“Reno.” Tseng scans him. “You look better.”

“You look the same.” A breath. “Compliment.”

“How are you—”

“Fuck, I’m tired of that question.” Reno rubs his eyes. “Can we talk about literally anything else?”

“Your psychiatrist says you’re making steady progress. She thinks you may be ready for low-stakes training simulations.”

“Great. Rookie year redux.” Still, he feels a flicker of hope—maybe he’ll be out of this hellhole soon. Maybe for good.

“Has Rude visited yet? He said he planned to once you were approved.”

The mention of Rude makes his heart rate spike.

Shinra Medical is a huge step up from the backwater hospital in the Wutaian mountains.

His room is bigger. Cleaner. There’s soft lighting instead of harsh fluorescents, real sheets instead of whatever paper-thin excuse he had before, and even a floor-to-ceiling window, bulletproof—naturally. You’d think it was a hotel, if not for the shiny Shinra Medical logo plastered on the wall.

Still a cage, but at least it comes with better furniture.

Reno paces across the room, no longer dragging an IV behind him. His body is frustratingly close to functional, enough that he’s itching to move again, so close to being back in action that he’s already looking for excuses to make a scene.

He’s on his thirty-first lap around the kitchenette-dining area when the door slides open and Rude steps in, unannounced.

“Hey.” Rude’s voice, bitter and biting, cuts through the black, then fades as fast as it came.

Reno takes a shallow breath and tries to bring his upside-down world back into focus as it careens violently to the left.

“Don’t die on me.”

Don’t be so dramatic, he wants to say, but the words don’t form. His mouth feels like it’s been stung by a thousand bees, puffy and swollen and hot.

He remembers a bright light—the sound of gunfire—and then…

A tilt and a whirl to the right this time; Reno’s stomach jams into his throat.

“Reno!” Rude’s voice is thick, not with its usual confident timbre, but something much more alarming: raw, honest-to-gods fear.
