The Astruc of Competitions
With every competition comes the unspoken standard that every cheerleader has to live up to. Although no one ever tells you about, after you mess up a few times you get the feel for what to do, and what not to do. So here's a few of the "Unspoken Rules of Competition". The first is performing under the weather. Cheerleaders aren't supposed to get sick, we are supposed to be in peak mental and physical condition at all times-- at least that's what the coaches expect. But there are those few times when the worst of the worst illnesses can hit you right before the weekend of the competition. These are the worst times to be sick, your team expects you to be in tip-top shape-- so not sick. So when you hit the floor with your team you suck it up, you pretend that you've never been sick... ever. You push through, no complaining and you die backstage after you've hit your routine. Second "Unspoken Rule" of competitions, is don't bad mouth your competition around the arena. At any moment a person, parent, or coach from that or any program can overhear you. This gives you, your team, and your gym a terrible wrap. Leave the trash talk for team warm-ups and pumping up your team before you go on. It's honestly so tacky to overhear a team trash talking another, and every cheerleader is better than that. Lastly, getting ready is strictly a team room or before the competition thing. At almost every competition my gym has attended there can be up to 10 girls getting ready in the bathroom, and it is not okay. No one likes going into a public restroom and having no space to wash your hands afterwards. Most teams prefer to let their cheerleaders get ready in the team meeting room, or before they even arrive at the competition. It makes the gym as a whole look more well put together when their cheerleaders aren't rushing last minute to get ready. If you follow these three unspoken rules of cheer, I promise you will have a better time as an athlete and a member of your gym.
