    the storm that rages outside is music to frankie’s exhausted ears. once upon a time it would have scared her, but the heavy, rhythmic pitter-patter of rain against windows is now more calming than frightening. it drowns out the sound of drag races, rumbles, and, apparently, the sound of the front door slamming against its hinges. it’s not until he shouts that she suspects anything out of the ordinary, bolting completely upright with a startled yelp.  ‘  soda ... ‘  mouth opens, then closes, then opens once more       she doesn’t want to interfere with his personal business, but he doesn’t look like he’s in the mood to handle it by himself.  ‘  what happened?  ‘
