Thinking about Bowie and how as a tiny girl his Peace on Earth/Little Drummer Boy completely blew my mind. And then how I watched The Breakfast Club a million times in 8th grade and was really moved by the quote from Changes that is shown. Those are just two little things that meant a lot to me. I feel really similarly about David Bowie as I do about Captain Lou Albano as far as the influence they had on me as an individual. The day Captain Lou died I wrote this song and made this video. The line āyou gave a lot of kids permission to let out their inner weirdā also applies to Mr. Stardust. Absolutely. Those of us Bowie influenced, who are feeling a punch in the gut today, need to remember that we can maybe be a bit of that to others. Let your crazy light sparkle so the kids know that the crazy light they feel inside themselves is okay. Itās more than okay. Itās everything. Itās perfect. You are love.
Patti Smith and Dutch art therapist Bettie Ringma in CBGBās, late 1976 (photo by Marc Miller).
āPatti Smith was hanging around at the bar, but no one was taking pictures of her because she was super-shy.
She posed with me and then just went away: some musicians are like that, theyāre not into socialising. Theyāre just artists.ā

Patti, 1976
Where there you have it, folks. And my friend and I were right with our suspicions, sadly. But now, Iāll actually discuss it because Maureen finally revealed a huge piece of why she was kicked out of Babes In Toyland.
Kat and Lori just didnāt like Maureenās open-letter to Joan Jett about not speaking up about Jackie Foxās sexual assault. Honestly, Maureen has my support, and in my opinion, asking a bandmate to not address the silence of rape victims is just disgusting.
āDonāt get involvedā - that is the same nasty mindset that has been used for decades and centuries to shut out victims of sexual assault and ignore the atrocity caused by the rapist. Donāt be like that, folks. DO get involved. DO speak up. Never be afraid to speak against sexual assault.
- And if youāre excluded/banished from certain things because youāre not afraid to address sexual assault openly and make others uncomfortable with breaking the silence that sexual assault victims have been forced into, then you really donāt need to be apart of those things, as they just contribute to the silence. Rapists and rape apologists need to be called out, not ignored and coddled.
But do you see WHY most sexual abuse victims are afraid of speaking up against their rapists/abuse? Because weāre constantly throwing this backlash to those who come forward to talk about their experiences and those who defend rape victims. Maureen was struggling to pay bills and feed her child, BECAUSE SHE SPOKE UP AGAINST RAPE. THIS IS WHY RAPE VICTIMS ARE AFRAID OF SPEAKING UP.
Each day, I gain more and more respect for Maureen Herman. Iām very proud of Jackie Fox for coming forward and giving other victims the courage to speak, just as I am of Maureen.
