It was a warm, sunny afternoon. The sun was setting over Camp Half-Blood, and music floated out of the cabin as usual—and shouting.

“Oh my god, Michael! just get- out!” Following the shouts, a boy was then shoved out the wooden doors, laughing and raising his hands up in defense. A girl was right behind him—groaning in annoyance.

Reese.

“Don’t come back until I’m done!” She huffed, storming back inside. Weaving between cabin mates and bunk beds, she made her way to a tucked away spot near the back of the cabin. There was a messy bed, a full length mirror, and a makeshift vanity.

“Jesus-“ The girl sighed, standing in front of the mirror and starting to mess with her hair.

She’s getting ready for…something.

Max blinked, watching as Reese kicked michel out of the cabin — Hell, cabin seven was always lively and Max doubted getting one boy out of the cabin would make a huge difference.

She gave Micheal an awkward wave before slipping past him and following Reese into the cabin.

“Hey Reese.” She hummed, peeking out from behind her friend “Whatcha up to?”

Reese paused, fingers tangled in her hair as she tried to brush through any knots. She spotted Max in the mirror, smiling and turning towards her. “Oh- Hey Max!”

Turning around—it was more visible what she was wearing. A nice yellow sundress, gold jewelry, and some brown Mary Jane shoes.

“Nothing much, just uhh…” Reese reached down and grabbed a piece of gum off the bed. The girl chewed for a second. “Getting ready for a date.” She said more shyly.

Reese looked beautiful as usual. You could’ve told Max that Reese was a goddess in disguise and she’d believe you in a heartbeat.

“Oh.” She blinked, ignoring the odd twisting sensation in her gut. That was good! Right?

“Uh— fun. With who? Can i ask that? is that rude?” She chuckled awkwardly, chewing on her bottom lip

Something about Max seemed…off. Her expression faltered, and she looked…Reese didn’t have a word for it. It made her frown.

“Oh- just..no one. Hermes kid. You know? Seemed fun.” She shrugged. “And no! Not rude at all, don’t worry.” Reese chuckled.

“You good?” She hummed, concerned.

“Hermes kids suck.” She blurted out, immediately regretting her choice of words. “I would…know. Cause—sharing a cabin with them. Sorry— I’m sure he’s nice.”

“Yeah, i’m fine. Don’t worry about it.” Max sighed, she was fine. right? Right! Her friend was going on a date, that’s good!

“Oh- I, uh…” she blinked, taken aback. “I mean, no- yeah, you’re right. Some of ‘em do. But I mean…” Reese sighed.

“Yeah, it’s fine. I get it. Bet they can be assholes sometimes.” She shrugged once more, sitting down on the bed and moving some stuff out of the way so Max could sit beside her.

“You sure? You seem a little…I don’t know.” Reese rubbed her eyes. “Nevermind. Anyway, I was just tryna get ready. You need something? Or just dropping in?”

Max sat down next to Reese with a sigh, fidgeting with the zipper of her coat — it was far too hot to be wearing, but Max was almost never seen without it.

“I’m fine— sorry just. Uh—“ Max wasn’t sure. “Just having an off day. I guess.”

Open starter rp: Nostalgia will be the death of me.

Maxine Hale did not consider herself a nostalgic girl. The daughter of Circe had no time to focus on their past when their future was so bright.

This bright future didn't stop Max from reminiscing. Occasionally, when the sun glimmered on the ocean just right, and the smell of the sea wafted through the air, Max could picture herself back home on Aeaea.

The ocean lapping up against the sandy shores of the island, Laughter of nymphs and other girls at the spa, the occasional squeal of pigs.

Max had been a good daughter. Not a perfect one, but good nonetheless.

She had honed her powers, practiced making spells and stirring potions, practiced sword fighting, gardening, and so many more things Circe claimed her daughter should know.

She had a good life, she had a good mother, yet part of Max resented her time on the island.

When she left, she had hurt the people she had loved. When she made new friends in the mortal world she had hurt them to. Maybe she was destined to hurt all of her loved ones?

The sand felt warm beneath her feet as Max sat down on the shore of the beach, watching the waves lap at the shore. Camp was nice, not her home, but close enough.

You notice Max at the shoreline, seemingly lost in thought. Do you approach them?

— Break the air to feel the fall, or just to feel anything at all.

It was a sunny, warm day at Camp Half-Blood. Kids ran around happily, shouting and laughing. And wind gently stirred the leaves and banners that hung around.

Reese laid on the cozily warm sand on the beach, a Bluetooth speaker sitting on a beach blanket next to her. There was a bag of snacks and….a pile of photos?

