah, Salika Somoth! I was there a few times, delivered some packages, you know, before that...went....down.....â His processor stuttered as he remembered the last time he'd heard the name of that town, and his yellow optics darted fearfully between Doubletap and Blockbuster. Oh. Oh no. That town.
Doubletap wasn't the only one who fell to her knees. Yellowjacket gave a shout of alarm as Blockbuster collapsed, servos barely catching him against the floor, optics wide and frame trembling. No. No, not there. No.....energon was pooling at the edges of his optics as memories came flooding back, many of which he'd tried to repress, or had been thought eaten by the Gideon's Glue. He was still shuddering when Yellowjacket ran over to him, arms wrapping around his helm, mouth pressed to the constructibot's audio as the mini tried to whisper soothingly to him. It's okay, it's in the past, don't think about it, I'm here -
Firebomb....she would later chalk this up to some crazy impulse, probably something these freaks had rubbed off on her. Maybe it was the look Doubletap had shot her way. Firebomb had never felt guilty over what they did at Salika Somoth â those were their orders, that was what they were supposed to do  - and yet. The way Doubletap looked at her...despite the servos they'd bound once again before entering this temple, and now with Blockbuster out of commission, Firebomb was free to move, and move she did. Her bound arms came around Doubletap, a moment of intense weakness overtaking her as she held the helicopter against her chassis. âShh,â she murmured, the closest to compassion she ever got. âDon't.â

Yellowjacket listened with some interest. He'd never been big on stories and reading, more of an action-oriented mech. He popped his energum again, keeping his optics forward while Brinkburst talked. Fritz, meanwhile, gravitated toward Brinkburst during this story. "I've read about that," he said at the end. He'd always thought these legends were fun and interesting, which was why he'd found out about the cord. His attention turned back toward Midpoint. "Where's that? I ran a lot of mail to different places, I might have heard of it."
The shaking and whirring stopped and there were some crunches and a low thud and then something heavy - a mech - dropped to the floor unceremoniously from the hole that had just been made in the ceiling. Apparently, there were more ways in than one, thought Doubletap. Except some were more graceful than others.
Intending to intimidate rather than shoot, she pointed her rifle at the figured. Brinkburst, meanwhile, just boomed, âWHO GOES THERE?â
Of course they were under attack while she was incapable of doing anything about it. Firebomb glowered over at Blockbuster. âIf they attack, Iâm defending myself. Youâd best stay out of my way.â Blockbuster leveled his optics on her, and though he said nothing, he did look a bit uncomfortable. It would be a bad idea to let her go, butâŚ
Fritz peeked out from behind Brinkburst, while Yellowjacket immediately whipped his guns out of his holsters and pointed both at the intruder. He gritted his dentals, trigger fingers itchy.Â
A wavering voice replied, âDonât shoot. Please. Iâm⌠here for a reason. Iâm sure you are too.â
Doubletapâs face softened even as her rifle stayed raised. âAnd what reason might that be? Iâm certain youâre looking for treasure. That is, after all, why one would go mucking around hidden ruins, no?â
The figure in shadow said âNo. Not treasure. I know whatâs at the end of this temple and I assure you, you can keep it. I want no part of it. What I want is answers. My name is Midpoint and I want to know what happened to Dragade. My conjunx endura.â
Yellowjacket was not so easily convinced. His pistols were still trained on this âMidpointâ, nasal ridge wrinkled in a snarl. He didnât say anything, though. He didnât need to. His guns would speak for him.
Firebomb grimaced, while Blockbuster relaxed. So it seemed they werenât about to be in a firefight after all. It was Fritz, though, who spoke again, stepping out from behind Brinkburst.Â
âWhat happened to them?â Fritz clearly had a soft spark, as he was moving forward despite his lack of weapons and courage. âIâve never heard that name. How can we help?â Okay so after the âI want no part of itâ Fritz was pretty happy to not continue looking for this treasure but. Midpoint sounded sincere.Â
Now Doubletap lowered her gun at last. âWhat brings you here to find your endura, then?â
âShe was lost searching for the very thing you all must be.â
âAnâ what makes ya so certain about what THAT is?â This, of course, came from Brinkburst, who was definitely not hostile, per se, just aggressively curious. This mech might have answers they needed. The colossus put one servo on Fritzâs shoulder and smiled approvingly at him for his boldness. The best adventurers knew when to talk out of a situation.
