i promise im trying to work through all the asks you guys have sent me. my job has just been so hectic this week and I donât know when itâs going to calm down.
hiiii!!!! i saw your post on needing to write under the jack abbot tag and i was wondering if you could write jack abbot x adhd and sleepy partner!reader whoâs always on the move and is always on a swivel so he gets worried one day when they dont pick up the daily phone call so he panics just to find out theyâre okay?? (very ooc imo but i love this)
MISSED CALL âËâšâ
jack abbot x adhd/sleepy!reader
warnings/tags: no description of reader, domestic fluff, established relationship, fluff with the tiniest bit of angst, possibly ooc jack abbot, forgetful reader, protective jack
synopsis: jack knows all your habits by heart â your forgotten phone, your accidental naps, your endless curiosity. so when you don't answer your daily call, he can't help but wonder if this time is different.
word count: 1.1k
jack learnt very early on that loving you meant accepting that there was very little about you that remained still. from your thoughts, your seven half-finished craft projects scattered around the apartment, the fact that you could actively lose your keys while they were in your hands.
you lived your life in a state of perpetual motion.
but even you had your moments of stillness. for every day that you buzzed around with enough energy to last three lifetimes, there were times where your body seemed to remember all at once how tiring existing could be.
you'd tell jack you'd lay down for just 20 minutes, and he would find you two hours later sprawled across the top of the duvet â missing a sock, a book laying forgotten beside you. you were the most peaceful in those moments.
jack never had the heart to wake you. he'd simply drape a blanket over your sleeping form before rescuing your phone from wherever you'd abandoned it, plugging it into the charger before it had the chance to die.
you'd wake up some hours later, cocooned in a blanket you didn't remember wrapping yourself in, your book back on your nightstand with your page marked, and your phone alive and charging.
"you know" jack would say without looking up from whatever medical journal he was reading, "chargers only work if you actually plug your phone into them".
you'd frown at him, still blinking sleep from your eyes.
"is that how they work?"
he'd hum his response.
"good thing you have me around, otherwise you'd be walking around all day without any way of falling down your wikipedia rabbit holes".
"lucky me", you sleepily grin at him.
the calls at the beginning of his shift had started off sporadically when your relationship was still new. sometimes he'd call to remind you to eat, other times just to hear your voice before the chaos of the emergency department swallowed him whole. you usually called with little updates about whatever new thing had captured your attention that week.
over time, the calls became an unspoken way for the both of you to make sure the other was okay. they became a ritual; one final moment of normality before jack disappeared behind the ambulance bay doors for the next twelve hours.
if you couldn't catch him before he clocked in, he'd call the moment he found five spare minutes between patients. if it was a really hectic shift, you'd leave him a voice message before you went to bed, promising to catch up in the morning.
and no matter how unpredictable your days were, one of you always found a way to keep in touch.
until tonight.
jack was on his third attempt of calling you, the phone still ringing. but he wasn't worried, not yet. you could've misplaced your phone again, you could have some music playing too loudly to hear the ringing, or maybe you were busy watering the plants again.
people missed phone calls all the time.
he ended the call before it went to voicemail, making a mental note to try again later when he had a break â if you hadn't called him back before then.
the break never came. twenty minutes later EMS rolled in with two men who'd turned a disagreement over a football match into a bar fight. one with a broken nose, the other with a bottle-shaped laceration across his forehead.
then came an elderly woman in respiratory distress.
a teenager with a dislocated shoulder.
a child who'd swallowed a coin.
the emergency department moved the way it always did: relentlessly. by the time jack finally scrubbed the dried blood from his hands and reached for his phone, nearly 4 hours had disappeared.
he expected to see your name, a missed call, maybe a text.
sorry!! accidentally fell asleep lol.
instead... nothing. his lock screen stared back at him, stubbornly empty. the familiar calm he'd carried all evening gave way to something more restless.
he called again. straight to voicemail.
jack frowned. phone's dead, he thought automatically. it was the most logical explanation. it should've been enough to put his mind at ease, but it wasn't.
he spent the rest of his shift with his body and mind in two different places. physically he was exactly where he needed to be â suturing lacerations, reading x-rays, reassuring anxious families, signing discharge papers. mentally though, he couldn't stop searching for the reason for your silence.
there had to be one.
you'd misplaced your phone before. forgotten it in the bathroom, left it buried beneath a pile of laundry, abandoned it somewhere in the apartment while your attention drifted to something else. you'd fallen asleep in the middle of the afternoon more times than he could count, usually waking hours later with no memory of closing your eyes in the first place.
any one of those explanations should've been enough, so why couldn't he believe them?
jack spent every spare moment checking his phone, hoping to see your name lighting up the screen. a missed call. a text. anything.
there was never anything.
by the end of his shift, jack was exhausted. he felt it everywhere.
in the ache behind his eyes after hours of fluorescent lights, in the stiffness settling between his shoulders, in the dull irritation where his prosthetic rubbed against his skin after twelve hours on his feet.
on any other day, he'd have driven home already thinking about a hot shower and collapsing into bed beside you.
tonight, there was only one thing on his mind.
he drove home as fast as the speed limit allowed, tapping restless fingers against the steering wheel every time he was forced to stop at another red light. when he finally pulled into the driveway, your car was exactly where it should've been.
relief loosened something in his chest. but only for a moment, because he still didn't know if you were okay.
the house was dark when he stepped inside.
"honey?"
silence.
he spotted your phone almost immediately, abandoned on the kitchen counter exactly where you'd left it.
he pressed the power button, nothing.
