HIDDEN BEE DIB: SHMOOPS
Happy Zim day y'all 👽💛
Hey, big question. How did you guys found out about this show and why do you love this gremlin so very much?
In my case, I used to watch the show every morning before going to preschool. I remember feeling myself identified with Zim since... welp, I was a feral child who used to make others lose their patient very easily because of my hyperactive ass. I also remember to feel the relationship between Zim and the Tallest quite familiar with mine and my big sister back then.
22 years later, this little bitch is still my comfort character and I still love the show very much 👍
I was like 5 when the show came out so I never watched it when it initially aired. It wasn’t until the 2011/2012 era of Zim reruns on what I believe was the Nicktoons channel ( a sister channel to Nickelodeon that was solely for cartoons ) that I caught glimpses of it from time to time and got intrigued. I was in middle school at the time and watched Invader Zim as much as I could…mostly through YouTube where it would be divided into parts - mostly because I could never catch it on TV because I knew it was the sort of show my parents would hate if they caught me watching. I become very obsessed though and have fond memories of meeting friends through Zim and bonding over the show together. Ever since then it’s been something that’s always been a part of me and impacted me in many ways. Every so often I get back into it like it’s a sleeper agent. I think Zim ages well when you get older so I find it equally as entertaining as an adult if not more, as I did when I was a preteen.
I think one of my favorite tidbits of Zim production lore is how well the show did when it was shown to test children. Not sure if cartoons nowadays do this but children were used as a test audience, called by the studio to monitor their reactions to shows that are still in production. Invader Zim scored really well in this, I assume since this was the first test screening - they were shown the pilot episode. It was the highest positive reaction that executive producer, Mary Harrington ( who was the one to scout Jhonen ) had ever seen. After the initial test run, due to the rest of the people in the network being unsure - they kept testing Invader Zim with children and kept getting the same positive results. It’s really a “But are you sureee you like this?” Kinda response from the network- that promoted multiple testings. And yet Zim remained a hit among all the test children.
I love this fact. I love that my favorite unconventional kids show was so incredibly popular. And you know what else I love? That it's evidence that kids don't need or like the way society coddles them. One of the people making it (I can't remember which but I believe it was Eric Trueheart) said it themself in regards to these tests - kids are thrilled to see minor horror and dark humor. Putting kids in these (metaphorical) padded pastel boxes without any form of reality is just boring them and in many cases making them want to rebel.
Daniel Handler said something similar about A Series of Unfortunate Events. Kids liked the books because they felt like the stakes were more real because there wasn't an implicit promise that everything would turn out alright and because there's some catharsis in seeing a world that isn't sugar-coated in false promises about life being fair and just and adults being trustworthy, capable, and responsible caretakers.
There’s something to be said about adults and what *they* seem to think children would like. I think it’s insanely funny that Zim got tested a bunch of times because the network people were like “Huh- the guy we hired to do a cartoon made something weird - surely children couldn’t like it, let’s keep testing it with different kids” or something to that extent I imagine, only to be met with the same enthusiasm from the children, who are actively enjoying a show they were very nervous about. Which is also funny, because THEY are the ones who wanted something a bit edgy and different. The nervousness that Invader Zim conjured for these big wigs at Nick is both funny and tragic. Funny because they really were shocked when this guy who did horror comics for a living made a cartoon that was dark, and because it’s said some executives were even scared of said guy. And tragic because there was so much unsureness about Zim from Nickelodeon that only heightened post 9/11, and then all that led to its cancellation. ( or at least one of the big factors )
Because the show wasn’t wholesome enough, and was so unlike anything Nickelodeon had previously made….it was met with so little faith- and no regard for the fact that maybe children like dark things, maybe they like being scared - maybe they don’t need sunshine and rainbows in their cartoons all the time.
Reblogging this post again bc Zim day!! Happy 23rd anniversary to Invader ZIM!

The face of a little guy who has never done anything wrong ever. :)
Maybe I’m insane but making that Jhonen voices video made me realize I can recognize certain inflections or tones from how Jhonen talks to determine whether or not he voices a certain character. He can pitch up or down his voice all he wants but I will clock him LMAO
( almost ) Everytime Jhonen Vasquez voices a character on Invader Zim

Weed brownie zadf
Comic that this is based on
Watching an interview with Jhonen and what he says in this particular bit heavily reminded me of the points brought up in this post I did
GOTH DAD DIB GOTH DAD DIB GOTH DAD
I think Tak stims by playing with her hair while in disguise - twirling it in her fingers, running her fingers through strands or just taking one strand and playing with it, this mostly happens when she’s busy with something or particularly focused.
I think out of disguise, she’s developed a habit of trying to stim by playing with her antennae as a result - she tried twirling it in her fingers once but it hurt bc antennae are sensitive so she just gently rubs one of her antennae between her fingers instead. I think it would be really calming kinda like if you give yourself a massage so she does it in times of stress or when she feels overwhelmed.
Speaking of playlists - may I offer my GIR playlist?
This is pretty fun to listen to! If y’all like hyperpop and 2000s core - overall fun, silly vibes for the silliest little guy!

may i suggest face to face by siouxsie and the banshees for goth zadr? its on my zadr mix lol
Omg - I needed one more song to make the playlist get up to 12 bc if it’s not at least 12 songs - Spotify for some reason just chucks in their recommended song in there and that annoys the shit outta me.
I’ll listen to it later to decide - but it’ll most likely get on the playlist..thanks for the suggestion!!
Speaking of Zim production lore - I thought everyone would get a kick out of this excerpt from Eric Trueheart’s book The Medium-Sized Book of Zim Scripts: Vol. 1: Pigs 'n' Waffles - in which Eric describes his first experience with going into the Nickelodeon studio, only to find that there were some red gels being installed in the lights of the Zim office, supposedly to make everything a spooky red color but instead turned the whole place pink.
