The ballroom buzzed with conversation long before the Minister took the stage.
Crystal chandeliers floated overhead, filling the room with warm light that reflected off polished marble and glittering robes. A quartet played somewhere near the center of the hall, their music drifting effortlessly through the crowd.
Draco rested his hand lightly against yours.
"Ready?" he asked quietly.
You smiled.
"I've been ready for the last ten minutes. You're the one who kept adjusting your cufflinks."
"I adjusted them once."
"Three times."
"...Twice."
She laughed softly.
His fingers intertwined with hers as they stepped farther into the ballroom. He never pulled or pushed, only offered his arm when she wanted it, describing the room only when she asked.
"Busy?" she murmured.
"Horribly."
"Important people?"
"Unfortunately."
Another laugh escaped her, earning the smallest smile from Draco.
The evening passed peacefully.
Old classmates greeted them warmly. Ministry officials from the ministry of magic congratulated Draco on his latest work, and more than one witch complimented your hair. It were one of the Many great traits she had, long beautiful hair that practically almost touched the floor. She thanked each of them with effortless grace, making conversation so naturally that most people forgot within moments that she couldn't see them.
Most people.
"Draco."
The unfamiliar voice was silky, almost overly sweet.
Draco's expression cooled instantly.
"you.."
You felt the subtle shift beside her.
"You know each other?" she asked.
"We attended Hogwarts together," Draco answered simply.
The woman gave a soft laugh.
"It's been ages. I almost didn't recognize you."
"I can't say the same."
There was a beat of silence before her attention settled on You.
"So..." she began pleasantly, "you're Draco's wife."
"I am."
"I've heard quite a bit about you."
"I hope only good things."
"Oh, of course."
The words were kind.
The tone wasn't.
"I must admit, though..." she continued, "I was rather surprised."
Draco already knew where this was headed.
"Were you?"
"Well... I always imagined Draco marrying someone who could keep up with the sort of life expected of a Malfoy."
Your smile remained perfectly composed, but she didn't.
"And I don't?" Your tone seemed to shift into a more composed annoyance.
"Oh, I didn't mean it like that." she laughed lightly. "It's just... society events, Ministry galas... I imagine they're difficult for you."
"Oh, not at all. But they sometimes can be" In Your mind, she was ready to throw hands with this absurd woman.
"And surely Draco spends most of the evening making sure you're all right."
You squeezed Draco's hand once.
A silent reminder.
Not yet.
She answered first.
"I spend most evenings making sure he's all right."
A small snort escaped Draco before he could stop it.
The woman's smile faltered.
"Still" she continued, "it must be... limiting."
"I don't find my life particularly limited."
"I only meant..." she hesitated. "...someone like Draco has always had every option."
The implication hung between them.
Someone like you.
Why would he choose someone like her?
Draco finally spoke.
"Are you suggesting I settled for what? less..?"
she blinked.
"I—no."
"Because it sounds remarkably like you're suggesting I married my wife despite who she is."
"That's not what I—"
"My wife," Draco interrupted, his voice calm enough that it drew more attention than shouting ever could, "is one of the most remarkable witches I've ever known."
The conversations nearest them began to quiet.
"She manages our home, advises me when I need another perspective, remembers every conversation better than I do, and somehow still has the patience to tolerate me."
Y/n couldn't stop herself from smiling.
"If anything," Draco continued smoothly, "I'm the one relying on her."
A few quiet chuckles rippled through the crowd.
The woman shifted uncomfortably.
"I wasn't trying to be rude."
"I believe you weren't trying to understand my decision."
She opened her mouth.
He continued before she could speak.
"So let me save you the trouble."
His hand found Yours again.
"I didn't marry her in spite of pity."
His thumb brushed gently across her knuckles.
"I married her because she's brilliant. Because she's kind. Because she makes me laugh even on days I don't particularly wish to. Because she's stronger than anyone I've ever met."
His eyes never left the woman's.
"And because every morning I wake up wondering how I managed to convince someone so extraordinary to spend forever with me."
The room had gone almost completely silent.
The woman looked between the two of them before forcing a brittle smile.
"I suppose... congratulations are in order."
"They were five years ago, you're a bit late for that" Draco replied evenly.
She gave a short nod before disappearing into the crowd, embarrassment hanging from her shoulder.
Only after she was well out of earshot did You tug gently on Draco's sleeve.
"Come with me."
He looked at her curiously.
Without another word, she led him away from the ballroom, down a quieter corridor lit by enchanted lamps. The distant music faded until only muffled strings echoed through the hall.
"You know," Draco said, "most wives drag their husbands away to kiss them."
"Who says I won't?"
His eyebrows lifted.
"I stand corrected."
She laughed, the sound finally breaking the tension that had settled over her chest.
When they reached a small balcony overlooking the Ministry gardens, she rested her hands on the stone railing.
For a moment, neither of them spoke.
"You didn't have to do that," she said quietly.
"I know."