"...of course."
the tension in his shoulders eased just enough for him to breathe.it was dead, he'd been right. all the worst case scenarios that had been plaguing him for the entire shift hadn't come true.
he rounded the corner into the living room, and there you were.
curled up on the sofa beneath far too many blankets, one leg dangling over the armrest, your book lying open across your chest exactly where sleep had claimed you. the television was still playing quietly to an audience of no one.
jack stood there for a long moment.
he hadn't realised how tightly he'd been holding himself together until he felt everything finally unwind.
you were okay, that's all that mattered.
he bent down and placed a gentle kiss to your forehead before turning off the tv and grabbing your phone from the kitchen. he plugged it into the charger with the familiarity of someone who'd done it a hundred times before.
warnings/tags: situationship final boss, implied age gap, angst, hurt/no comfort, injured abbot, kinda mean abbot, unrequited feelings, probably ooc abbot, MDNI
word count: 1k
you knew you were foolish to get involved with an attending you worked with, even if you weren't working directly under him on nights.
everything about it felt like a heartbreak waiting to happen â the secrecy, the stolen moments, the way he never acknowledged you unless it was in the privacy of his apartment or his car.
but you told yourself it was enough. you could learn to live with it. if you couldn't have all of jack, you would greedily indulge in whatever small piece of his heart he was willing to give.
at first the sneaking around made you feel like a teenager again.
there was something so thrilling about catching his eye across the emergency department during shift changes, pretending not to know why the corner of his mouth twitched into the smallest smile before he focussed back in on whatever conversation he was having with robby. sometimes if you were covering a night shift, you'd hang back at the end, making small talk with ellis or shen while you waited for jack to text you a simple ok. you'd politely excuse yourself before climbing into the passenger seat of his black truck that he'd parked around the corner.
for an hour or two, you could pretend. pretend that the way jack looked at you behind closed doors meant he felt the same way as you, that he just couldn't bring himself to say it aloud. each time he'd tell you "this is the last time" in that rough voice of his, you'd roll your eyes â because it never was the last time.
somewhere along the line, it stopped being exciting.
it wasn't one specific moment that did you in. it was countless little ones. jack abbot was a man of gestures; the way he'd stand near you as he oversaw procedures, how he'd remember little things you mentioned in passing.
you tried to be cool about it, but you were weak. somewhere in those quiet gestures you'd made the mistake of falling for him.
by the day he had rushed into the ED with his swat team, you were already too far gone to pretend what you felt for him wasn't love.
you had noticed the stiffness in his shoulder immediately, not enough for anyone else to notice it. enough for you. but you didn't call it out, you waited. jack hated being fussed over, the last thing he needed was you questioning him in front of half the department.
after his friend was wheeled up to the OR, you found jack alone in trauma three struggling to take off his tactical vest.
"what happened to your shoulder"
he didn't even look up.
"nothing"
"just let me take a look"
you stepped closer tentatively, as if approaching a startled deer, like one wrong move could send him scattering away.
"jack"
his jaw tightened, finally having gotten off the vest and now tackled with the task of removing his shirt.
without thinking, you reach for the shears on the cabinet beside you.
"hold still", you murmured, already slipping the shears beneath the torn fabric. "i'll grab you a clean shirt from your locker in a second."
"it's just a graze"
you huff at his dismissive tone, "it still needs cleaning."
as you cut the final piece of fabric his shirt falls away. removing it carefully, you get a look at the damage.
relief washes over you. it's only a graze â not too deep. thank God.
you reach for a pack of saline wipes.
"this is going to sting a little.
the first touch makes him flinch a little, you barely restrain yourself from placing a soothing touch to his uninjured shoulder.
you catch his eyes flickering behind you to get a look at the busy trauma bay. you hear voices drift past. then he looks back at you.
"would you stop fussing over me?"
you blink at him.
"i'm only cleaning it."
"you always this persistent with your patients?" he asks with his staple smirk.
"only the stubborn ones."
you finish cleaning up the wound, patching it up with some gauze, your fingers lingering for just a second longer than necessary. clearing your throat, you turn away throw away the wipes you used, missing the way jack's eyes drift over to the corridor again.
everyone was too busy to pay either of you any attention.
but they could. they could look in and see the way you hovered over him, how familiar your hands had become with his body. and jack had put in so many precautions with you to make sure it would never happen.
when you turn back to jack, his expression has hardened. a look in his eyes you can't quite place, one that makes your heart race with nerves.
"you can't keep doing this."
"doing what?"
"looking after me like..." he scrubs a hand over his face, searching for a different way to say it.
he can't find one.
"...like you're my wife."
you don't speak yet. you can't. you stand there processing his words, knowing they don't come from a place of malice, but it doesn't make them hurt any less.
"you're all set," you whisper, your voice coming out steadier than expected
"try not to lift anything too heavy for a day or two."
it's easier to sound like his doctor than whatever else you were.
jack opens his mouth â whether to apologise or to explain, you'll never know. you don't give him the chance.
"i'll see you around, dr. abbot."
the title tasted foreign after months of him being just jack.
you walk back into the noise of the emergency department without looking over your shoulder. you'd always known this was how it would end, with single sentence that finally forced you to see the relationship for what it had always been.
he would never love you the way you loved him.
the cruelest part was that tomorrow, if his name lit up your phone after another late shift with a simple come over, you already knew what your answer would be.
you hated yourself for it.
but loving jack abbot had never made you stronger.

