The Will Of One || Keisha || Re: Everyone
Keisha listens in silence from her spot on the floor. Over time, as things are explained, the shaking in her legs stops enough for her to rise to her feet. She leans on the podium for support, closing her eyes for a few short moments. That was a whole lot to take in. To her credit though, she doesnât seem terribly phased by the Volitionsâ outburst. In fact, she seems to strengthen in the face of it. Her lips purse together and she stands up straighter.
âSo weâre lookinâ at a bunch oâ magical bullshit then.â
Keisha comments dryly, drumming her fingers on the top of the podium.
âIf weâre talkinâ âbout virtues, m'pretty sure thoseâre usually things like patience, courage, wisdom, generosity anâ the like, right? Takinâ away self-control oâ anythinâ elseâŚyer rippinâ away somethinâ that makes 'em human. Anâ the thought oâ that happeninâ t'anyone else is frankly disgustinâ t'me. I mean, fuck, e'en when Kleis went all thundaga on Oken anâ zapped the asshole outta him there was just somethinâ wrong 'bout him. It wasnât him without that anâ it was goddamn unnerving. Harumi is right. If yer pullinâ whatâs good from either oâ âem, itâs just gonna do more damage.â
She shakes her head, her lip curling. Keisha remembers all too well the damage that lack of restraint had done.
âI gotta disagree with the whole âhauntinââ thing though. Mâsure theyâve got better shit tâdo than float âround after the two oâ ya like yer Ebenezer Scrooge. Just kinda seems inconvenient fer eâerybody anâ I gotta feelinâ this ainât exactly somethinâ yer gonna go forgettinâ anytime soon.â
She shrugs. That totally wasnât the part she should have been focusing on. Keisha goes quiet again for a few moments, thinking before she shifts her weight to one hip, crossing her arms across her chest. She pivots to turn and look back with a bit of a smile towards the spectre behind her: the Merciful.
âA lil ways back, I came t'ya askinâ fer mercy fer Hikaru. I said Iâd bet m'life that he regrets his part in all oâ this anâ I ainât wrong. Ya told me he needed tâask fer redemption on his own anâ Iâll bâfucked if that ainât what he just did. Ya also told me ta trust m'intuition, so thatâs what m'doinâ. Anâ itâs tellinâ me that whate'er the hell yer all planninâ ainât right.â
With that, she turns back to address the rest of the Volitions. The look in her eyes is considerably harder now.
âAfter all, yâainât blameless in this neither. Alaric mighta commanded ya tâdo some shit, but seeinâ whatâre supposed tâbe the Hope oâ Humanity not only neglect tâhelp stop a group oâ teenagers from beinâ magically tortured but also condemn others tâmore sufferinâ donât exactly inspire a girl with much confidence. Ya wanna punish Harumi anâ Hikaru fer lyinâ anâ beinâ naive? How âboutcha take a good look at yerselves. What has yer complacency anâ cowardice gotten us?!â
She grits her teeth, needing to pause to calm herself down. Yelling out her anger at the ones sheâs supposed to be bringing to their side isnât going to help. She takes a few deep breaths and something occurs to her.
âBeen on mâown long ânough tânot really give two shits âbout what the rest oâ humanity wants, but if ya say theyâre watchinâ all oâ thisâŚâ
Keisha coughs into her fist, clearing her throat before standing up straighter. Sheâs not quite sure how to do this but sheâs going to try. She fixes her gaze straight ahead, not really looking at anyone in particular across the room as she starts to speak.
(~~Background music here!!!~~)
âHowdy folks, this is yer Capt'n speakinâ! M'name is Keisha Deering, though I somehow got the feelinâ y'all know that already. I got a few things Iâd like tâsay ta the lot oâ ya.â
Sheâs just speaking to thin air. Has Keisha finally lost it? She looks awfully determined thoughâŚ
âHumanity is callinâ fer action? Fine. Congrats folks, none oâ yaâre bystanders. Mâcallinâ yâall out! Y'allâre a part oâ this now. When it comes down ta it, yer just as big oâ an influence on these folks as much as anyone else. Ya got a say in the future anâ that makes ya responsible fer what happens next. I believe in Harumi anâ Hikaru. Theyâve been manipulated anâ lied ta anâ made their share oâ mistakes, but theyâre both good people anâ deserve a second chance. I know Iâve already forgiven âem, but tâbe honest, they need yours more than just mine. Alaric used âem fer his own intentions, fuelinâ a death game from behind the scenes t'quench a rebellion where none shoulda eâer happened, when all we wanted was fer our voices tâbe heard. I donât want war. I want the chaos anâ the painâ anâ the sufferinâ tâstop. Not just fer me, but fer eâeryone here.â
Keishaâs voice shakes briefly. God she hopes this works. She squares her shoulders and continues.
âLivinâ on with their guilt, always tryinâ t'make it right but knowinâ that they ne'er willâŚainât that punishment 'nough already? Fer fucks sakeâŚaddinâ t'all the sufferinâ thatâs already been dealt is just gonna bring more! This cycle oâ violence has gotta end. After seeinâ eâerythinâ thatâs happened here, dâya honestly think that handinâ out more pain is gonna help solve anythinâ? Punishinâ âem ainât gonna turn back time. It ainât gonna bring the dead back tâlife oâ fix the consequences oâ what theyâve done. At this point, any penance ya inflict onâ em is just gonna be like beatinâ a dead horse. Instead, we need tâstand tâgether so somethinâ like this neâer happens again. Ya gotta take a look at yerselves, at the folks âround ya anâ ask âwouldâve I done somethinâ different?â In the face oâ fearinâ fer yer life anâ the lives oâ yer family, would yaâve stood up? Itâs real easy tâsay thatcha would. Itâs real damn easy tâassure yerself thatcha got the courage tâdo whatâs right, but the truth is that it ainât easy. Standinâ up fer what ya think is right ainât easy. Sayinâ what ya really want ainât easy. Tellinâ the truth ainât easy. Admitting yer wrong anâ beinâ willinâ tâaccept penance fer it ainât easy. They couldnât do it before but theyâre both doinâ it now anâ I know theyâre both goinâ ta take the steps tâdo what needs tâbe done from now on.â
Keisha smiles at Hikaru and Harumi. Theyâve come a long way from how she knew them at the start. Sheâs so proud of them both.
âThey may be willinâ tâaccept punishment, but that donât mean they should get it. Instead oâ dragginâ this sufferinâ onâŚplease. Just let us finally end it anâ find peace.â
