The transformation of the term "Optimization" in architectural discourse: Find below a comment lifted from a conversation I have had with various people about why I use the term optimization, which is so loaded with Technocratic meaning in Architecture: " this is a usual misunderstanding that I have heard a couple of times. So, let me try to clarify. The way you are framing optimization I would say is in the camp of American pragmatism, or European technocratic approaches. I'm here on the same page with you. This is not what I'm interested into. (heck, I have been telling my students that culturally valuable architecture rarely is optimized.) However, when discussing optimization in the context of AI, it's a different story, as every single AI application performs an optimization routine. When you use Midjourney, that diffusion model is performing optimization along a Markov chain destructuring data and then structuring it back. Based on the prompt you make, it optimizes towards the goal to provide a robust result. What I'm trying to say is that even commonly used terminology such as "optimization" undergoes changes depending on the context it is used. In short, when I talk about optimization in the context of AI, the bandwidth of interpretation is very broad. In my case I'm curious to mine the existing bedrock of architectural know how (or history) to find "better" (another broad term) possible solutions for architectural problems - which not necessarily fall into the area of pure funtionalism."