munch!pope cody who comes home from a job, wound tight from stress and simmering anger, crawling into bed with you, looking for a release.
you're half-asleep as he presses soft kisses all along your neck, trailing lower as he wordlessly spreads your legs open. he nips away at your inner thighs, leaving little bruises and bite marks as you groggily squirm under his hold.
he pulls your hips closer, slinging you legs over his shoulders as he dives in. sloppily making out with your cunt, he leaves a string of spit as he pulls away for just a second to see the blissed-out expression on your face. your hand makes its way into his curls, guiding his face back to your centre as you grind up into his mouth.
you let out a soft moan, barely audible, but pope feels it travel all the way to his cock, leaving him pathetically humping the bed for some friction as he eats you out. desperate to hear those sounds again, he slips a thick finger into you, curling upwards just right to hear to moan his name. he laps at your clit more aggressively, needing you to cum all over his mouth.
when you finally finish, wracked with broken moans and shaking legs, you offer to return the favour. but there's no need. pope got all the pleasure he needed making you feel good â the wet spot on his jeans is the proof

It snows the day after Christmas, and the day after that, and the day after that.Â
âDo you think it will ever stop snowing?â You ask Bob as you slide his curtains closed. Outside the snow seems endless, blanketing everything in a layer of blinding white.Â
âI donât mind, it means we get to stay inside. Keep each other warm,â he responds as you lay on your stomach next to him and open up his Twitter. After spending the past three days pleading with you to just have a look at what people were saying, Bob had finally managed to get you to do it. Heâs tweeted out a short clip and pinned it to his profile.Â
@goldenboy: got a friend of mine to help with this yearâs Christmas video :) something extra special to thank you all for getting me into the top 5% of creators. link in bio! Happy holidays everyone!
âYou didnât tell me you were in the top 5%!â you yell, hand stretching out to whack at him. âI wouldâve got you cake or something.â
âI didnât wanna brag. Why do you and Yelena hit so hard, you donât even work out,â he complains rubbing at the spot on his chest where you hit him.Â
âI work out,â you mumble, scrolling down into the comments. You ignore his scoff. âIf youâre top 5% that must mean youâre making bank? Why on earth do you still want to have a roommate?â
âI donât like being alone,â he says. âIâve tried and it just⌠wasnât good for me,â he shrugs. You donât push it, just keep scrolling through comments. Â
@jaytorres: god almighty⌠also congrats bro, youâre killing it out here.Â
âGod almighty is crazy,â you laugh. âGood to know he liked it though,â you nod. You donât need to look at Bob to know heâs rolling his eyes like heâs done every time Joaquin has come up in casual conversation.Â
âDM him, Iâm sure heâd love to tell you in detail what he liked,â he says. You just give him a light shove, continue reading the comments out loud to him.Â
@_luvrgirlsupreme: me next?Â
@donotfollowplease: when are you gonna go live again? We miss your livestreams!
âYou donât go live anymore?â You ask.Â
âNah, not really. Friday used to be my livestream day, but obviously Iâm busy on Fridays,â he shrugs, looking everywhere but at you.Â
âBob, you shouldâve told me you were busy on Fridays we couldâve found a different day for movies,â you complain.Â
âIâm telling you itâs fine. Iâll just find a different day to go live, or go live later. Donât touch movie night, thatâs like, sacred to me,â he says, almost sounding stern. âGo on, read some more.â
@softnsweet: what kind of friend is this?
@cutietron5000: my rose toyâs about to be sick of me!! thank you for the gift mr goldenboy!
@sportsbunny: congrats my friend :)!! Onwards and upwards!! and tell your friend she did really good too :)!! I hope you said thank you!
âAwww sheâs so sweet, tell her I said thank you. And that you were a perfect gentleman who also said thank you.â
âIâll tell her,â he smiles as you keep scrolling.Â
@user6745098767: me and who?
@bigdaddydon53876: @user6745098767 check dm, looking for someone to spoil, can send you proof Iâm real.Â
@terryrichardson99876546: do you have more videos with her? Can we see more? Does she have her own page????????????
@swagpilled101: my friend fucks me like this Iâm asking them what we are btw.Â
@goontastic: modelâs name?
   @goldenboy: @goontastic sheâs not a model, just my friend.Â
@goontastic: @goldenboy oh thatâs sad⌠well I hope we get to see her again!Â
@lovepilled: look at my Santa dawg, I need to disinfect my gifts before I open them.Â
You laugh at that one while Bob defends himself.Â
âWe werenât even in the workshop! We were in my office, thatâs separate to my workshop,â he explains, hands thrown up in exasperation. âYou know they do this under all my role-play videos? They pick them apart?â
âYou have a heckler?â You laugh. Heâs not amused, bottom lip pushed out in a pout as he watches you laugh. âIâm sorry, Iâm sorry I shouldnât laugh but you have to admit that it is a little hilarious. Just a little bit,â you giggle, imagining this same user under all the content heâs posted, pointing out the inaccuracies. âDid this person heckle you under the Creampie for Study Notes video too?â
He looks confused for a moment, brow furrowing as he thinks, and then he lights up after seemingly remembering. âFirst of all, yes you know they did, Iâll see if I can find the tweets. Second of all, you remember that video?â
âThe premise is ridiculous. Of course I remember,â you say, holding up your free hand before he can say something sly and going back to reading comments.Â
@user569886: real porn role-play is so back
@moonjunakgae: how do I get a job at Santaâs workshop???? Asking for a friend.Â
@_luvrgirlsupreme: @moonjunakgae when you find out please tell me I also want this Christmas bonus.Â
You scroll through more comments, most of the same; people asking if you had your own page, if you were going to do more with Bob. Some comments are very complimentary, and you donât know what to do with the pride that swells in your chest. Others are just a simple âthanks!â Or âgood stuff again, brother!â Which you think is quite possibly the weirdest thing to say under a video of Santa-elf role-play, but hey, who were you to judge?
