The cafe was buzzing with the usual lunch crowd—students hunched over laptops, local office workers grabbing quick midday meals. Behind the counter, a girl who looked like the manager was steaming milk at the espresso machine, looking like she was about three seconds away from throwing the pitcher at the wall. As she reached up to grab a stack of lids, Kai caught the glint of a wedding band on her ring finger. Okay, scratch her off the list, he thought.
Beside her, a tall girl in a claw clip was rapidly packing some to-go orders, completely in the zone.
And then there was the girl at the register.
The moment Taehyun stepped up a bit in line, her head snapped up. Kai, who was half-listening to Taehyun complain about some assignment, caught the exact moment her posture went completely stiff.
Oh, Kai thought, his eyes widening slightly. Hold on.
She was holding a black marker, and the second she saw Taehyun, she literally fumbled it, dropping it onto the counter with a loud clack. She scrambled to grab it, her cheeks instantly flushing a bright, unmistakable pink.
Kai grinned, immediately stepping back a bit to let Taehyun take the lead, watching out of the corner of his eye.
Taehyun, completely oblivious to the silent panic attack happening three feet in front of him, stepped up to the counter. "Hey. Can I get a caramel macchiato and the kimchi fried rice, please?"
"U-uh, yeah! Of course," she stammered, her voice a little high. She tapped the screen with a trembling finger, keeping her eyes glued to the register, refusing to look Taehyun in the eye. "Is that... is that everything?"
Kai stepped up, flashing a bright, entirely too-cheerful grin. "Hi! Can I get an iced matcha latte, and the bulgogi bibimbap, please?"
Taehyun let out a quiet, suffering sigh next to him.
The girl at the register nodded quickly, her face still a solid shade of crimson. "Sure! Your total is 25,500 won."
Taehyun tapped his card against the reader, paying for both of them before Kai could even reach for his wallet.
"G-great, uhm heres the buzzer it’ll a-alarm once your order is ready," she mumbled, still staring at her screen like it held the secrets to the universe.
"Thanks," Taehyun said, offering a polite, entirely neutral nod.
As soon as they turned around to grab a table near the window, the girl let out a massive, visible sigh of relief, her shoulders dropping. She immediately grabbed a fresh cup, her marker flying across the plastic in a quick, frantic scribble before she slid it down the line to the espresso bar.
They slid into a corner table that’s next to the window, and the moment Taehyun sat down to pull out his phone, Kai's hands were already flying across his screen under the table.

The black buzzer vibrated, grabbing the attention of both Taehyun and Kai.
Taehyun looked up from his screen, sighed, and slid out of the booth before Kai could even make a move. "I’ll get it.”
The tall girl in the claw clip was placing their trays on the counter—the steaming bowls of kimchi fried rice and bulgogi bibimbap, alongside their drinks. Taehyun carefully balanced the heavy trays and made his way back, setting them down on the wooden table with a soft clatter.
"That smells so good," Kai said, immediately pulling his bowl of bibimbap closer and grabbing his chopsticks.
Taehyun slid into the booth across from him. He adjusted his tray, and only then did he finally reach for his caramel macchiato.
As his fingers wrapped around the cardboard sleeve, he paused.
Kai, who had his mouth half-full of rice, stopped chewing. There it was. A fresh scribble of black ink stood out against the transparent cup.
Taehyun just stared down at the handwritten note. His expression, usually a fortress of mild annoyance and absolute stoicism, cracked. A barely noticeable, microscopic smile twitched at the corner of Taehyun's lips before he quickly cleared his throat, wiped the expression clean, and took a sip like nothing happened.
Kai's soul practically left his body. HE SMILED. KANG TAEHYUN JUST SMILED RIGHT IN FRONT OF ME.
The second Taehyun looked down to mix his kimchi fried rice, Kai dropped his chopsticks, grabbed his phone, and dived under the edge of the table to furiously text Seol.
