The funniest part of A New Hope is that Luke Skywalker is a 19 year old who has not locked in yet and plays with toys and sleeps in his childhood bedroom at his aunt and uncle’s house and Leia Organa is a 19 year old with a mission to save the galaxy from fascism. Luke has never left his hometown, Leia just watched her planet be blown up. He’s peeved his uncle is asking him to do his chores, she’s imprisoned for resisting the government. You relate to them both but they’re on complete opposite sides of the 19 year old life stage spectrum.
Yes! Some people have misinterpreted this as me insinuating Luke is a wimp but he’s just in a very transitional life phase that is focused on growing and maturing. His friends are growing up and moving on, he’s anxious to join them but isn’t quite ready. He has ambition and goals but he just isn’t in a place where he is able to pursue those goals, he is immature and that isn’t a bad thing. 19 year olds SHOULD be able to ponder their place in the world and which direction they want their life to take. Leia has been in the public eye her entire life, she is a princess, she has been primed for greatness and she has been shouldered with so much responsibility. Luke is just his aunt and uncle’s nephew, they love him and don’t want him to leave, he’s trying to decide what to do.
He’s like a Midwest farm boy who is dreaming of the big city and she is like an old money New England heiress who has been told since birth she will follow her father’s career path into politics and has been sent to the most competitive schools and enrolled in the most rigorous extracurriculars.
I would say that, like with any character, it’s heavily dependent on the situation. For luke also the era, to an extent.
To keep it sort of simple and not extremely long I’ll focus on ROTJ and beyond since that’s the era I write for him the most, and it’s my favorite version of his character.
For the most part he’s mellowed out a ton at this point. I notice in ROTJ and the EU books after that at his baseline he speaks in a more “formal” manner. Very even tones, very respectful and calm, always kind and looking for the best in both people and the situation he’s in. When he’s trying to be more Jedi-like it seems like he’s conscious of every word he chooses to say, if that makes sense. To a bystander he probably seems pretty reserved and quiet, and some may describe him as a little boring (he’s not, obviously). I’d say that this is where he’s at a good 80% of the time.
For example, where a character like Han may use more slang or be more relaxed with the way he says things, Luke straightens it up more. Han may say something like: “Ah, it’ll be fine. Lemme talk to ‘em,” and Luke would probably say: “It’ll be alright. Let me speak with them.”)
Watching ROTJ and paying attention to his mannerisms and word choices, as well as his cadence helps a lot. Oddly enough watching his cutscenes in the Battlefront 2 EA campaign gives a really good example of how he speaks and acts as well. Outside of visual media, the EU books are good too. Timothy Zahn absolutely nails Luke’s character and dialogue, so reading the Thrawn Trilogy was a goldmine of Jedi Luke dialogue examples.
Keep in mind though that this is still Luke, and Luke at his heart is a bit of a goober. Kind of a little shit, too. Don’t be afraid to let him be funny and a little cocky if the situation calls for it. If he’s not doing serious business, if he’s around just his friends, he’ll relax a little more. He knows when he can/should turn off his Jedi mellow-ness. I’ve noticed that he will sometimes match the energy of those around him too.
Can’t talk about writing Luke without covering instances where he maybe loses his cool or gets upset. He can and will snap at people, but it’s important to note that he doesn’t resort to petty insults or swearing. Luke very rarely swears in the books and comics, and the worst we ever hear from him is like… “damn” or, when he got super fed up with Dr Aphra in one of the comics, “stay the hell away from my friends.” I really don’t think “fuck” is in his vocabulary. If things are really bad, he may let a “shit” slip under his breath but that is a rare occurrence. I like to headcanon that if he does swear more harshly he does it in Huttese, and only in extreme cases.
Keep in mind that this is all just how I write him and this is my interpretation of him. Everyone will do it differently. Like I don’t write him as someone who swears, but someone else may be like “let this man say fuck!” and both are totally fine.

hmm, let me see!
sometimes it helps to revisit the source! rewatch some parts of whatever film your fic is set closest to—this can help you get a feel for the specific rhythm of star wars dialogue and give you a refresher on where luke is in his journey. you could also seek inspiration in comics or novels, though not all authors write luke the same way; use discretion. (if you take this route, try asking around to see which works are considered truest to his character)
you can also imagine how mark might say your dialogue and decide if it sounds “right.” of course, whatever “right” means is up to you, but i’ve found this method can be useful in paring down awkward sentences/paragraphs
seek out a beta reader, particularly someone who’s familiar with star wars and luke. a fresh pair of eyes can often spot problem areas we the authors can’t, and a good beta will be honest with you on areas that might need improvement
don’t overthink it. really! the idea of writing dialogue for such an iconic character can be daunting, but i promise it’s not as difficult as it seems. once you have some practice, and accept it’s okay not to get it perfect every time, luke will start to come alive in your work