She was looking through a bunch of old photographs, humming along to the song playing gently on the speaker. Waves crashed gently on the shoreline, and a sense of nostalgia washed over her.

She seemed to finally notice someone staring, and blinked.

“Oh- hi!”

A party raged inside of cabin twelve. The music could be heard from outside even, a thrum—a mix of voices, movement, and music. Ecstatic, exciting, but way too much for a certain daughter of Apollo’s ears.

For whatever reason, maybe you staggered out drunk, or were never at the party, or were just leaving—you stood outside of cabin twelve, before noticing something. A gentle light came from somewhere near the back of the cabin.

Gentle crying could be heard below the music. Sniffles that were barely there, hiccups that either came from sobs, or alcohol. Maybe you walked around, or maybe just glanced behind the cabin—but you spotted the source of the sound.

A girl was sitting with her back pressed against the wood wall. Brown hair shone gold in the moonlight. Hazel eyes stared ahead at the forest. A gentle, warm light radiated around her.

Reese.

“Stupid son of a bitch.” Her head was in her hands now. “It’s your fucking fault, no one else’s. Quit wallowing in your own self-pity.” Despite seemingly fighting in, she choked out a sob.

Music faintly hummed from inside. A plastic red cup sat beside her.

She turned the corner and spotted Reese. Her best friend. Also her only friend.

“Reese…?” Max mummered softly, sitting down next to the girl

“Uh- You alright?” Stupid question. Obviously Reese wasn’t alright!

She had never like or been good with people but Reese made her want to try.

She jumped out of her skin, gaze snapping over to tye voice. There. Perfect example. She was too distracted to even realize someone was approaching. And she had super-hearing!

“Oh- uhm. H-hey max.” Reese sighed. Wiping at her eyes, she awkwardly gestured at max. “I’m okay- you can…you can go, if you want.” A hiccup. Reese didn’t drink. Right? She never did.

“Or stay. I guess.” The daughter of Apollo groaned, lazily trying to grab at her cup.

“ ‘m sorry, max.”

Max frowned and took the cup form max, sniffing whatever was in the cup and then taking a sip from it. “You don’t drink.” Max stated, looking Reese up and down.

“And you’re obviously not ok. You’re crying. What’s wrong?” Sorry? Why was Reese sorry?! She had nothing to be sorry for. She was perfect.

“Why are you sorry?”

“Yeah. I know. It’s…supposed to be punch. Hopefully it’s just punch.” Who knows at this point into the party. Reese frowned, mumbling and rubbing her face tiredly.

She sighed, just looking over and watching max for a moment. “It’s just..” a groan. “Max. I’m….im not.”

“I’m sorry. For….for not being a good person. Not being good enough. I’m ugly. In more ways than one.” Reese bit her lip.

“Max I’ve hurt people. I’ve failed my loved ones, time and time again. And I just….i don’t know.” A few tears slid down her face, and she stared down at her hands. Burned. Stained. A constant reminder of the blood she couldn’t wash off. No matter how much, or hard she scrubbed.

Max nods, handing the cup to Reese “Mhm. Just punch.”

She frowned at Reese’s words Ugly? A bad person? Reese was neither of those things.

“I’ve hurt people too.” She admits quietly “But… I think that’s just…part of being human.”

Max places a gentle hand on top of Reese’s, Squeezing it softly. “If it’s worth anything i think you’re great.”

Reese looked up, blinking at max. Maybe there was something in the punch. Yeah, that’s why her face must be feeling so warm.

Her mouth opened and closed for a moment, before eventually snapping shut. Slowly, she turned her hand and gripped Max’s.

“Thanks. I…really appreciate it.” She chuckled, but it wasn’t necessarily happy. More.…calm. Present in the moment.

“You don’t have to…but uhm- do you, wanna come back to my cabin?” Reese blurted out. “Sorry, that sounded weird- I’m tired, just…it’s cold out here. And..I don’t really wanna go back in there.” She nodded at the wall behind her, then turned back to Max. If she stared a little too long, it was no one’s business.

“Yea-!” Max replied a little too quickly. “Yea, no you’re good i get what you mean. Lots of people in there.”

Maybe it was just that’s glow that came from Reese but Max felt warm, happy, peaceful.

Max squeezed Reese’s hand and helped her up. Ok, maybe Reese didn’t need any help standing up but Max didn’t want to let go of her hand.

“Yeah. Uhm- here.” She hummed softly, tugging her hand gently and starting to pull her along as she blearily looked around and started going towards her cabin.

