Iām going to level with you. I have listened to The Devil Went Down to Georgia for most of my life. We were a country music household, this was a staple of my childhood along with Johnny Cash, Garth Brooks, and that one Chipmunks country album.
I have no idea what āFire on the mountain run boys run/The Devil's in the house of the rising sun/Chicken in the bread pan picking out dough/Granny does your dog bite no child noā means and at this point Iām too scared to ask.
For once I can be of assistance.
Each of the lyrics comes from an old-time hickory song for fiddles, and is a lyric from that corresponding song.
"Fire on the Mountain" --> "Fire on the Mountain, run boys run"
Fire On The Mountain - Fiddle Player POV
"The House of the Rising Sun" --> "The Devil's in the house of the rising sun"
House of the Rising Sun
"Ida Red" --> "Chicken in the bread pan peckin' out dough"
Ida Red - Bob Wills & His Texas Playboys
"Granny Will Your Dog Bite" --> "Granny does your dog bite? 'No child, no'."
FTC #149 Granny Will Your Dog Bite
And for your furthered education, The Mountain Whipporwill.
Mountain Whippoorwill (aka How Hillbilly Jim Won the Great Fiddler's Prize)
this is the key part of the song, that a lot of people miss. people have this misconception that the contest between Johnny and The Devil is about who is the better fiddle player. but it isn't. its about who is the better fiddler.
in a time before things like radios and record players, every time you heard music was because there was somebody in the room with you playing an instrument. and many, many, many social events involved dancing, which requires music. so, if you're planning any kind of gathering in the american south or appalachia, you need to find a fiddler. and the fiddler's job is to play music that everybody knows and likes and can dance to.
the mistake The Devil makes in his bet with Johnny is that he misinterprets the contest as being about technical ability, so he has this big flashy song. he plays fast and impressively with a band of demons playing unfamiliar instruments in unfamiliar rhythms. he's definitely more skilled at playing than Johnny, and thinks he has it in the bag.
but Johnny wins because the contest is about being the best fiddler. the song uses these lines mentioned above as a shorthand for saying that Johnny is playing these songs. Johnny launches into a set of the most popular songs, played well, and that's what gives him his big win. A good fiddler knows all the hits, and can read the room to know what to play next. The Devil loses because he completely fails to read the room, and doesn't know the right songs.

