Why do you think they changed Alex and piper flashback in season 7 (bar scene)?
To make the nonsensical bullshit Alex was doing in the present makes sense.
This is literally what happened in the writers room:
Writer 1: okay so in this next scene Alex is going lure McCullough into the shower because after seeing those photos of Piper and Zelda on Instagram she is suddenly triggered gets super insecure and feels the need to protect herself by fooling around with the damaged and vulnerable guard because that’s how she is.
Writer 2: oooh I like that good idea
Writer 3: Wait a minute Alex fooling around with someone else while she’s married to Piper? That’s how she is? That doesn’t sound right.
Writer 1: What do you mean?
Writer 3: Well after 6 seasons we’ve never actually established Alex to be that kind of person. She was always all about Piper and she never was the kind of person to seek out damaged, vulnerable, women even after all the times Piper hurt her.
Writer 1: I still don’t get what your saying
Writer 2: Yeah what are you saying?
Writer 3: I’m saying you can’t make her do something that’s not within her character to do, we have no evidence to support her actions.
Writer 1: Sure we do we have her flashbacks
Writer 3: There’s nothing in her flashbacks that support this.
Writer 1: There is if we rewrite them
Writer 3: Say what?! You can’t do that
Writer 1 : Sure we can. We’ll just say Alex’s ex-girlfriend Sylvie was a damaged woman that Alex chose because she was an alcoholic who relied on her and when she started to recover Alex no longer felt needed so she moved on to her next target Piper Chapman at the bar. And we’ll give a throwaway line to Sylvie to let everyone know the deep rooted cause for Alex pushing people away by having her say “ I’m not your fucking father, I’m not going to walk out on you.”
Writer 3: None of that makes any sense! I wrote that scene with them at the bar! Alex approached piper because she was genuinely interested in Piper. Piper was not a target, or a project, or some damaged woman. And Alex doesn’t have abandonment issues because of her dad it’s always been Piper.
Writer 1: It can make sense if we rewrite it though.
Writer 3: You suck *gets up and leaves*
Writer 2: what’s his problem?
Writer 1: I don’t know....anyway let’s talk about the scene we wrote with Nicky’s one night stand with Luscheck who actually turned out to be her ex-boyfriend from 5 years ago.
