Vincent Van Gogh, in the last year of his life, was taken to a hospital where all his paints and brushes were taken away. He imploringly wrote to his brother to send him these necessary things. In lieu of getting canvases in time he began to paint on available bedsheets he would find. One image, "Wild Vegetation" was never found after his death. It was thought to have been thrown away. Decades later it was discovered as having been painted over. The only reason they discovered it was from the white paint that his brother had mistakenly sent. As children flush with curiosity and boundless creativity, we lived in a world of unbridled imagination. The most memorable was a tale about a vengeful plant that lurked in unsuspecting areas of our forest wonderland. The moment your back was turned it would chase you through the trees and attempt to infect your brain with its hidden tentacles full of poison. Sanctuary could be found by leaping over the creeks because they hadn't yet developed the ability to cross over water. It was sent from an alien race yet undiscovered that was scouting their next location. We were the only hope for saving Earth from a fate worse than even we could imagine. Rope ladders were built, research stations plotted out, exit strategies in case of invasion, and campsites were constructed anew weekly as the plants would infiltrate our locations and plans. I don't recall the demise of that escapade but clearly we weren't annihilated. The world was once again unknowingly saved by a rag tag bunch of kids spending too many hours outside. I found these while wandering through the Harvard Museum of Natural History. I have never known what these plants were because I didn't know how to look them up even with the Google.
