Spaced (1999-2001)

This was a short lived sitcom on Channel 4 in the UK, I saw bits of it at the time when I was a kid. But it wasn't until I got my own flat and a flat mate in 2004 that I saw all of it as said flat mate had it on VHS. I got the DVD boxset shortly after as I fell in love with this series, the music, the setting and overall vibe.

It really did capture a moment in time not only in the age of the characters but the pre-internet is everywhere era too. It also mixed that being geeky but still kinda cool which to me in my early twenties I was trying to be.

It was also the origins or stepping stone for some major careers of the actors and the directors. The music was brilliant and has also stuck with me, the "Lemon Jelly" albums from the time are still in my music rotation today.

Watching it now though a lot of the tech and some of the cultural references might be dated but I think the emotional core of it still resonates.

Anyway this photo that looks like it's just a casual snap taken with friends is a behind the scenes photo that one of the creators uploaded to social media a few years ago (now deleted account and I can't remember the name). I found these while having a clear out of an old drive, akin to finding photos in a shoe box in the attic. It really did feel like seeing photos of old friends too as I watched this a few times in my twenties, especially when I moved into a new flat, which happened a lot back then as renting sucks.

Then Simon posted this a few months later. If you don’t know the song he attached to it, look it up. It’s very clear Simon chose it intentionally.

There’s no way to predict what it’s going to be about but I’ve heard whispers that it might lean more towards drama than their other works so I wouldn’t be surprised if it deals with mental health.

Both Simon and Nick have been very open about struggling with depression and trying to slowly kill themselves, Simon with alcohol and Nick with food, due to feeling isolated (Simon’s depression is more of a hormonal disorder while Nicks’s is a reaction to trauma and PTSD) which was why Gary was a depressed and suicidal alcoholic in The World’s End.

They’ve also been very open about their queerplatonic relationship that’s far deeper and more physical than a regular friendship.

By now most people know about them sharing a one-person bed for nine months out of necessity when they were young and they occasionally sleep and cuddle in bed for comfort even to this day. In his memoir Nick mentions several times that they like holding hands when they’re scared (like when a visit to a strip club with Tarantino turned dangerous or when they went ghost hunting together) or when they’re feeling cuddly but are out in polite society. When Nick’s mom died he collapsed on the floor of his hotel room crying and screaming for Simon who rushed in to hold him and it didn’t even occur to them that Nick was naked the whole time until afterwards. None of this ever bothered Simon’s wife because she trusted Simon wasn’t cheating on her with Nick, but Nick’s wife demanded they stop sharing beds after her and Nick got married. They did out of respect for her (though Simon visited Nick the night before the wedding so they could sleep together one last time) but the marriage only lasted five years and they got right back to it.

But they also had to acknowledge that while they’re each other’s biggest comfort they haven’t always been the best for each other when it came to coping with their mental health. They had to get better separately to be happy and healthy together later.

Simon especially has talked about how being part of the Mission Impossible franchise saved him because it surrounded him with people who knew how to help him overcome his alcohol addiction.

Seeing how both Simon and Nick likes to play roles that are adjacent to their own situations and Edgar very much encourages them to normalize talking about mental health as well as be ambassadors for non-sexual male intimacy I wouldn’t be surprised if they lean into that considering the post Simon made. Everything around that is a complete mystery tho.

nicholas's inability to switch off only becomes a problem in danny's eyes when nicholas tells him that it's a problem for him. and danny's not judgy about it, he's just like "ok i'll help you, let's have fun together :)" and the only time he gets mad about it is in response to nicholas having a go at him. whereas most of the other characters, whether they like him or not, meet nicholas and immediately think he needs to change.

one sided clive x graeme.. DONT THROW TOMATOES PLEASE HEAR ME OUT!!

like i know it’s a ship people already like but the whole conversation with paul and clive in the rv has always just given me the vibe that clive has (or has had) feelings for graeme ; ones that he hasn’t outwardly expressed because he knows that graeme doesn’t see him that way.

it also explains why they’re both so adamant about telling people that they’re not together. graeme does it because he genuinely doesn’t want the assumption that they’re together, while clive (to me) is only going along with denying the assumptions to downplay how he feels.

also i don’t know, i think we need some more rep for doomed pegg & frost character pairings!

Clives one sided pining for Graeme is peak angst and doomed attraction, and it may just be wishful thinking but I like to think that (like hot fuzz) it may have been canonical or intentional atleast to a point. His jealousy is stated pretty obviously, whether that be romantic or platonic, its clear he definitely has feelings for him.

Unfortunately the popularity of one sided Clive x Graeme has led to there being absolutely no fics where they get together and live happily and that makes me sad </3
