Cruel Summer might be the darkest song on the album (which despite everyone saying so, shows me why she didn’t want to release it as the lead single). especially the second verse, the fact that she says “i’m not dying” is just so telling. i didn’t even realize the lyric referenced dying until this moment. she really was constantly panicking, and thought she had nothing left to lose. i can’t imagine the emotional torment of falling so deeply for someone at the same time as being in the lowest point in your life.