“Are you cold?” Reese asked abruptly, looking over at Max as she walked. She’d intertwined their fingers, without thinking about it. It felt…natural.

“I’m extra warm naturally, and even I’m chilly.”

“I think i’m ok-“ Max hummed “Well- a little cold but i’m alright.”

Her hand felt like it fit perfectly in Reese’s. Like two pieces of a puzzle that fit together.

“You sure you’re alright?” Max asked suddenly, squeezing Reese’s hand.

She sighed, just looking over and watching max for a moment. “It’s just..” a groan. “Max. I’m….im not.”

“I’m sorry. For….for not being a good person. Not being good enough. I’m ugly. In more ways than one.” Reese bit her lip.

“Max I’ve hurt people. I’ve failed my loved ones, time and time again. And I just….i don’t know.” A few tears slid down her face, and she stared down at her hands. Burned. Stained. A constant reminder of the blood she couldn’t wash off. No matter how much, or hard she scrubbed.

Max nods, handing the cup to Reese “Mhm. Just punch.”

She frowned at Reese’s words Ugly? A bad person? Reese was neither of those things.

“I’ve hurt people too.” She admits quietly “But… I think that’s just…part of being human.”

Max places a gentle hand on top of Reese’s, Squeezing it softly. “If it’s worth anything i think you’re great.”

Reese looked up, blinking at max. Maybe there was something in the punch. Yeah, that’s why her face must be feeling so warm.

Her mouth opened and closed for a moment, before eventually snapping shut. Slowly, she turned her hand and gripped Max’s.

“Thanks. I…really appreciate it.” She chuckled, but it wasn’t necessarily happy. More.…calm. Present in the moment.

“You don’t have to…but uhm- do you, wanna come back to my cabin?” Reese blurted out. “Sorry, that sounded weird- I’m tired, just…it’s cold out here. And..I don’t really wanna go back in there.” She nodded at the wall behind her, then turned back to Max. If she stared a little too long, it was no one’s business.

“Yea-!” Max replied a little too quickly. “Yea, no you’re good i get what you mean. Lots of people in there.”

Maybe it was just that’s glow that came from Reese but Max felt warm, happy, peaceful.

Max squeezed Reese’s hand and helped her up. Ok, maybe Reese didn’t need any help standing up but Max didn’t want to let go of her hand.

Open Starter: My life’s the worst story told. (I’ll be this way ‘till I’m old.)

A party raged inside of cabin twelve. The music could be heard from outside even, a thrum—a mix of voices, movement, and music. Ecstatic, exciting, but way too much for a certain daughter of Apollo’s ears.

For whatever reason, maybe you staggered out drunk, or were never at the party, or were just leaving—you stood outside of cabin twelve, before noticing something. A gentle light came from somewhere near the back of the cabin.

Gentle crying could be heard below the music. Sniffles that were barely there, hiccups that either came from sobs, or alcohol. Maybe you walked around, or maybe just glanced behind the cabin—but you spotted the source of the sound.

A girl was sitting with her back pressed against the wood wall. Brown hair shone gold in the moonlight. Hazel eyes stared ahead at the forest. A gentle, warm light radiated around her.

Reese.

“Stupid son of a bitch.” Her head was in her hands now. “It’s your fucking fault, no one else’s. Quit wallowing in your own self-pity.” Despite seemingly fighting in, she choked out a sob.

Music faintly hummed from inside. A plastic red cup sat beside her.

Max didn’t like party’s. Cabin 12 was nice, but she wasn’t a fan of the loud noise.

That light felt familiar…

She turned the corner and spotted Reese. Her best friend. Also her only friend.

“Reese…?” Max mummered softly, sitting down next to the girl

“Uh- You alright?” Stupid question. Obviously Reese wasn’t alright!

She had never like or been good with people but Reese made her want to try.

She jumped out of her skin, gaze snapping over to tye voice. There. Perfect example. She was too distracted to even realize someone was approaching. And she had super-hearing!

“Oh- uhm. H-hey max.” Reese sighed. Wiping at her eyes, she awkwardly gestured at max. “I’m okay- you can…you can go, if you want.” A hiccup. Reese didn’t drink. Right? She never did.

“Or stay. I guess.” The daughter of Apollo groaned, lazily trying to grab at her cup.

“ ‘m sorry, max.”

Max frowned and took the cup form max, sniffing whatever was in the cup and then taking a sip from it. “You don’t drink.” Max stated, looking Reese up and down.

“And you’re obviously not ok. You’re crying. What’s wrong?” Sorry? Why was Reese sorry?! She had nothing to be sorry for. She was perfect.

“Why are you sorry?”
