Open Starter Rp: Finally home [Pt. 2]

Soldier boy, Oh my little soldier boy, I'll be true to you.

After nearly three weeks on the road, eight monster attacks, three fresh burn scars, one missing finger, and the help of two impossibly kind strangers, Marley Dunne was finally home.

They'd done it.

Every step down Half-Blood Hill sent a dull ache through their body. Their clothes were caked with dust, ash, and blood. Torn from brambles and monster claws. Their hair smelled faintly of smoke where the sun horse's scorching mane had singed it days ago.

Their right pinky finger pulsed beneath the layers of hastily wrapped bandages - well, the lack of finger throbbed.

The Stymphalian birds hadn't cared that Marley was just trying to get past their nests. One vicious sweep of a razor-sharp beak had taken their finger before they'd even realized what had happened.

It still hurt.

Everything still hurt.

But they were home.

Marley had been gone for three weeks.

Three. Weeks.

Their father had told her that she’d be home soon—but that was the most information he’d give her. Reese was relieved, obviously, but she was worried about the implications of Apollo’s vagueness. Were they badly injured?

Did he have some fault in that?

She already knew the answer to that. But she was abruptly snapped out of her thoughts as the cabin door clicked open.

The girl whipped her head up, eyes widening as she saw who had stepped in. In a second, she was on her feet and darting to the door and—

Hugging Marley full force.

“I missed you.” They murmured, voice cracking just slightly. “I missed everyone and—“

Marley looked almost exactly the same as when they had left. Sure, they were a bit bruised up — singed hair, some scratches on their arms and legs as well a couple burn marks.

And then of course…their hand. Wrapped in an old shirt. Stained with ash and… blood.

Marley's throat tightened so suddenly it hurt.

They hadn't cried while trying to calm Apollo's blazing horse as its mane scorched their arms.

They hadn't cried sleeping under ruined temples or limping through Delphi with aching feet.

The last time they had cried was when the Stymphalian birds had taken their finger.

But this did it. Tears welled up in their eyes and they gripped Reese a little tighter.

There was a moment of comfortable silence where they both just stood there and held each other. The birds chirped faintly outside, the wind whistled past the windows, laughter echoed from somewhere in the distance.

“I’m glad you’re back.” Reese rubbed their back for a second, before pulling away gently—not too far, but enough to check them over.

She swallowed the lump in her throat as she glanced Marley over. They were obviously a little dirty, bits of their hair was singed off, and…there were scratches and burn marks on their arms and legs. Some starting to scar already, some that looked like they weren’t healing properly.

Another thing that brought them together. Although hers looked different—Reese definitely wasn’t lacking in burn scars on her limbs either. She just wished that was something they weren’t twinning with.

“Marley.” Reese spoke abruptly, tone much more serious.

The burns across their forearms had finally stopped blistering, but the skin had tightened into angry pink patches that stretched painfully whenever they moved. Some places still oozed beneath fresh bandages. — gross, thought Marley — Others had already begun to scar.

What happened to your hand?

Right.

Marley glanced down at the crude makeshift bandages — An old shirt they decided they could sacrifice.

Sometimes they could swear they could still feel a finger that wasn't there.

“It—“ Their voice sounded far away. "It all happened really fast.”

The first bird hit before Marley even realized they were under attack.

“Uhm—“

Moments later a severed finger lay several feet away among the leaves. All that work and that stupid bird had decided to just leave their finger — Taunting them.

The pit in her stomach just kept getting deeper and deeper. Pure fear bit at her heart as she listened silently, reaching for her siblings uninjured hand.

Stymphalian birds.

“…We need to get you to the infirmary. I….” She paused and took a deep breath. “Do I even ask? Do you..Uhmm…”

Marley didn’t want to admit they'd carried their own severed finger around for the better part of that afternoon before finally accepting there was nothing to be done.

They shook their head, tears welling up in their eyes. “Uh— no. I…i tried ambrosia! and like— healing hymns. and my own powers but—“

The sniffled, bottom lip quivering.

“If you weren’t able to get it on within the first couple minutes it was detached, it was hopeless Mars.” She cringed slightly. Probably not the right thing to say but—the truth. She leaned closer.

“I’m so sorry.”

The girl sat with that for a beat, before she swallowed thickly and spoke again. “You can just- Just…sit here for a minute. You’re not actively bleeding out, so we can just..relax for a second.” She huffed. They knew Marley would just..need a second. They just got home.

Reese gently ran her fingers through their dirty blonde hair, silent as the guilt settled in.

It wasn’t her fault, but…

She always felt this way after a sibling came back from a quest injured. It felt like she was somehow responsible- she was supposed to protect them.

Ah, of course.

Mr. D called Marley ‘Crystal ball’ for a reason and Marley wished Apollo would admit that the power of prophecy wasn’t a gift — But a curse.

He never would. He was to proud to admit anything like that.

“The birds. I thought they were crows though, the horse, and blood.” They shrugged, leaning into Reese’s touch.

He had asked Marley to retrieve one of the horses that pull his sun chariot — he has asked so casually like he was asking them to grab something from a neighbouring cabin.

“i wish i said no.” Marley admitted, but they knew it was always going to end like this.

That made it feel like the fault was yours. As if you should’ve done something—should’ve been able to tell and avoid it. But there was no avoiding prophecies.

She knew that all too well.

Anger flared through her. This was no one’s fault. Not Marley’s, not hers, no one’s but…

Him. For a second, her grip became a little too harsh—before she corrected herself and loosened it, taking a breath.

“Yeah- and we all know how that would’ve went.” Reese scoffed sarcastically, humming in defeat as she rested her head against theirs.

the first thing i notice is the silence.

Not the silence of my mother's halls, where magic hums behind every wall and every room is waiting for instructions. Not the silence before a lecture. Not the silence before disappointment.

This silence breathes.

It rises with the waves beneath my stolen boat, stretches across the endless sea, and settles in my bones.

It was a warm, sunny afternoon. The sun was setting over Camp Half-Blood, and music floated out of the cabin as usual—and shouting.

“Oh my god, Michael! just get- out!” Following the shouts, a boy was then shoved out the wooden doors, laughing and raising his hands up in defense. A girl was right behind him—groaning in annoyance.

Reese.

“Don’t come back until I’m done!” She huffed, storming back inside. Weaving between cabin mates and bunk beds, she made her way to a tucked away spot near the back of the cabin. There was a messy bed, a full length mirror, and a makeshift vanity.

“Jesus-“ The girl sighed, standing in front of the mirror and starting to mess with her hair.

She’s getting ready for…something.

Do you walk in and approach her?

She gave Micheal an awkward wave before slipping past him and following Reese into the cabin.

Turning around—it was more visible what she was wearing. A nice yellow sundress, gold jewelry, and some brown Mary Jane shoes.

“Oh.” She blinked, ignoring the odd twisting sensation in her gut. That was good! Right?

“Oh- just..no one. Hermes kid. You know? Seemed fun.” She shrugged. “And no! Not rude at all, don’t worry.” Reese chuckled.

Gods what was wrong with her?

“Yeah, it’s fine. I get it. Bet they can be assholes sometimes.” She shrugged once more, sitting down on the bed and moving some stuff out of the way so Max could sit beside her.

“I’m fine— sorry just. Uh—“ Max wasn’t sure. “Just having an off day. I guess.”

“Well- I’m glad you did! Now I know that at least if my date goes bad, my whole day wasn’t. ‘Cause- you know. You’re here.” She flashed her a grin, cringing slightly. “Sorry- that was corny. Just…happy I got to see you.”