âSee? All good, no oneâs gonna take you out back and shoot you or whatever you thought was going to happen to you, they love you,â Bob says, his fingers tracing little patterns on your back. You roll your eyes as you lock your phone, roll over so youâre on your back, your head resting on his arm.Â
âI know. A lot of them wanna see me again,â you smile, eyes closed.Â
âDo you want to be in another one?â He asks.Â
âMaybe. This wasnât too bad actually,â you say.Â
âWhat kind of video would you wanna do?â He asks, his free hand sliding up the inside of your thigh.Â
You close your eyes, try to focus on anything but the heat of his hand. He lets the question hang, waits for you to gather your thoughts as he continues moving his hand.Â
âI canât focus if you do that,â you sigh, but youâre disappointed when he stops, puts his hand on your knee instead. âOkay. Well most importantly no more role-play if you want me back on camera.â He seems to accept this, motions for you to continue. âI think maybe, Iâd probably like to sit on your face if you wanted,â you mumble. Itâs harder to get the words out than you think it should be.Â
âOkay, sitting on my face. I can do that for you. Off-camera too if you wanted, whenever you want,â he shrugs, âanything else?â
âI donât know, you can do pretty much anything to me, you look like youâre good at a lot,â you say, face hot. His hand is still on your knee but even that is making you squirm.Â
âAww thanks,â he flashes you a smile. âWhat about off-camera? We should probably talk about the off-camera stuff too,â he says as he moves so that heâs sitting up. You sit up too, cross your legs and face him.Â
âLike what I want from you in bed orâŚâ you trail off. Youâre not sure you want to have this conversation, to have him remind you that you are strictly friends with benefits. Itâs not really an issue, but for some reason you feel your heart tug.Â
âWhat you want this to be. I already told you this but I probably couldnât give you a real relationship,â he almost sounds sad, and just for a moment his eyes are downcast, the usual light confidence hidden beneath something else, but it comes back just as fast it went. âNot that Iâm assuming you want more from me obviously, Iâm your roommate and weâve had great sex, Iâm just you know⌠saying. If things change we have to talk to each other, because I really donât wanna lose you as a friend if we stop doing this,â he mumbles, wringing his hands.Â
You put your hands over his. âBob, you are my friend. I also donât wanna lose you as a friend. Youâve been upfront with me and thatâs really all I can ask for so donât worry about that okay?â
He nods. âSorry, Iâm really not trying to be an asshole, I just donât want us to hate each other at the end of this.â
Hearing him casually mention your arrangement ending throws you for a bit of a loop but you snap out of it, just squeeze his hands.Â
âBob, youâre literally impossible to hate. I donât think youâve done a single mean thing while youâve lived here,â you say, fixing him with a glare when he opens his mouth to argue, âIâm serious. Youâre not being an asshole by setting boundaries. Itâs okay I promise.â You squeeze his hands again and he visibly relaxes.Â
âOkay so uh, what about what you want me to do to you. Letâs talk about that,â he asks.Â
You groan. You were hoping heâd move on from that. He laughs as he pulls you into his lap while he leans against his headboard.Â
âWait, so youâll let me fuck you on camera, but you wonât tell me what you want off camera? Câmon, this has to be fun for you, tell me what you want,â he says. He slides his hands under your shirt, presses a kiss to your throat. âWhat dirty dirty things does this sweet girl want me to do to her?â he murmurs as he ghosts his lips over yours. He pulls away, leans back, but he doesnât take his hands off of you.Â
âIâm not that sweet,â you mumble, trying to ignore the dull ache starting in your core. It doesnât help that he has you sitting right over him. Or that once again, he didnât give you your underwear back last night so you were sitting there with nothing but his shorts separating you guys.Â
He laughs again. âYou need to focus. Tell me what you want besides sitting on my face, or do you need time to think about it?â
âI donât need time to think about it, itâs just I havenât done some of it before so Iâm just shy about it,â you finally admit.Â
âFair enough. Nothing to be shy about though, I guarantee you, Iâve probably been asked to do much weirder shit. I used to kick my old dealer in the balls until he came so I wouldnât have to pay for my shit. Among other things.â
You grimace. âOkay, well, there will be no ball kicking over here thank you,â you say to him. You let your hands slide round to the back of his head, play with the hair at the nape of his neck. Itâs growing long, curling at the ends. âYour hairâs longer,â you note, as you coil some of it around your fingers, pulling lightly.Â
âYeah, too lazy to get it cut,â Bob sighs out. âYou like it?â
âYeah, it suits you like this.â You card your fingers through his hair, feel him twitch beneath you.Â
âStop stalling. Tell me what you want,â he says, tone firm. He can probably feel the way youâre throbbing on top of him but you donât care, youâre well past that now.Â
âI guess, we could try the mirror sex at some point?â
You lean your forehead on his chest when his eyebrows shoot up, but he takes your chin in his fingers, tilts your head back up so youâre looking at him.Â
âStop, donât hide from me. How are we supposed to have mirror sex if you wonât even look at me when asking?âÂ
You close your eyes, then open them when you hear him tsk.Â
âBetter,â he says. âWhat else?â
âBob,â you squirm under his gaze, eyes almost an electric blue even in the low light of lamp. Thereâs something different about him. Heâs never pushed you for an answer quite like this, not without apologising profusely about making you uncomfortable. Â
