footsteps  are  quiet  as  she  steps  into  the  warmth  of  the  kitchens.     the  scent  of  baked  bread  and  pastries  fills  her  nostrils,   and  despite  having  come  here  in  search  of  something  savory,   she  cannot  deny  how  tempting  the  smell  is.   in  fact,   it  is  almost  enough  to  distract  her  and make her  nearly  collide  with  another     —     almost.     blue  eyes  find  elowyn’s,   guarded  and  sharp.   the  faintest  trace  of  a  smirk  tugs  at  the  corner  of  her  lips  when  she  sees  the  chocolate,   clutched  to  the  girl’s  chest  like  a  precious  treasure,   or  perhaps  a  conquered  one.      ❝      you  look  like  you’ve  been  just  caught  stealing  from  a  sept,      ❞      she  remarks,   her  voice  low.   there  is  a  hint  of  mockery  there.     a  heartbeat,   and  she  is  stepping  aside,   granting  the  space  to  pass,   though  she  makes  no  move  herself.     one  of  her  eyebrows  lifts.      ❝      i  take  it  you  had  a  good  time  at  the  celebration  last  night?      ❞        

her  sleeves  are  rolled  high  and  her  collar  is  undone,   in  protest  of  the  heat  of  the  south.     boots  are  resting  on  a  chair  before  her,   and  she  huffs  out  a  laugh that resembles a snort  when  her  brother  speaks,   shaking  her  head.     there  is  a  smear  of  something  on  her  forearm:     mud,   perhaps,   or  dirt  from  her  earlier  training.   she  doesn’t  quite  remember,   nor  does  she  care.      ❝      they  most  definitely  are,      ❞      anya  says,   rolling  their  eyes.      ❝      but  i  miss  having  them  around.      ❞      shadow  is  as  important  to  them  as  their  own  heart,   as  the  air  they  breathe.     not  spending  her  days  with  him  feels  like  missing  a  limb.     she  leans  back  on  her  seat,   looking  up  at  her  brother,   lips  pressed  tightly  against  one  another.      ❝      how  long  are  we  supposed  to  stay  in the keep  for?      ❞    

eyes  watch  the  dragon  settling  into  place  with  quiet  interest,   her  pale  features  betraying  none  of  her  thoughts.     there  is  no  flicker  of  offense,   no  hint  of  wounded  pride,   no  bitterness     —     even  if  some  of  those  feelings  burn  in  the  back  of  her  throat,   acid  and  rotten.     ariadne  remains  unreadable,   still,   like  the  sea  before  a  tempest.     she  leans  forward  slightly,   resting  one  of  her  elbows  on  the  armrest  of  her  chair.     a  bracelet  made  of  pearls  glints  on  her  wrist.      ❝      it  was  beautiful,      ❞      comes  her  agreement,   the  words  deliberately  bland.      ❝      but  i  have  always  found  the  beauty  of  this  court  to  be  like  perfume,   meant  to  mask  the  foulness  that  lies  beneath.      ❞      tilting  her  head,   she  lets  her  gaze  sweep  across  the  board,   analyzing  the  game,   choosing  her  next  move.     fingers  toy  with  one  of  the  pieces:     a  trebuchet,   which  she  moves  with  firm  elegance,   pushing  forward  into  enemy  territory.     now,   she  smiles.      ❝      i  enjoyed  myself  as  much  as  one  can  enjoy  a  feast  meant  to  remind  everyone  of  their  place,      ❞      lifting  the  cup  to  her  lips,   she  takes  another  sip,   only  to  then  make  a  dismissive  gesture  with  one  of  her  hands.      ❝      i  knew  we  would  not  be  welcomed  with  open  arms,   of course.     i  care  little  for  the  nobles  and  their  petty  gossip.     coldness  has  never  been  something  that  deterred  us,   would  you  not  agree?      ❞      the  smile  turns  sharper,   wider.     more  salt  than  sugar.      ❝      or  perhaps  you  have  forgotten.     life  must  be  very  different  in  casterly  rock,   i  imagine.      ❞           