"You know I could've handled her."
"I know."
She turned toward the sound of his voice.
"Then why?"
Draco stepped closer until their hands found each other again.
"Because she wasn't asking questions."
He paused.
"She'd already decided you weren't enough."
His voice remained calm, but she could hear the hurt tucked beneath it.
"I've spent five years watching people underestimate you."
He brushed a loose strand of hair behind her ear.
"It never gets easier."
She smiled softly.
"I don't want you fighting every battle for me."
"I'm not."
His thumb traced lazy circles across the back of her hand.
"I'm simply refusing to let someone speak about the woman I love as though she's anything less than extraordinary."
Silence settled comfortably between them.
Finally, You reached up and straightened his tie.
"You know..."
"What?"
"You behaved yourself."
"I was remarkably restrained."
"You were."
"I considered hexing her."
She laughed.
"No, you didn't."
"...Only briefly."
She shook her head, still smiling.
"You're impossible."
"So I've been told."
"Mostly by me."
"Your opinion is the only one I care about."
Her heart softened.
"I've never seen your blindness as something to fix," he said quietly.
"I know."
"I've only ever seen it as one part of the woman I fell in love with."
She reached up, cupping his cheek.
"You're terribly sentimental tonight."
"I'm married."
"You've been married for five years."
"Exactly."
A laugh escaped her before she leaned forward, pressing a gentle kiss to his lips.
When they finally pulled apart, the orchestra inside shifted into a slower melody.
"We're missing the dance," she murmured.
Draco smiled.
"I suppose we are."
"So..."
"So?"
"Take me back inside."
He offered his arm.
"Let's stay here for a bit, darling." This was requested by one of my friends for $5, so I decided to lock in. I hope anybody else who reads this enjoys! Please boost guys٩(^ᗜ^ )و ´-

The Prefects' Bathroom was never truly silent.
Even at two in the morning, enchanted bubbles drifted lazily across the surface of the enormous marble pool, the dozens of golden taps shaped like jeweled snakes, lions, badgers, and eagles continuously pouring steaming water scented with lavender and eucalyptus. Hundreds of candles floated overhead, their reflections dancing across the polished white marble.
It had become Your sanctuary.
Every night, once the castle had settled into sleep, you'd slip from your dormitory with your robe folded neatly over one arm and disappear into the one place you knew would always be empty.
Or so you thought.
you stepped inside, already loosening the ribbon around your robe before freezing.
A voice echoed softly through the mist.
"...Is anyone there?"
Your footsteps slowed.
Curious, you followed the sound around the curtain of steam.
Then you saw him.
Cedric Diggory.
He sat half submerged in the bubbling water, elbows resting on the marble edge of the enormous bath, damp hair falling across his forehead. His eyes widened just as much as hers did.
"...Cedric?"
He blinked.
"Y/N?"
For a second neither of you spoke.
Then you laughed quietly.
"I figured I'd be alone tonight... again."
You smiled warmly.
"But company is always good."
Cedric let out a surprised chuckle.
"Didn't think anyone else would be using the bathroom this late."
"I could say the same."
Silence settled between you two for a moment, not uncomfortable, merely unexpected.
You shifted awkwardly, still wrapped in your robe.
"Sorry... do you mind?"
Cedric's eyes immediately darted toward the opposite wall.
"Not at all."
Without another word, he politely turned his head away.
You smiled to yourself.
Such a gentleman.
you untied your robe, folded it carefully onto one of the marble benches, and eased herself into the warm water.
The bath was enormous, more like a luxurious swimming pool than a bathtub.
Water rippled softly.
Only after he heard the gentle splash did Cedric glance back.
You had already settled yourself in the water, steam curling around your shoulders as you slowly swam toward him.
Not close enough to touch.
Just close enough that the distance between them felt intentional.
Comfortable.
Dangerous.
"So..."
Your lips curled into a teasing smile.
"What's the Golden Boy doing here?"
Cedric couldn't help smiling back.
He sighed.
"Too much on my mind."
That was all he needed to say.
The entire castle already knew.
Cedric Diggory.
Hufflepuff Prefect.
Quidditch Captain.
The student everyone admired.
The boy chosen by the Goblet of Fire.
Triwizard Champion.
The weight of that title followed him everywhere.
Professors watched him more carefully.
Students whispered whenever he walked by.
Even breakfast had become exhausting.
Everyone expected bravery.
Confidence.
Perfection.
No one ever asked if he was frightened.
You rested your arms along the edge of the bath.
"Well..."
You offered him a gentle smile.
"I'm always here to listen."
Cedric's breath caught.
Something about how sincerely she said it unraveled a knot he'd been carrying for weeks.
Slowly, he leaned back against the marble.
"It's just..."
His thumb brushed absentmindedly across his lower lip, a nervous habit almost nobody ever noticed.
"The pressure feels different now."
He watched the bubbles drift between them.
"The tournament's making everything louder."