âQuit wriggling around or youâre gonna get me hard again,â he says, trying to hold your hips in place. âTell me what else you want. Just one more thing okay, and Iâll let you go.â One of his hands travels up your torso, cups your boob. âCâmon, one more for me and Iâll let you go,â he says as he kneads it, slow but strong.Â
âI want you to spank me, just a little bit,â you finally admit. Youâd seen him do it on video countless times, watched the way he drew his hand back, soothed the area after landing a hard smack. It had turned you on more than you wanted to admit, but asking him to do it felt like torture. Felt needy.Â
âYouâve neverâŚâ he trails off, hand coming back out of your shirt to caress your cheek.Â
âI tried, but he was a bit heavy handed. I think Iâd like it if it was something softer, you know,â you shrug, leaning into his touch.Â
He nods. âOkay, thatâs good, see. Three things we can try together,â he smiles, soft again. Youâre about to press him for his preferences when you hear a pathetic mewl come from the other side of the door. You check the time.Â
âShit, we should probably feed her,â you say, getting off him, pulling on your pair of pants. âBob, do you think I could have my underwear back?â
He looks flabbergasted. âAre you running out?â
âNo, but I have three incomplete sets of lingerie, and thatâs pretty much all the lingerie I own,â you say to him, arms folded over your chest.Â
âYou got plans that require lingerie?âÂ
âNo, I just like having complete sets.â
He rolls his eyes, throws a shirt on. âCâmon letâs feed her before she starts climbing the walls,â he says, effectively ending the conversation.Â
âBob,â you huff.Â
âOkay, fine.â He crosses his room, opens up the top drawer of the chest of drawers, and holds the lilac piece heâd taken off you when you filmed the test video in the air. He walks over and presses it into your hand. âSince you asked so nicely.â He doesnât mention the rest, just opens the door and scoops Angie into his arms. âLetâs get you fed, weâve kept you waiting for so long havenât we?âhe coos at her. She just mewls in response. You sigh. At least heâs washed them, you think as you pocket them.Â
Once Angieâs been fed, the house is sufficiently clean, and youâve showered you wrap yourself up and step outside so you can go water Yelena and Avaâs plants, and feed Yelenaâs new guinea pig. Theyâd gone to Ohio to see Yelenaâs parents and wouldnât be back until way after New Yearâs. Bobâs right behind you, beanie pulled down over his hears, Angieâs leash in a gloved hand.Â
âLook at you, youâre a proper cat dad,â you say as you lock the door.Â
âYou know me, super responsible parent,â he mumbles through his scarf.Â
When you get to Yelena and Avaâs, Bob waits outside, keeps Angie occupied in case she finds Yelenaâs pet a little too interesting. Heâs watching her roll around in the snow when you come back out, intensely focused as she shakes it off just to find a deeper patch that she can throw herself into. He startles when he hears the click shut behind him, the mechanical whirring as you hit the lock button on the keypad. You hold your hand out for her leash, and he hesitates at first, but he gives it to you anyways, watching as you clip it back into her harness. The two of you walk your usual route to the park, then do a couple of laps around the park, stopping every now and then so Angie can cover herself in snow.Â
âI swear Iâve never seen a cat like the snow this much,â Bob remarks, amused as she purrs, shakes herself off and does it all again.Â
âShe loves it so much itâs almost scary, if you let her out in the backyard she will come back sopping wet and complain at you until you dry her, even though the only reason sheâs wet is because she thinks sheâs a fucking husky or something,â you answer as you watch her. He snorts, then smiles and starts waving at someone behind you. When you turn, two little girls with their hair in pigtails are waddle-running towards you, excited grins on their faces while someone you presume is their mother tells them to slow down, wait for her. They donât seem to hear, excited shouts of âHI MISTER BOB,â echoing through the cold. Angieâs ears perk up, and youâre surprised when they get there and she immediately offers herself to them, eyes wide as they look at Bob.Â
âCan we pet her again mister Bob? Are we allowed? Our mom says we must always ask if we are allowed,â one of them says, proudly puffing out her chest as she explains her motherâs rules. Theyâre twins, dressed in identical red and white snowsuits. If not for the small scar in one of the girlâs eyebrows you wouldnât be able to tell them apart.Â
Bob looks at you, and you nod.Â
âSure girls, go ahead,â he says as they kneel in the snow, small, mittened hands gently rubbing at Angie. Sheâs purring loud, writhing and moving herself around. Every time she stretches, you hear them giggle and whisper âbiiiiiig stretchâ to themselves. Theyâre engrossed in the act of playing with Angie by the time their mother catches up, slightly out of breath, and then a man comes up behind her pushing a stroller.Â
âIâm so sorry, we tried telling them to calm down,â the mother pants, hands on her knees, her breath forming small clouds in front of her face.Â
âItâs no problem, Iâve never seen Angie roll over like that for anyone if Iâm being honest so as long as sheâs happy, Iâm happy,â you laugh. You introduce yourself to them, offering your gloved hand so they can shake.Â
âIâm Marie, thank you so much for your patience,â she apologises again.Â
âIâm Jordan,â the dad says, taking your hand in a firm grip.Â
Youâre about to introduce Bob when Marie says, âOh we met, about two weeks back, before Christmas. He was here with her too. The girls have been obsessed ever since, keep asking us to ask him to let them come over and play with her for a little,â she explains.