viserra  lingers  at  the  edge  of  the  yard,   squinting  underneath  the  sunlight.     the  sound  of  clashing  steel  had  beckoned  her  despite  her  intention  to  only  enjoy  some  fresh  air.     arms  cross  over  the  red  velvet  of  her  dress,   a  dagger  discreetly  strapped  at  her  thigh  beneath  the  fabrics.      ❝      why  do  you  have  so  much  energy?      ❞      her  voice  is  tired,   though  tinged  with  amusement,   and  her  eyes,   restless,   flicker  to  the  person  he  has  so  easily  disarmed,   nose  crinkling  delicately.      ❝      and  how  are  you  even  properly  awake?     i  can  still  feel  all  the  wine  i  drank  last  night,   i  swear.      ❞      the  princess  steps  closer,   making  a  dismissive  gesture  with  one  of  her  hands.      ❝      i  needed  air,      ❞        she  offers  as  an  explanation  for  her  presence.     the  dark  circles  underneath  her  eyes  are  quite  telling:     it  is  obvious  that  she  has  not  slept  well.      ❝      our  darling  niece  looked  the  part  of  a  little  princess,  didn’t  she?     ❞ what was born as a fond smile now twists into something mirthless. ❝ though  i  don’t  think  mother  liked  the  egg  i  chose  for  her.      ❞                 

the  gardens  are  a  wave  of  calm  compared  to  the  rest  of  the  red  keep ( even more so when many are still recovering )  and  the  dragon  claims  the  balcony  overseeing  the  restless  sea.  visenya  sits  atop  the  balustrade,  the  mid-afternoon  table  set  with  drink  and  food  alike.  tanzanite  eyes  overlook  the  ships  passing  by  and  only  when  they  hear  footsteps  on  the  gravel  below  do  they  look  back  towards  the  gardens.  ❝  here  for  the  food  or  to  look  out  to  the  sea?  i won't mind the company.  ❞

at  her  sister’s  inquiry,   she  does  not  speak  right  away.     the  scent  of  sea  salt  and  blooming  roses  is  heavy  in  the  air,   almost  soothing,   and  viserra  yearns  for  the  company  of  the  person  closest  to  her.     her  steps  slow  as  she  nears  the  balcony  where  the  other  sits.     sometimes,   she  envies  the  way  visenya  manages  to  appear  so  calm,   so  collected,   so  innately  graceful.      ❝      that  depends  on  whatever  drinks  and  pastries  you  are  offering,      ❞      finally comes  her  answer,   light  and  teasing.     she  tucks  a  strand  of  hair  behind  her  ear,   lips  curving  while  lilac  eyes  sweep  over  the  spread  of  food,   skirts  trailing  behind  her. she finds  her  place  beside  her  sister, as she so often does. as she always will.      ❝      although,  the  sea  might  be  better  company  than  courtiers  with  wicked  headaches  and  too  much  to  say  about  our  family.      ❞      there  is  a  pause,   barely  longer  than  a  heartbeat,   during  which  she  leans  against  the  balustrade  and  lets  out  a  soft  sigh.      ❝      i  didn’t  sleep  so  well  last  night     —     the  castle  feels  too  crowded,   even  when  i’m  in  my  chambers.      ❞    

raya's  hands  find  the  mane  of  the  stable's  calmest  horse,  whispering  words  of  understanding  ━━  it  is  restless,  just  like  she  is, especially after such a celebration.  there  is  a  small  smile  on  their  lips  as  the  sound  of  clashing  blades  echoes  behind  the  northern  liege.  then,  a new presence.  ❝ what  called  to  you,  my  liege? ❞  raya  starts,  turning  slightly  to  face  the  other  noble.  for  a  heartbeat,  her  eyes  look  at  the  training  guards  before  returning  to  the  other's  gaze.   ❝ the  horses  or  the  loud  display  of...  valour? ❞

anya  doesn’t  truly  announce  her  arrival,   she  never  does.     she  moves  like  a  shadow,   steps  quiet  despite  her  heavy  boots,   strands  of  hair  falling  loose  of  the  braid  she  had  half-heartedly  styled  herself.     though  they  are  silent,   raya  senses  their  presence. of course she does.       ❝      neither,      ❞      they  answer  cheerfully,   sporting  a  crooked  grin  that  promises  either  trouble  or  affection     —     with  them,   it  is  quite  hard  to  tell.     feet  come  to  a  halt  beside  her  sister.      ❝      i  was  actually  looking  for  you.     if  you  wish  to  go  for  a  ride,   however,   i  would  love  to  join  you.      ❞      she  leans  a  forearm  on  the  stable  gate,   watching  as  the  horse  nudges  the  other’s  palm,   and  she  cannot  help  but  reach  out,   gently  caressing  the  animal’s  mane.      ❝      how  did  you  fare  last  night,   little  sister?      ❞      perhaps  the  goal  in  calling  her  little  is  to  annoy  her,   perhaps  it  is  meant  with  fondness.      ❝      did  you  find  any  company  worthy  of  your  time?      ❞          

