i thought really hard about what pattern to use before finally cutting into this fabric; it's a remnant, so i wouldn't be able to buy more if i ruined it. the circle dress i finally went with makes the most of the yardage i had and shows off the print uninterrupted, just like i wanted. i'm very happy with how it turned out!
while planning, i was a little worried that the dress wouldn't be long enough on its own and bought 2 yards of another fabric to lengthen it with a ruffle, but i think i'm actually happy with the length as is--which is great, because by the time i finished the dress i was really not looking forward to making and adding a gathered ruffle. the hem of this dress is pretty wide, and i already had to sew around it 2.5 times (1x to hem the dress, 1.5x to hem the lining, because i messed up my first attempt and had to restart).
the would-be ruffle fabric is in the middle below. those short lines are made of shiny metallic silver threads, and the dark blue is sheer. i thought it'd give off rain vibes to pair with the hydrangeas, but now i'll have to find some other use for it. maybe something like this drawstring scarf...
pattern: smultron dress, view a
there aren't that many pieces to put together, so it's a relatively quick project, but it requires some patience (or just insane precision). i took my time and hand-basted the front yoke down before topstitching, but still had to unpick and redo sections of it a few times to get it to lay well.
fabric: hydrangea slub cotton jacquard
lining: cotton rayon voile
interfacing: cotton voile (left over from the dragonfly circle skirt), knit stay tape
i don't work much with prints, so this was my first time facing the dilemma of choosing a thread color for a multi-hue print. i ended up using a muted purple that stands out against the dark background, but blends in with the flowers and leaves.
fitting: n/a, circle dresses are forgiving and i didn't feel the need to adjust it
time: 7 days (1 to make mockup, 2 to cut fabric, 4 to sew)
mods:
swapped the thin spaghetti straps for wider adjustable straps (with heart-shaped sliders!)
added invisible zipper pockets by using this method and adding the pockets before binding the edges
added a little rouleau loop inside each pocket that i can clip things onto, like a transit card, wallet, keys, etc.
lengthened the dress by 11 3/4", which was the max possible given the width of the main fabric
added lining, since the main fabric was described as semi- to mostly opaque. it looked opaque enough to me, but i only ever checked it indoors, and i'd rather have lining i don't need than a dress i can't wear without a slip
bonus: a little round handkerchief i cut from one of the scraps, meant for drying my hands when i'm outside. i backed it with linen double gauze (left over from my green dress) which was the best option i had on hand for wicking & dissipating water, and added a loop so i could clip it onto a pocket/bag.
i also stitched along the hydrangea print to reflect it onto the green side. i considered stitching all the lineart, but my test run told me that would take ages, especially since i don't even have the right sewing foot for it. so i chose a few load-bearing lines and followed those to get the general silhouette across.
this is my second dress with this pattern; i was a little unsatisfied with my first one because of how snugly it fit around the hips. i switched to the shorter length so i could add extra flare to the skirt, making it more of a quarter circle shape for more ease. problem solved!
pattern: gibbons slip dress, view b
fabric: mustard viscose linen slub
time: 3 days (1 to cut fabric, 2 to sew). this pattern comes together quickly, it just took me forever to start because i don't like all the fuss that comes with cutting fabric on the bias
—
and while i'm at it, here's another finished project:
i like this pattern, but don't think i'll have the chance to use it again. i wasn't able to find suitable fabric that came in a color i really like 😔 i ended up settling for this dark brown.
pattern: cheoma top
this pattern runs 1-2 sizes large, so i was able to make it even though i'm not exactly on the size chart. still waiting for the day the designer expands her size range 🥲
fabric: espresso cotton jersey
time: 6 days (2 to prep pattern, 4 to cut fabric and sew). this is a quick project that could be sewn up much faster, i just didn't have the chance to work on this one continuously

[Radri, incredulous, is about to point out that he's the one who kissed her, but Xan keeps speaking.]
Xan: You have to stop risking your life! If you must do so, at least have the courtesy to do it when I'm not present! What is the use of leaving if you're just going to haunt me anyway?!
[Radri stares at him, shocked, and Xan falters and lets go of her, pulling back.]
Xan: It is clear… I cannot escape you if you do not wish it. But tell me one thing. Why me? Why spend two months chasing me, when you could have replaced me in a heartbeat?
Radri: I can't replace you.
Xan, tired: Radri… wizards like me are a silver a dozen. Perhaps, if I wielded the moonblade, it would be a different matter—but I will never return to Evereska for it. Not even if you commanded it.
Radri: Why do you always bring our conversations back to things that don't matter? I don't need a wizard. I want you.
[At those words, Xan finally lifts his head, looking Radri in the face. Her gaze is cast to the side, and there's an uncomfortable furrow in her brow, a small frown on her lips... all from being honest. Her arms are crossed, and her grip on her sleeve tightens as he stares.]
Radri: But you're right. I've spent too much on this chase already. If you want to leave, then do it. I will not follow you this time.
[Xan can hardly believe what he's hearing. All his efforts of the past two months are finally being rewarded. But rather than relief, a sudden loneliness grips him, instead. He had not felt such loneliness even on the night he'd slipped away from her without a word; deep down, he'd known that he could count on seeing her again.]
Xan: If you want me… I will stay.
[Radri's eyes meet his as his words sink in... then she hugs him. It's the first hug she's ever given him. His mind goes blank, and he only barely manages to form the thought that he should commit this feeling to memory, only for her to finish her hug and release him. Radri looks up at the surprise on his face, and makes an unusually uncertain expression herself.]
Radri: I just...
[She turns her head away sharply.]
Radri: You kissed me.
[Now that she mentions it, in the heat of the moment, a temporary madness had claimed him and he had kissed her. A belated warmth climbs up the back of his neck.]
Radri: Since you took that, I'll take this. We're even.
[That only leaves him with much more to comment on, but before he can, she grabs the hem of his sleeve.]
Radri: Come on.
[She walks away, tugging him along with her. He stumbles on his first couple steps, then quickens his pace, and falls in step beside her. Before, being led like this had made him feel like a dog on a leash… but now he wonders if this isn't just her way of holding his hand.]

It is time to rest, I see. I wish to say goodbyes, for it is possible neither of us will survive the night. Be it the hordes of the Underdark, or the legions of undead, they will creep upon us in the dark, pierce our unseeing eyes, and this reverie will turn out to be the last.
*sigh* Not again!
giving xan’s romance the art i wanted to give it years ago ♡
