“- Look Mammy, I’m not a clone. I should be allowed to express my individuality. I’m sorry, I’m not wearing my blazer. End of story. Gerry, pass me the wooden spoon.”

He knows he’s not good with words, and he’s relying on the secret language of flowers to communicate to Kate how he feels on the inside. His love for her is all consuming, how could he possibly put that into words? But you can already tell when he arrives on her doorstep that he is second-guessing himself. Suddenly, these flowers seem woefully inadequate. Even if they did offer a clue to what he was feeling, they wouldn’t be enough. And maybe the bunch would have been more impressive if he had gone to a florist, and not insisted on picking the stems himself from the Bridgerton gardens. But somehow, that little extra detail had seemed important to him. His father had picked flowers for his mother. He wanted to pick flowers for Kate.

And then Kate doesn’t really react to them. There’s no “dawning realisation” when she sees what he is carrying, and she very clearly is not picking up what he is putting down. The secret language of flowers has failed him, and the tulips become a hindrance. He puts then to one side because they have not had the reaction he was hoping for, and more than that - he realises he’s going to need both his hands if he is to get the ring out of his pocket.