the  rogare  finds  the  quietest  of  places  to  take  in  the  red  keep  once  more,  away  from  all  the  nobles  as  they  groan  in  pain  from  bad  decisions  made  the  night  before  (  counterproductive,  truly,  seeing  as  she  ought  to  be  fishing  for  anything  that  might  be  interesting  enough  ).  hands  clasped  behind  her  back,  isara  stands  at  the  entrance  of  the  the  throne  room.  ❝ that  looks  uncomfortable,  does  it  not? ❞  isara  speaks  out  towards her company.  ❝ before  i  saw  it  for  the  first  time,  i  imagined  there  would  be  a  cushion. ❞

she  is  leaning  against  a  stone  pillar,   arms  crossed  loosely  above  her  chest.     the  castle  is  quiet  today,   a  far  cry  from  the  previous  evening,   and  though  she  is  one  to  enjoy  a  little  chaos,   the  silence  soothes  her,   too.     when  isara  comments  on  the  iron  throne,   her  expression  is  first  unreadable.   the  corner  of  her  lips  lifts  in  the  slightest  hint  of  contained  amusement.      ❝      a  cushion?      ❞      low  notes  are  teasing,   as  they  often  are  when  it  comes  to  anya.      ❝      that  would  ruin  its  purpose,   would  it  not?   i’ve  heard  it  is  meant  to  make  those  unworthy  bleed.      ❞      now,   their  smile  grows,   accompanied  by  a  dramatic  lift  of  their  eyebrows.     they  move  closer,   hair  tangled  from  the  outing  they’ve  just  returned  from:     back  home,   she  would  usually  ride  at  dawn,   and  that  is  a  habit  she  refuses  to  break  even  while  she  is  here,   where  the  sun  feels  too  hot  and  the  air  too  warm.      ❝      anyone  who  wants  to  sit  on  that  thing  too  badly  should  not  be  allowed  near  it,   i'd wager.      ❞      they  finish  with  a  shrug. 

she  sits  with  the  sort of poise  that is expected  of  her,   a  princess  of  fire  and  blood.     her  gaze  lingers  on  the  souvenir  in  the  other’s  hand,   remembering  the  previous  night,   the  egg  she  had  chosen  for  her  niece.     the  way  it  had  called  to  her.     she  is  ripped  out  of  her  thoughts  when  her  companion  speaks,   immediately  slipping  on  a  careful  mask  of  cheer.      ❝      there  is  no  need  to  apologize,   my  lady.      ❞      viserra  says,   voice  smooth  as  velvet,   and  reaches  over  the  table  to  pour  herself  a  cup  of  tea.      ❝      last  night’s  feast  delighted  many,     ❞      she  has  always  been  good  at  making  mindless  conversation,   speaking  of  everything  yet  nothing  at  all.      ❝      my  niece  looked  radiant.      as  did  most  of  the  court,   i imagine, once  the  wine  started  flowing.      ❞      with  a  chuckle,   the  princess  grabs  a  honey  cake,   nibbling  on  it  delicately.     lilac  eyes  look  at  aarohi  now,   intrigued.      ❝      you  are  far  from  home,   lady  moraqos     —     what  is  your  impression  of  our  kingdom  so  far?      ❞      

she  studies  the  pieces  before  her,   but  her  thoughts  are  far  away:     out  on  the  water,   in  the  seas  she  has  come  to  know  so  well,   yearning  for  the  chance  to  return  to  them.     the  light  reflects  off  the  polished  board,   casting  shadows  upon  it.     ariadne  leans  back  in  her  chair,   fingers  tracing  the  edge  of  her  cup  absentmindedly,   and  when  her companion speaks,   her  attention  returns  to  the  game.     she  has  never  much  liked  to  lose.      ❝      peaceful,      ❞      she  echoes,   a  pale  brow  lifting.     her  lips  are  not  quite  curved,   yet  they  still  manage  to  communicate  faint  amusement,   even  as  she  shifts  to  move  one  of  her  elephants  with  deliberate  slowness.      ❝      perhaps  you  are  right.     the  morning  after  a  celebration  does  have  its  peculiar  sort  of  charm,   i  suppose.     it’s  quiet     —     like  the  calm  before  a  storm.      ❞      the  memory  of  the  targaryens’  new  babe  lingers  in  her  mind.     her  birth  marks  the  arrival  of  a  new  heir,   a  new  piece  added  to  the  board,   to  the  game  of  thrones  some  like  to  play.     not  that  she  would  care.     lifting  her  cup,   she  takes  a  short  sip  of  its  contents  before  speaking once more.      ❝      what  did  you  make  of  the  feast  last  night,   gysella?      ❞          