âBecause she made a map.â Midpoint stepped out of the shadows, revealing herself to be a mid-sized green femme of indeterminate but apparently land-vehicle alternate mode.
Yellowjacket didnât lower his guns. These idiots may have believed Midpoint, but when the strange mech turned on them, Yellowjacket would be ready. His optics shot toward Blockbuster, giving a âon my signalâ look. Blockbusterâs plating tightened, though he nodded slightly. Firebomb thankfully didnât notice, as she was too busy glaring at the newcomer.
Fritz couldnât help but lean into Brinkburstâs touch. It was nice to have back up. Beneath his faceplate he was blushing again, though this wasnât clear in his voice when he said, âA map? Through this temple?â He actually moved away from Brinkburstâs servo, closer to Midpoint. He was clearly too trusting. In the background, Yellowjacket gritted his dentals and kept his guns primed.
âAnd youâre sure sheâs still here?â Fritz was doubting, though only because Midpoint had actually got a map from her conjunx. If Dragade had gone missing here, howâd she get a map to Midpoint?
âIt was her last transmission to me. I was reluctant for her to leave me in order to find the Horn - that is what you all want, isnât it? - but she couldnât be dissuaded. It was a long time until I heard from her, but then she sent a map of the inside of this temple - and then nothing else.â
Brinkburst licked his dentals a little. âYa trying to make a deal?â
âWell, if youâll take another member, Iâd be glad to navigate for you.â
âSeriously? Youâre gonna trust this mech?â Firebomb was incredulous. Autobots and NAILs were even stupider than she thought. âGood way to get us all killed.â
âI think itâs a good idea,â Fritz said. His faceplate moved and optics brightened in a way that made it clear he was smiling. âWe could use a navigator, right?â Here he glanced back at Brinkburst.
Yellowjacket snarled, internally heated that he actually agreed with the Decepticon. âI donât like it.â His optics narrowed at Midpoint. âIâm gonna be keeping my eye on you, mech. One step outta line and youâre history.â
Midpoint looked down, then surrendered a pistol and a small energy pick. âIâm unarmed apart from these. I beg you to trust me. You seem to be my last hope to find my beloved. Please.â
Doubletap took the offered weapons and stroked Midpointâs face in concern, while Brinkburst scanned her. âSheâs tellinâ the truth.â
âWe should move quickly,â said Doubletap. âNo telling who else might be here by now.â
Yellowjacket was still scowling, though he finally lowered his guns. He glanced over at Blockbuster, who gave him a silent nod. Yes, he, too, would be watching Midpoint. Firebomb watched this exchange with a tight lipped frown.
While Doubletap stroked Midpointâs face, Fritz came forward to take her servos in all four of his and give them a gentle squeeze. âWeâll help you find her, donât worry.â His tone had a hint of a promise.
âDoubletap is right,â Blockbuster rumbled, and Firebomb would have jumped in surprise if she were anyone else. Sheâd almost forgotten he COULD talk. âLead the way, Midpoint.â
Midpoint hesitantly assumed her alt-mode, which was a six-wheeled, squat all-terrain vehicle, but before doing so she handed a datatrak with the map supposedly made by Dragade to Doubletap. If nothing else, it looked convincing - it was full of details that either had to come from someone who really was here, or were made up extremely meticulously. There were even guides to traps along the way. Doubletap considered showing Yellowjacket, but figured heâd take it for more NAIL patronization.
The group headed on cautiously and uneventfully, apart from some suspicious noises in the distance that were probably nothing, and could see carvings in very old script in the walls, as well as odd pictograms seemingly depicting the Cup and its use by ancient Transformers, as the light got better.
With the map in hand, the journey continued, Yellowjacket grumbling over his private comm with Blockbuster as he had to work with Doubletap to scout their progress. His scans and experience came in pretty handy, and coupled with the map, they were able to avoid any traps they encountered. Fritz tried to stay near Midpoint in the middle of their group, not wanting to be close to either Doubletap or Firebomb, who brought up the rear with Blockbuster, and Brinkburst...beneath his faceplate, Fritz chewed his lip. He didn't know how he felt about THAT guy right now. Brinkburst was really fragging annoying in Maccadam's, and Fritz had always tried to keep out of his attention, but....hrm.
As they got deeper into the temple, Yellowjacket glanced at the walls, then back at Brinkburst, even as he pulled some energum out of his subspace. "What's all this stuff mean, anyway?" he asked, loudly popping the treat.
