There was no hiding what it meant to him to hear her say that. Corners of his lips pulled upwards ever so slightly and his eyes with little smile lines on either side. His chest was warmer but not uncomfortably so, and there was no numbness in his fingers like he often had. Aside from all these factors, his mind told him the same thing he told himself every time he was reminded of the common human way of expressing devotion to another. With those three words that were just words.

He knew now that they were much more than just words because Trist had taught him that and made him want to express himself more. Showing and doing was still their most used way of letting the other know how much they meant, but now that they had begun saying it too Tobias couldn’t deny that he liked hearing it. It was another example of how Tris could take a meaningless thing or uncomfortable memory in his past and turn it into something good and healthy.
