Abel’s codename is “Plasma Snake” (real original I know), in my head I call his general story “metal gear plasma” so that’ll be the title if I ever make this a comic or a game. I’m actually considering making a rom hack of the original MSX2 games, so that might become a bit of a passion project over the summer or at least when I finish this semester of college.

I’m just now realizing that this makes Abel look like some BBKaz fan child.

He’s not, (lore dump):

Abel is a genetically engineered clone of Big Boss but not from Lés Enfants Terribles, he was actually made in a sister project called the “Designer Soldier” program. The DS program took fetuses and tweaked their genetic code using a cloned genome of BB to express traits to essentially make super soldiers. Abel accidentally fused with the cloned genome, and is therefore a chimera between a clone of Big Boss and a genetically modified soldier.

They were meant to be a commodity to be sold to militaries and PMC’s, and their bodies were made to mature fast and die early to keep demand high. The average life expectancy of a DS baby was around 20-25 years, with their bodies reaching full maturity around 7. Abel’s life expectancy is a bit longer at around 30 years, not that it really matters because he’s dead at 24 anyway.

The program lost steam and ended in 1986, when their team lead, Dr. Clark, left to help develop an experimental unit in Alaska (cough, cough, Foxhound, cough, cough). The overall project was a failure since most of the DS babies didn’t survive longer than a few hours after being born. And for the small percentage that did, they typically had major defects or psychological issues that made it impossible for them to even be trained. Abel is a part of the dozen or so DS babies that survived to full maturity and actually got to see action.

Abel was brought into the FOXHOUND unit at 15, and put directly under Bog Boss’ command. Big Boss, despite training Abel, never cared much about him. He saw Abel as nothing more than one of Dr. Clark’s experiments gone wrong, not fully human, but not an animal either. Instead, he was an asset to be molded and turned into something useful.

This is a concept from after one of Big Boss and Abel’s first CQC sessions. Abel lost a tooth and split his lip pretty badly, Dr. Clark was more than willing to stitch him up and send him on his way :)

For a while after this incident, Abel avoided Big Boss as much as possible, terrified of what the man might do to him next.

Deep down, Big Boss sees Abel as an extension of himself. A clone, yes, but fundamentally him. Due to this, he’s often angry and disappointed with Abel, who’s not very similar to him. It’s like uncanny valley for Big Boss, it walks like him, talks like him, but it’s not him. Abel doesn’t know any of this, he’s a kid and doesn’t understand why his dad hates him.