Imagine if you met someone who can't eat watermelon. Not that they're allergic or unable somehow, but they just haven't figured out how to do that. So you're like "what the hell do you mean? it works just like eating anything else, you open your mouth, sink your teeth in, take a bite and chew. If you can bite, chew and swallow, you should be able to eat a watermelon."
And they agree that yes, they do know how to eat, in theory. The problem is the watermelon. Surely, if they figured out where to start, they'd figure out how to do it, but they have no clue how to get started with it.
This goes back and forth. No, it's not an emotional issue, they're not afraid of the watermelon. They can eat any other fruit, other sweet things, and other watery things ("it's watery?" they ask you). Is it the colour? Do they have a problem eating things that are green on the outside and red on the inside?
"It's red on the inside?"
Wait, they've never seen the inside? At this point you have to ask them how, exactly, they eat the watermelon. So to demonstrate, they take a whole, round, uncut watermelon, and try to bite straight into it. Even if they could bite through the crust, there's no way to get human jaws around it.
"Oh, you're supposed to cut it first. You cut the crust open and only chew through the insides."
And they had no idea. All their life this person has had no idea how to eat a watermelon, despite of being told again and again and again that it's easy, it's ridiculous to struggle with something so simple, there's no way that someone just can't eat a watermelon, how can you even mange to be bad at something as fucking simple as eating watermelon.
If someone can't do something after being repeatedly told to "just do it", there might be some key component missing that one side has no idea about, and the other side assumed was so obvious it goes without mention.
Yep.
https://drmaciver.substack.com/p/how-to-do-everythingĀ had a nice list of additional examples like this, with (non-)obvious major insights with regard to opening stitched bags, cleaning your bathroom floor, using a search engine, catching a ball, pinging somebody, proving a theorem, playing sudoku, passing asĀ ānormalā, improving your writing, generating novel ideas, and solving your problem.
If youād asked me six months ago how to get better at something, Iād probably have pointed you to how to do hard things. I still think this is a good approach and you should do it, but I now think itās the wrong starting point and Iāve been undervaluing small insights. [...]
I think my revised belief is that if you are stuck at how to get better at something, spend a little while assuming thereās just some trick to it youāve missed. You can try to generate the trick yourself, but itās probably easier to learn it by observing someone else being good at the thing, asking them some questions, and seeing if you have any lightbulb moment.
My fiance played the clarinet when he was in school. When he was first learning to play, he rented an instrument from the school to learn on. He was the last chair clarinet, had been for years, because he could not make notes that required the register key. For years, they kept making him do embrature exercises and he started to get a few notes, with lots of effort. Eventually he had to get private lessons to stay in band.
Every time he tells me this story, his frustration by this point in the story, years later, is evident. He still sounds frustrated by it, despite all the time that passed. Teachers had been giving him crap for years because he hadn't been making much progress with the instrument.
When he got to the private instructor, she acknowledged his frustration, and asked him to try to play for her. He did, and she saw all he was doing. She then did something no one else had done before. She asked him to put his mouthpiece on a different clarinet and try to play the same notes. Like magic, it worked. She looked at the clarinet he had been using and found that the school's clarinet needed it's pads replaced.
He went from last chair to first chair nearly overnight, having been taught far more techniques than typically taught at that age just to overcome the broken instrument preventing him from making noise.
Sometimes you don't need to brute force a problem. Sometimes your clarinet is just broken.
Not quite sure why the clarinet addition got me crying, but here you go people: just in case, let's get you some new pads.

glad they added new maps to baseball

im so sorry that you're doomed by the narrative but i really need you to answer my message on Microsoft Teams
When you meet Edward Elric he gives off the impression that he's the short-tempered hot-headed "violence is the answer to all life's questions" kind of protagonist, and it's in fact incredible character craft that he's actually the character who ends the series with a negative-3 kill count.
people killed: 0
direct orders of "you really really need to kill this guy" ignored: 1
ongoing murders being committed by Ed's own friends/colleagues that Ed got in the way of to specifically stop that murder from happening: 2
God's worst soldier Edward Elric. Showed up as the youngest member of the Amestrian army, took millions of dollars from them, never followed a single order, helped dismantle their fascist regime, left with a lower kill count than he arrived with, then fucked off to go be a house-husband. Character of all time.

