Typologies & Archetypes
The dictionary definition of ‘Typology’ is -
noun 4.
Linguistics. the study and classification of languages according to structural features, especially patterns of phonology, morphology, and syntax, without reference to their histories.
The dictionary definition of ‘Archetypes’ is -
noun 1. the original pattern or model from which all things of the same kind are copied or on which they are based; a model or first form; prototype.
Typology is the classification and Archetypes is something or someone; it is the primary example. This lecture was really interesting because it focused on collections of artistic images or studies (drawings). Some of them; like for example - Nicholas Nixon, The Brown Sisters, 1975 – 2014. Heather, Mimi, Bebe and Laurie. ‘The Brown Sisters’ collection is a collection of images from the photographer’s wife and sisters; every year they take a group picture; where they stay in the same order, it shows different ages, and how they matured over time. But that could also relate to relationships from the gazes off the sister’s into the camera; which is the photographer.
But it can also show some discovery of research and categorise species by recording their specific features. An example of this is Cornelia Hesse-Honegger, Chernobyl insects, 1990. Where she painted different patterns and unique features of the insects in order to specify them.