âThey almost gave me their address so I could bring her over,â he laughs, eyes bright. Jordan and Marie just shake their heads.Â
âKids,â they sigh, âdo not take your eyes off them for even a second,â Jordan says. âIf you do, theyâre booking it to the nearest cat or giving out addresses,â he chuckles.Â
âIâm surprised they saw us,â Bob squints. âEveryone looks like a vague human shape to me.â
âAngieâs harness got their attention,â Jordan explains, eyeing the bundle in the stroller nervously when it starts making fussy little sounds. Marie notices too, because she turns a little serious.Â
âGirls, letâs go. Babyâs getting fussy and you donât wanna catch a cold. You know, you guys should swing by the little bar a couple of blocks from here. On New Yearâs Eve they show the ball drop on TV, do free fries until about 1am. Weâve gone practically every year for the past seven years and itâs never that noisy so you could bring Angie with you? Theyâve never had a problem with pets in other years,â she says. You look at Bob. You guys hadnât made plans for New Yearâs, and free fries was always a win in your book. He smiles at you, and you have to tear your eyes away from him to respond to Marie.Â
âThat sounds great actually, weâll see you there. Weâll bring some toys so the girls can play with her,â you say, and laugh when you hear high pitched squeals.Â
They wave goodbye until you can no longer see them, and you and Bob continue your loop, stopping in at the cafĂŠ. You spend a good ten minutes defending yourself when the owners accuse you of being a workaholic and deadbeat mother to your cat. Bob is no help, just shakes his head pitifully as they level these accusations at you. You do get a free pastry out of it, and for that you are very thankful. Definitely worth the court case.Â
You guys spend the rest of your day just lounging around, watching old movies and falling in and out of sleep on the couch, you nestled comfortably in Bobâs arms.Â
When New Yearâs Eve comes, the snow has stopped, and youâre so thankful. It was great to be able to see past your own hand while you were walking. You have Angieâs lead in one hand, and a bag of toys in the other. Bob keeps trying to take something from you, but you refuse to budge.
âYouâre always carrying stuff for me, or taking my jacket or something, I promise you I will not die if my hands are occupied okay Bob?â
He sighs. âI guess. But only because itâs not that far.â
And heâs right, you guys are there in under twenty minutes. The bar isnât too full; parents seated with their children, groups of friends playing pool. The music isnât too loud and the lighting is a little dim.Â
âYou guys made it,â you hear Jordan say. Heâs sitting at a table with Marie, the twins, and a couple of other people, couples maybe. Heâs holding the baby from yesterday in his arms, gently swaying with him.Â
âYeah, we figured it would be nice⌠and we also love free food,â you say. You kneel down to take Angie off her lead and she beelines to the girls, hopping up and stretching herself across their laps.Â
âThat is incredible,â Bob whispers, âare they giving her catnip or something?âÂ
âTheyâre like five,â you elbow him, âAngie just loves attention, and thereâs two very energetic sources of attention right there.â
Bob laughs, and then you guys shake the hands of the people around the table. Mostly people who lived near here, like you.
âHow did I not know about this?â You ask an older lady to your left. Names are escaping you, and youâre not sure everyone here fully remembers who theyâre talking to either.Â
âItâs pretty small, and us talking about it tends to get lost in the chatter of announcements about other bigger things happening in the community this time of the year,â she explains.Â
You flit through different conversations, talking about reality tv with one young couple and then moving onto a heated debate about whether the stock market is real or not with a pair of investment bankers. You donât talk to Bob much, donât even really see him much until you guy play a game of pool with Marie and Jordan while the twins brush out Angieâs fur.Â
The game is slow, conversation dragging out the time between turns. Bob is surprisingly good, sinking ball after ball, redeeming your sloppy shots.Â
âThatâs going to go in the Bob files too you know,â you say when the turn ends and Marie goes to collect more fries.Â
âHm?â
âPool savant. Thatâs going in the Bob files,â you say tapping the side of your head.Â
âYou give me too much credit you know. First extraordinaire, then savant. Iâm really not that good,â he laughs.Â
âYouâre literally so much better than at me at pool, you got like three in one go!â you exclaim.Â
âYeah I am quite good at pool arenât I?â he smiles.Â
You just roll your eyes. At some point he stands behind you to give you pointers, immediately regrets it when you accidentally hit him in the stomach with your cue. Marie and Jordan donât stop laughing, even while heâs doubled over in pain.Â
The noise in the venue is picking up as it gets closer to midnight, nothing unmanageable though, just groups of friends talking amongst themselves. At five minutes to midnight you feel the excitement rising, everyone turning to the TV as the ball gets ready to drop.Â
âI have a question for you,â Bob says. You guys are standing a little way away from the main crowd, leaning against a wall near the back of the bar.Â
âShoot.â
âDo you⌠on New Yearâs ⌠do you like, do the kissing thing?â he stumbles.Â
âThe kissing thing? Yes I do the kissing thing,â you laugh lightly. âWhoâs asking?â
You can feel the excitement in your bones as the bar gets ready to count down.Â
âTen, nineâŚâ the bar yells in unison.Â
âIs it okay if itâs me?â He asks, stepping closer. You see his hands twitch at his side, pulling the sleeves of his sweater down.Â
âEight.. Seven⌠sixâŚâ
âOf course itâs okay if itâs you,âyou say, taking his hands in yours, pulling him closer until youâre practically in his arms.Â
âFive⌠fourâŚâ
He doesnât wait until the end of the countdown, just puts his hands on your waist and presses his lips to yours. You can feel his impatience in the way your noses bump together at first, the way he canât quite seem to get the grip he wants to on you, but when he works it out you feel that familiar tug of wanting in you, stronger than you think it has any right to be. You faintly register the cheering of the crowd, the shout of âHappy New Year!â that rings out across the bar as he presses his tongue into yours, hungry. Heâs pulling apart too soon, leaning in, his lips dangerously close to your ear.Â