hey real quick can anybody help me find this image that Iāve seen before here on tumblr. it looks like this
the button doesnāt necessarily sayĀ āElucidate the Raptureā but it does say something thatās kind of lengthy and has religious connotations. the woman pushing the button has an expression of indescribable smugness. there might be other buttons on the machine (?) she is pressing.
FOUND IT
Oh this is only the first image in the Eschatron 9000 Series
and the finale, because of the Tumblr image limit
thanks this is part of an even grander incomprehensibleness than I could have expected
I cannot believe that this is a website where you can ask āhey i think i saw a weird image onceā and put a bad stick figure drawing of it and someone will be like āoh yeah thatās the first installment of a 12-part post-ironic apocalypse fever dream photoshop seriesā and just hand you a dozen of the most unhinged images youāve ever seen in your life, that still have a better three act structure than most modern cinema
I dont think thats the whole photosetā¦. I found one more
But from what i can gather thats Crystal Thierry, also known as page73girl. Who seems to have been a model for the now defunct biggestletdown.comā¦
But i have no idea when the eschatron 9000 pictures were made or for that matter the original photos that were used to make it
this is far more than ārandom person in 2005ish creates surreal visual narrativeā - letās go deeper down the rabbit hole, shall we?
toĀ Immanentize the EschatonĀ means to bring about utopian conditions and create heaven on Earth
the phrase is first cited in the Discordian religious text, Principia Discordia (1963), for whom Discord (aka Eris) is goddess:
the first line ofĀ Robert Anton WilsonĀ andĀ Robert Sheaās 1975Ā The Illuminatus! trilogy: āIt was the year when they finally immanentized the Eschaton.ā
in Frederik Pohlās The Eschaton Sequence (1997 - 1999), the human race is caught up in a galactic war between two alien races attempting to immanentize the eschaton
inĀ Ken Macleod'sĀ The Stone Canal (1997), one of the chapters is āAnother crack at Immanentising the Eschatonā
Crystal Thierryās (aka the modern Discordia / Eris) narrative lives in esteemed company
hereās what the warning in the image says btw because i wanted to read it but it was too blurry so i had to spend several minutes hunting for a version with better resolution, so Iām posting it here so nobody else has to make that same journey
āDO NOT OPERATE THE ESCHATRON 9000 UNLESS YOUāRE REALLY, REALLY SERIOUS ABOUT DESTROYING THE WORLDā
also just noticed the labels on the dials on the left side of the deviceās control panel:
āMAYHEMā and āDESTRUCTIONā are both turned all the way up
As they should be. Canāt make paradise without scrambling a few universes.
Official ominous sign(s)
You definitely donāt get content like this on other webbed sites and apps
im so sick of unnecessary dinner scenes in movies š” every fucking movie they just want to titillate you with some food because they think youāre a dumb animal who just wants to see mashed potatoes bouncing. if its an IMPORTANT dinner scene where they explain lore then whatever i understand. but they shove useless meals into every movie these days and its disgusting

i found the weirdest yt channel like its not even really weird but im just???
Ā but anyway some girl has spend years animating a show with her furry ocs set in a western universe with hints of?? native american and aztec mythology as well as like bits of others but not really cause theres a rabbit who wears a fuckin sailor outfit and i cant follow the plot at all and theres a crane called ichabod bc subtleĀ
its fucking me up bc theres so much effort in it but its so haphazardĀ
i actually love this
Okay, but for this to be animated by one person is fucking AMAZINGĀ because we have indie animated projects started and shattered by full teams that donāt even have this much flow.
Youtube is weird because sometimes you find amazing art projects buried in itās annuals that defy explanation due to their quality and the fact they never went viral.
To watch
iāve been binging this and iām on episode 24 and really i find the story pretty interesting and not really that difficult to follow??? my only concern is how all the human children except for like Charles inexplicably look like full-grown adults instead of like actual children
Iāve been a fan of No Evil for a little over a year, and I really canāt recommend it enough! Episodes 1-9 are mostly just animation tests and shorts to get an idea of the characters (though episode 2 and 7 are important to understand the backstory and episode 8 and 9 set up two major conflicts throughout the rest of the series).
Thereās a lot of exposition in episode 10 which can be hard to follow on a first watch but is really rewarding when you go back to re-watch everything. Also, the animation is freakin gorgeous now and then, just
SHAPESHIFTING
MAGIC
BEAUTIFUL CHARACTERS
FULLY ANIMATED ASL
PERFECT REACTION GIFS
Also they arrange and record a lot of the music in the show all on their own which is frankly amazing https://youtu.be/L6SZgUVTb4Q
No Evil is so good, you really get lost in the magic of the world and are soon invested in the characters. The designs are so cool and the songs are choice.
If you want help getting into the show on YouTube (because the first few episodes are kinda vague and arent explained till later) you can read the comic that takes places before the show
I highly recommend this one, these people put together an amazing story animating at home and recording in their closets and it deserves as much love in response as was put into its creation
Okay I literally just finished binge watching all there episodes and this is probably the most intriguing show Iāve watched in a while. Not to mention the fabulous character designs as well
