Some Things That I've Made

It’s called: “they say no two are alike…”

I made this thing a couple of months ago and only just got round to taking a decent picture.

I made a stretchy maxi-skirt!  I used black 4-way stretch fabric, and the side panels are from cut up leggings that were bought a size too small.

Schematic for the Penrose Strings thing that I made.  It's compared to the finished piece on the right.  I took the central bit of a Penrose tiling made from two rhombi.  The matching rules, which determine which tiles go next to each other is shown as the coloured lines.  I translated this into a string art thing.

When I was a teenager, one of my dreams was to become a composer for video games and films.  I realised recently that even though I may not get to do that since I am currently following my other dreams, I can still make the kind of music I’d like to compose in that context.

So this is my first attempt, which is very heavily influenced by Sam Hulick and Jack Wall’s soundtrack to the Mass Effect video games.  In fact, it is an emulation of Uncharted Worlds by Hulick.

Part of a collection of string art that I made over christmas to be given as presents.  This design is based on the mathematical design called Penrose Tiling.  It’s a tiling pattern that can be continued to infinity, but doesn’t have translational symmetry, only 5-fold rotational symmetry around the central point (pentagonal symmetry).  If you ‘pick up’ the design and move it sideways in some direction, it will never overlap and match up exactly.  This type of lattice structure is seen in nature in the form of quasicrystals.’

Rainbow fingernails and black thumbnails.

I made some earrings with characters from the World of Goo indie game (which is awesome, btw).

Part of a collection of string art that I made over christmas to be given as presents.  This colourful rainbow was made for my sister.

I only included one type of purple, as I didn't have thread that had colours which showed the distinction between indigo and violet well enough.  I included cyan/turquoise as that's one of my sister's favourite colours, and the jump between the green and blue would have otherwise been too sharp.
