while we're at it here are some examples of stuff I did in this coloring style without the brush pack-- as you can see they look fine but not quite As good.

btw this process is basically the same any brush sets like these will use-- this one tiktoker I see does it a lot.

It works like any printer- you're putting down layers for cyan, magenta, yellow, and black to get any color. however, when doing comics until the early 90s, the way comics were printed meant that they couldn't just combine colors in any old combination, they could only work with 100%, 50%, 25% or nothing. in the 80s they got 75% added, which gave them a lot more colors to work with-- I used to only use the first 3 cos it was hard to set up all those colors, but now I use all 4 because my brush set makes it easy.

the limited colors along with the paper they were printed on gives comic coloring that unique look-- it's why reprints of old comics using their original colors look universally shitty; because the colorists were working with their limitations in mind- particularly that the printed colors would be duller and muddied by the newsprint

anyways. how you do this is you need screen tones that serve as your 100%, (75%), 50% and 25% of each color. I did that by using CSP's already built in halftones feature, see layers here

make sure each color folder itself is set to multiply (no need to set each individual level to multiply) so the colors mix properly. uhh if anyone wants this document with all the stuff already set up I can put a google drive link for it somewhere.

anyways once you have your layers & whatever you wanna color you'll have to plan what colors you want to put where. that's why it's handy to have a palette on hand of how they'll look finished, because it's a bit different than how they're gonna look when you're putting them down basic style.

as you can see here, I then go in and label every single color with it's code. after that I fill in the colors manually, so put in all the cyans at their noted opacities, the same for yellow and magenta, etc.

the good thing w doing that without the proper brush set is that I could just select my already done colors & use the fill tool; since the levels are by brush w the brush set you gotta color everything manually. good podcast listening time.

the last thing I'd do is offset them to get that vibe -- you can see that the true grit brushes come are already offset so that you can See the blue yellow and magenta dots whenever you look at it, with the way I used to do it the dots would all be in the same place and the only way to shift them would be rasterizing the layers and moving them a bit individually.
