I forgot to bring this up too!

Yes people tend to confuse service animals with emotional support animals. If your someone who legitimately struggles with anxiety attacks it may be a good thing to look into a service dog for PTSD related attacks.

I hate when people bring their dogs In places who clearly aren’t trained in hopes that they don’t get kicked out. Like no, and then especially when they through a fit and say the equivalent of well how come they can have their dog…. Because it’s a trained service dog my guy, yours is an emotional support animal.

Now like the comic said (which the comic is very cool/good informative one too!!)

Service dogs are not there for your attention. They are there to perform a job.

And if you have children, you need to be teaching them this.

And if you not only don’t do that, but also let your children reach out and try to interact with a dog who is working, you’re not only a shitty parent, but a shitty person as well.

Outside of the working aspect alone, you have no idea if my dog bites. He won’t—he doesn’t have a single mean bone in his body—but what if he did? What if he did and your child reached out to pet him and he snapped at them? Are you gonna get pissed at me? Most likely.

If someone asks to interact with him, 9 times out of ten, I let them have a quick interaction. But not asking? Genuinely fuck you.

Fucking entitlement.

I’ve had a lot of folks use him as an opportunity to teach their kids about what a service dog is and what it does, and why they can’t say hi to the cute puppy, and it genuinely makes me so happy to see, especially when there’s parents on this end of the spectrum.

Shit, I have full grown adults do this too. You know how many older guys like to come up and shove their hand in his face without asking? Too many. Great too, considering he’s there for C-PTSD, and a lot of that trauma is centered around older men. So now, you’re not only serving as a distraction for my service dog, but also flaring up the condition that he’s there for, and sending me into a severe panic attack that he’s now going to have to work double-time to get me through.

He is an aid.

Yes, he’s a dog.

Yes, he’s cute.

Yes, I know he has a boopable snoot and a pettable noggin.

No, he is not there for you and your children to stick their fingers in his face while he’s trying to work.

No, he is not there for your fucking entertainment.

Because above all else, when he is working,

He. Is. My. Aid.

My dog is still in training, and he listened, and he did great, and he ignored them like I told him to. He’s amazing.

If you want to say hi, ask. You may be told no, and that’s okay.

But NEVER, and I mean NEVER reach out to say hi without asking. If he was a medical alert dog, he could miss a physical symptom and it could kill me.

Here’s my lil rant.

I agree with everything this person says. Service dogs get mistreated by the public way too often. It’s common sense too, to not feed animals that’s not yours. If you can’t pay a vet bill then think twice before feeding an animal YOU DO NOT Own!

Don’t even get me started on fake service dogs. Fake service dogs give real service dogs a bad rep, some people (like my best friend) need their service dog. That’s literally why under the law they are considered medical equipment, like a wheelchair, cane, dogs can provide mobility aid. Or for people with PTSD it can help em as/with a coping mechanism.

If you really need a service dog take the time to train one, not bringing your average dog in stores (like Walmart for an example). I could literally rant for days about this, as someone with a good friend who’s even explained that fake service dogs have made ACTUAL service dogs literally have to retire because they get nervous around other dogs because of those types of people with possibly aggressive “service dogs” it pisses me off.

Also another thing: registration scams!!! OH MY Gosh the amount of schools, cops, and stores who believe in that and don’t take the time to look at the ADA laws (hopefully I recalled the correct short term, I’ll edit it if need be dw. As I have trouble remembering some short term words and I also don’t wanna spread misinformation).

The fact that some service dogs have to wear protective eyewear also says a lot, there was this one service dog on a video who the owner had worn because people have gone up to service dogs and tried to poke them in the eye. Like what are we doing???

If it wasn’t a service dog would ya still poke the literal animal in the eye. Teach kids not to like animals in the eye now too.

The shit with registration is so wild to me too. There is a legitimate registration—which I need to clarify IS NOT NECESSARY—that you can go through. I did it with mine simply because it gets folks who know nothing to shut the hell up. He’s got an ID card and everything, which again, need to reiterate is not required, but it can save you the headache and arguments (of which I have had prior to the ID, now I just whip it out and go “here’s his registration, now fuck off” to anyone who wants to cause problems 😂

It’s such a large misconception and there will be folks that try to argue this to their graves even though you know more than they do, seeing as you HAVE ONE

This is the registry I used. It was free and like I said, I did it to not have to argue my case everywhere we went when someone wanted to start something:

The same company actually has an id card that you can get, which I’ll include here as well. It has a section on the back that explains what a service animal is, the questions allowed to be asked—SUPER IMPORTANT, they can only ask you 2 and anyone who tells you otherwise is LYING. The card actually points out that there’s no requirement for identification, but again, like I said it makes it easier sometimes :)

The questions are:

Is the service animal required for a disability?

And what task does this animal perform?

YOU DO NOT HAVE TO DISCLOSE ANY OF YOUR MEDICAL INFO TO ANYONE. I REPEAT THEY CAN NOT ASK FOR YOUR CONDITION AND IT IS NONE OF THEIR DAMN BUSINESS.

Regarding the protective eyewear, I’ve not had anyone try to poke him in the eyes, but when we brought him to Con he was in a cosplay with goggles. He had them on his head most of the time, he prefers them not on his face—we’d occasionally do it for photos, he’s a good sport lol—and this kid kept putting the goggles over his eyes over and over again. Like he asked to see it once (which I got a lot of, I put the goggles on his face for five seconds, got the “awwwe” from whoever wanted to see, took them off and he got rewarded with so much love afterwards, but like that doesn’t mean YOU can keep doing this. It’s one thing for me to put them over his face for five seconds—he’s comfortable with me and I’m not keeping them on—it’s another for a random stranger he doesn’t know to continuously put something on his face.
