I really love Mary & Matthew but I’m so tempted to try and write a post S3 story of her building a strong friendship with a male character (possibly original), who’s there through everything but doesn’t try to pressure her into remarrying, supports her as she grows into the role of agent, understands that she’ll never love him the same way she loves Matthew, willing to accept that she might never love him in a romantic way but doesn’t leave her because of it. With Mary eventually realising that she can still love someone in a romantic way.
The conflict would come from those outside of their friendship either trying to force a relationship or by deeming their friendship inappropriate…
I might actually have to try and write this. The research will be intense.