âWe should go home. Letâs go home,â he says.Â
Heâs already looking at the exit, ready to pull his jacket on. Â
You guys say your goodbyes, get Marie and Jordanâs details and promise the girls that youâll let them play with Angie some time in the near future. You and Bob practically speed walk home, ignoring the tension between you, like if you imagine that you didnât high tail it out of a bar over a kiss, then it didnât actually happen. Youâre going to ignore how nervous he was when he was asking, the way his fingers wouldnât stay still. Youâre absolutely not thinking about how impatient he was when he kissed you, how he couldnât even wait for the countdown to end before he was pressing you to him.Â
When you get home you put some treats out for Angie, and he just waits, patient as ever while you check the back door, make sure everythingâs okay. Then he leads you into his bed, and takes you apart so soft and slow you canât believe this is the same man from less than thirty minutes ago. He undoes you with slow drags of his tongue against your core, doesnât stop until your pulling at his hair, begging him for more, trying to clutch at his shirt so you can bring him up.Â
âPlease Bob more, I need you,â you whine, and he listens.Â
Pushes into you with slow deliberate strokes, just sucks at your neck when you beg him to go faster. He drags your orgasm out of you, groaning at the way you squeeze around him, stopping briefly so he can look at you beneath him, hair a mess, fresh marks blossoming across your neck.Â
âFuck, youâre so beautiful,â heâs sighing before he finally gives you what you want, fast and unrelenting. He doesnât stop until youâre thoroughly fucked out and incoherent, a mess beneath him when he finally collapses next to you, spent.Â
Two weeks after New Years you get your money from Bob, almost $2000.
âYouâre joking,â you say to him when you see him at breakfast. âThis canât be half of what the video made, you promise me youâre not adding extra.â
âI promise,â he holds his hands up. âItâs a good video, people paid to see it, and some people tipped extra. Holiday themed stuff always goes over a treat, I swear. You can ask Joaquin the kind of money he makes around Valentineâs day,â he says. You just sigh, accept that you wonât get him to admit any different if he is lying. âI know, itâs unbelievable right? It fluctuates like crazy though, just depends on what everyoneâs feeling. The first time I made more than $1000 I blew it on an expensive new laptop and then had to scrounge like crazy for rent when the rest of the monthâs earnings didnât quite pan out,â he chuckles.Â
âShit, thatâs a bit scary,â you say.Â
âNah, itâs fine now. Iâve been doing this for so long I kind of have a pretty steady subscriber base. And I try do something special each month to boost revenue, get new subscribers in the door. Also helps to sell individual videos Iâve found, sometimes people want something really specific but they donât wanna come to your channel. Iâve done sex toy partnerships too, those are so much fun itâs unreal,â he explains, âsorry, none of this matters to you,â he stops abruptly.
âNo, no itâs fine. I donât know all this stuff. I donât really research,â you cringe when you say this but he just laughs.Â
âWell Iâm your personal encyclopaedia if you ever have questions,â he responds.Â
âDid you ever have a manager? Or sign to an agency?â You ask immediately.Â
âTried. Two guys I knew when I was doing more camboy shit said they were starting an agency, that theyâd manage me for a fraction of what they charge other people, but then asked for almost 25% of my earnings before tax. Bullshit that only works on people who are brand new, and it sucks, you know. Thereâs a lot to do between planning, organising and pushing out content and to have absolute assholes drain your pocket before you even pay the tax on it?â He shakes his head, and you see the way he clenches his jaw, angry. âThe last I heard of them, they were on reddit trying to get new models to sign with them, but itâs not going too well for them,â he smiles.Â
âOh so youâre pretty much self-made,â you say, âMr. Entrepreneur over here. High value male.â
âPlease donât call me that oh my god,â he groans, putting his hands over his face. He just cringes as you laugh.Â
â Do you have any plans for today? Let me take you out, since Iâm practically rolling in it now,â you say, miming making it rain.Â
He just shakes his head, rolls his eyes as he takes your plate from in front of you.Â
âYou know you can just ask me to hang out like a normal person, Iâm not letting you pay for anything because as luck would have it, I also just got paid,â he says as he washes dishes.Â
âYouâre so annoying.â
âSure. Iâm sure you just find me sooo annoying,â he says, washing his hands, wiping them on a dish rag. âBut no, I donât have plans for today, and I would like to hang with you, thanks for asking,â he says.Â
âOkay well, be ready to go in an hour,â you say hopping off the stool and making your way upstairs before he can ask you what youâre going to be doing.Â
You put on your most comfortable outfit, just jeans and a cute top, and make sure to put in your best earrings. Youâd be underneath a big old coat and wrapped up in a scarf and a beanie, so you werenât sure any effort was truly needed but you thought it would be nice anyway. Heâs downstairs waiting for you when you finally finish getting ready. Heâs also got a nice top and nice jeans on, hands in his pockets while he rocks back and forth on his heels.Â
âReady?â You ask, slipping your coat on, wrapping your scarf around your neck. You bring an umbrella just in case it rains, but the weather app had said today was supposed to be cold but clear.Â
Itâs icy cold when you step outside, the sunlight outside too weak to do anything against the bite of winter.Â
âGod, I canât wait for it to get warmer,â you say. Despite the scarf you can feel your lips freezing, you can feel your fingers and toes turning to ice in your gloves and thick socks.Â
