I don’t think people get art. I feel like people think art is something created by a tortured soul and you have to go out of your way to go to an art gallery and you have some kind of emotional response and that’s art.

But that’s bullshit

You walk into a grocery store and you’re surrounded by art. Who do you think designs the packages? Fucking artists. Who do you think designed your house? Your bedsheets? Your car? Artists.

Art is a necessity. It’s everywhere, we wear it, we talk about it, we live in it. It’s everywhere. Every color, negative space, font, placement, material, you come into contact with an artist had a hand in that. TV, movies, music, graphics, It’s everywhere, it’s everything

ok so in a way that is true but

Packages are not made by artists, they are made by designers. Same goes for posters, car designs, magazine layouts, fonts, websites and many other things. Houses are designed by architects and while any game requires some conceptual art, it also involves a lot of coding and programming.

And if you want to think of those things as art then that’s your choice, but they’re not art. Design is something entirely different. Architecture is different. Coding and programming are different.

I get where you’re coming from and what’s your point, but as someone who studied fine arts, design, programming and coding, I just wanted to point out they’re not exactly what most people would call ‘art’.

This has 47k notes, other people have commented saying this exact thing, several times, or saying the complete opposite, several times. Some designers consider themselves artists, some do not. As someone who has made logos, posters, website layouts, I consider it art. It’s fine if you don’t. It’s a big never ending debate ~

I mean I know most people don’t consider comic books art, or tattooing art, or video game graphics art, but to me that’s art.

I honestly don’t really care what most people see as art.

…except design IS AN ART DEGREE, so that one person’s response is full of shit because art classes/degrees are still involved in everything they just claimed wasn’t. Architects (even though it’s somewhat an engineering degree) STILL HAVE TO INCORPORATE ART INTO WHAT THEY DO. EVERYTHING LISTED IS ART RELATED AND IS CONSIDERED ART. IT’S ALL ART. Stop fucking devaluing the importance of art and art degrees, fullten is RIGHT on all of these and it’s NOT just “not exactly what most people would call “art”“ BECAUSE IT’S. STILL. ART. Stop trying to conform your narrow views on art to the rest of us and therefore insulting the people who create everything we use.

The two (design/art) definitely overlap. There are so many people at my school that switch from illustration/fine art to other degree programs, such as graphic design. Heck, I know a guy who’s in illustration and trying to get into graphics right now. They undoubtedly overlap.