Another quiet sigh.
"The whole school watches me like I'm some hero they need me to be."
His smile faded.
"But I don't feel like a hero."
You tilted her head.
"How come?"
You gave him a tiny grin.
"Everybody envies your success."
Cedric laughed softly.
It was genuine.
But tired.
"I never actually thought I'd get chosen."
His eyes drifted toward the candlelit ceiling.
"And now that it happened..."
He shook his head.
"It's terrifying."
"I don't want to disappoint anyone."
The words came out almost as a whisper.
You listened without interrupting.
Then you spoke.
"You don't always have to satisfy other people's expectations."
Simple.
Honest.
Yet somehow...
No one had ever said that to him before.
Most people admired him.
Others relied on him.
Nobody gave him permission to stop carrying everyone else's hopes.
Cedric looked down at the shimmering water.
"If I backed down..."
He swallowed.
"It would feel like giving up on something bigger than myself."
"The tournament exists to unite magical schools."
"If I walked away..."
A crooked smile appeared.
"I think it'd hurt more than getting hit by a Bludger."
You laughed.
The sound echoed warmly around the enormous room.
"That's very honorable of you, Diggory."
You looked at him curiously.
"But if I might ask..."
Your voice softened.
"Is putting yourself down really better than letting other people down?"
Silence.
Long enough that the only sounds were bubbling water and dripping marble.
Finally
"No."
Cedric's answer barely rose above the steam.
"It's not."
He rubbed the back of his neck.
"I've been so focused on not disappointing everyone..."
"I never stopped to ask if pushing myself this hard is actually helping anyone."
He gave a tired laugh.
"And maybe saying no would've been selfish—"
"It's not."
You interrupted him gently.
"Sometimes putting yourself first is a good thing."
Something inside him loosened.
His shoulders, tense for what felt like weeks, finally relaxed.
The constant weight he'd been carrying didn't disappear...
But for one brief moment
It became lighter.
He smiled.
Not the polished smile he gave teachers.
Not the confident smile he wore after Quidditch victories.
This one was quiet.
Real.
"You know..."
Cedric chuckled.
"You're really good at this."
His eyes met yours through the drifting steam.
There was no audience here.
No professors.
No cheering students.
Just two people sitting in warm water while the rest of Hogwarts slept.
For the first time in weeks...
He felt understood.
Without thinking
Without planning
His hand lifted.
Slowly.
Carefully.
His fingertips brushed against her cheek.
Warm.
Soft.
Gentle enough that she almost questioned whether it had really happened.
A tiny gasp escaped your lips before she could stop it.
Cedric froze.
Only then did he realize what he'd done.
You instinctively leaned back.
Not dramatically.
Just enough.
Enough for him to understand.
"I..."
Your voice shook.
"I'm sorry..."
"We shouldn't..."
His heart sank.
Immediately his hand fell back into the water.
"Oh..."
His face filled with regret.
"Y/N..."
"I'm sorry."
There was no excuse.
No attempt to laugh it off.
Only genuine remorse.
"I shouldn't have done that."
He turned slightly away, giving her space.
His chest tightened.
Making anyone uncomfortable was the last thing he'd ever wanted.
Especially You.
You hugged your arms around yourself beneath the water.
"It's not your fault..."
She looked down.
"But we really shouldn't."
A pause.
"Aren't you with Cho?"
The question landed like a stone.
Cedric closed his eyes briefly.
Cho.
Sweet.
Kind.
Patient.
Someone he cared about deeply.
"...Yeah."
His answer came quietly.
"I am."
You nodded to herself.
"She's my friend."
Her voice trembled now.
"I'd never do anything to hurt her."
"I know you wouldn't—"
"I'm sorry."
You cut him off before he could continue.
"I have to go."
Quickly, you climbed from the bath.
Cedric immediately turned his head toward the opposite wall.
Giving her privacy.
Just as he had before.
He listened to the quiet rustle of fabric.
The tying of a robe.
Soft footsteps across marble.
Then
The heavy bathroom door creaked open.
Closed.
Silence.
Only after several seconds did he finally turn around.
She was gone.
The bath suddenly felt much larger than before.
The candles still floated overhead.
The bubbles still shimmered across the water.
Everything looked exactly the same.
Yet somehow...
The room had never felt emptier.
Cedric remained there for several minutes, staring at the doorway she'd disappeared through.
His fingers unconsciously brushed the water where she'd been moments earlier.
He let out a slow breath.
"...Brilliant, Diggory."
He muttered to himself with a humorless smile.
"You've managed to complicate everything."
Outside the bathroom, You leaned against the cold stone wall, your heartbeat refusing to slow.
You pressed trembling fingers to the place on your cheek where his hand had rested.
The warmth had already faded.
But somehow...
She could still feel it. If this gets enough attention supposedly 50 likes, I'll make a part 2! Please boost this guys I'd highly appreciate it (♡ˊ͈ ꒳ ˋ͈)