âHard agree,â he says, âgetting sick of all these layers all the time,â he mutters, muffled by the thick wool of his scarf. You canât see but you know his ears and nose are tipped red. The ground beneath you is icy in parts, sludgy in others where the snow has been trampled, mixed with the soil from peopleâs lawns. Not so pretty when the snow was no longer falling, but you enjoyed being able to go outside like this, biting cold or not. You link arms with Bob, lean into him as you guys walk to the subway station, silent the whole way besides a few remarks about the leftover Christmas decorations still in shop windows.Â
âOkay where are you taking me?â He asks when he sits next to you. Heâs looking at you, curious.Â
âGuess.â
âI canât guess. I donât know what happens in that pretty little head of yours,â he smiles.Â
You ignore the way your stomach turns when he says that. âIâll give you a hint, youâve mentioned it to me when we were Christmas shopping,â you say. Youâre not sure if heâll even remember, Christmas feels like that long ago. He thinks for a couple of seconds, eyes grave before his face clears up.Â
âWinter Village?â
âYup, got it in one!â You clap, for him as he mock bows. âYou said youâd never been, and I did say Iâd take you after New Yearâs,â you explain, watching the stops to make sure you donât miss yours. The train is quiet, people minding their business, eyes glued to their phones or closed as they listen to music. You lean your head on his shoulder, letting yourself just watch as you speed through the tunnels. You pull him up when itâs your stop, practically dragging him out the doors in your excitement.Â
âWow you might be more excited for this than I am,â he laughs, as you guys emerge from the subway station.Â
âItâs nice being in the city when itâs not so full,â you explain. You link your arm through his again, drag him through the crowd of people.Â
âI thought you said it wasnât that full,â he says to you when the people have thinned a little bit.Â
âTrust me, it can be so much worse,â you say to him. You drag him to a hot chocolate stand that claims to have the best hot chocolate in the city. Order two larges and pay for them before he can even think about pulling out his card. You stick your tongue out at him when he sighs.Â
âNot so fun when the shoes on the other foot, huh?â You say as you wait in the collection line. Your order is ready sooner than you expected, two regular hot chocolates, no frills no nonsense so you guys could really judge whether they had the best hot chocolate in the city or not. Itâs delicious, not too sweet, and not too rich. It goes down smooth too, doesnât taste watered down or too milky. You guys sip your hot chocolates as you peek into the various stores. Thereâs one having a sale on old Christmas stock, prices slashed so far down that you simply canât resist buying yourself a beautiful pair of gloves from them. Theyâre soft, thick and you immediately swap from the pair youâre wearing to the new pair. The difference is unbelievable. You shouldâve known your old gloves would do very little to actually keep you warm, but youâd held onto them anyway. Bob gets himself another scarf, some soft cream cashmere thing that looks super comfortable even before heâs put it on. You guys wander to the some of the craft stores, and Bob makes a point of buying you a crocheted two-headed calf throw.Â
âStop, you like it I know you like it, you have the poem pinned to the wall in the hobby room. Just take the throw. Please?â He asks. You give in, watch as the lady wraps it up real tight and packs it away in the cutest little bag, slips her card into the bag in case you want to buy from her store again. You probably would, she had some great stuff. When youâve had a look in basically all the stores, you guys look for some food, opting to keep it easy with sandwiches from a store that has a line going so far back you pray that theyâre worth it. You eat them in front of the fountain, frozen over because of the cold, sunlight scattered by the frozen bursts of water.Â
âGod, this really was worth it,â Bob says through a mouthful of his sandwich. You nod, absolutely tearing into yours. When you guys are done, you just sit on your seats, watch the throngs of people lining up to take a picture with the frozen fountain.Â
âDo you want one?â You ask him, holding your hand out for his phone.Â
âSorry?â
âA picture with the fountain. Do you want one?â
He hesitates, then nods. âIf thatâs not too much?â
âOf course itâs not too much,â you say, pushing yourself up. You guys wait for a family of what seems like ten people to finish taking their individual selfies, then watch as they make their way through various combinations of people until they finally take they group photo together and leave, scrolling through the pictures as they go. Bob stands in front of the statue, slightly to the side, and you have to motion for him to move a little closer to the centre multiple times before he actually does it. You snap a few, make him pose (âGet silly with it Bob, come on. Show me that goofy side!â) and only let him come back to get his phone when youâre satisfied with the pictures you have.Â
âYour turn,â he says, pushing you towards the spot where he was just standing. You give him a few good poses â some cheeky over the shoulder looks, the classic peace sign â and then youâre telling him to come stand next to you.Â
âLetâs get a selfie together it will be fun,â you say as you watch him drag his feet. An old man walking with a dog offers to take the picture instead when he sees the two of you struggling, trying to adjust the phone so it gets both of your in the frame and as much of the frozen fountain as possible.Â
âThere we go, come in a little closer,â he says to you and you do, stepping towards Bob cautiously, leaning in when he puts his arm around you. The old man takes a few, sticks around while the two of you make sure youâre happy with them.
âIâll send them to you when we get home,â Bob says, tucking his phone away. You guys spend the rest of the day just walking around, ducking into any shops that catch your eye. You make Bob try on five different hats at a novelty hat store, snapping a picture each time much to his dismay. You guys make tracks to the subway station when you begin to feel your feet positively aching. Youâre so tired that when you lean your head on Bobâs shoulder you fall asleep almost immediately, not stirring until Bob gently shakes you when you get to your stop. Youâre not sure when he does it but at some point between getting off the train and exiting the station he slips his gloved hand into yours and he doesnât let go until you guys get home. Â