    ❝      I   always   enjoyed   teas   -   back   home.   that   is,   well,   back   in   essos   -   you see, they   are   rather   different.        ❞    nymph   corrects   herself,   femme   languid   in   her   movement   as   she   reaches   to   adjust   her   teacup   upon   it's   saucer.   while   westerosi   teas   have   become   part   of   her   daily   routine,   there   is   something   to   be   said   of   the   strength   and   purity   of   those   of   esssos   that   is   greatly   missed    (   how   the   westerosi   seem   to   water   them   down   so,   until   she   needs   add   far   too   much   sugar   for   even   a   hint   of   flavour   ).    ❝      my   dear sweet   cousin dahlya   sent   some   along   with   gifts   for   rhaella,   and   I   have   so   missed   them.   you   should   try   some   -   really,   I   insist.       ❞

fingers  curl  around  the  proffered  cup,   but  viserra  does  not  yet  lift  it  to  her  lips.     instead,   she  watches  the  steam  rise,   the  scent  of  the  tea  oddly  enticing.     lilac  eyes  rise  to  find  catraena’s     —     her  expression  is  gentle,   far  less  lively  than  the  one  she  usually  dons  when  in  the  company  of  others.      ❝      it  would  be  quite  rude  to  refuse  such  a  gracious  offering,   would  it  not?     and  i  was  raised  to  be  ever  so  polite,      ❞      old  habits  die  hard,   and  so  does  the  mirth  on  her  tongue.     her  smile,   however,   is  sincere  as  she  takes  a  measured  sip  of  the  beverage.     for  a  moment,   she  gives  nothing  away,   until  her  gaze  lights  up  in  admiration,   unable  to  stop  herself  from  drinking  some  more.      ❝      you  are  not  wrong:     this  is  delicious.     i  loathe  to  admit  it,   but  this  tea  is  not  just  different  than  whatever  it  is  we  drink  here,   it  is  better.      ❞      with  a  little  laugh,   the  princess  leans  back  on  her  seat.     when  she  speaks  again,   her  voice  is  as  soft  as  a  whisper,   genuinely  curious.      ❝      you  must  miss  it  terribly.     essos,   i  mean.      ❞

"  yes  ,  i  do  agree  —  "  shirei  began  ,  but  her  words  faltered  as  her  gaze  quickly  glanced  at  her  children  playing  by  the  fountain  .  "  jeyne  ,  please  tell  benjen  not  to  stray  too  close  to  the  water  ,  "  lady  stark  instructed  her  lady's  maid  ,  her  motherly  instincts  kicking  in  .  she  turned  back  to  her  companion  with  an  apologetic  smile  .  "  forgive  me  —  ,  "  she  mumbled  ,  hand  on  her  swollen  belly  .  "  he’s  fearless  as  a  wolf  pup,  that  one  .  and  lucky,  too  —  lucky  his  lady  mother  can  no  longer  chase  after  him  .  ”

at  the  sight  of  her  nephew’s  antics,   she  chuckles,   the  sound  low  and  almost  lazy.     she  is  sitting  next  to  her  good  -  sister,   arms  crossed  above  her  ribcage  as  they  watch  benjen  darting  towards  the  water  in  reckless  delight.      ❝      he  clearly  takes  after  his  aunt,      ❞      anya  begins,   dark  eyes  returning  to  her  companion  with  a  pleased  expression.      ❝      fearless,   and  far  too  quick  for  his  own  good.     but  you  don’t  need  to  chase  after  him.     that  is  what  i’m  here  for,   is  it  not?      ❞      what  had  been  a  smile  blooms  into  a  grin.     beneath  their  jests,   however,   lies  a  true  offer  to  help  whenever  it  may  be  needed.      ❝      let  him  train  with  me  for  an  afternoon,   and  he  will  be  sleeping  soundly  hours  before  supper.      ❞      she  adds,   winking.     then,   she  tilts  her  head,   studying  shirei’s  rounded  belly  with  something  gentler  in  her  gaze.      ❝      do  you  need  anything?      ❞      her  voice  is  more  serious  now,   yet  mischief  doesn’t  completely  abandon  it.      ❝      a  cup  of  water?   or  a  sweet  treat?   i  could  sneak  into  the  kitchens  and  find  you  just  about  anything,   i  reckon.      ❞   

there  is  a  stillness  to  the  queen  that  leaves  an  acrid  taste  in  the  back  of  the  throat;  aligning  with  a  truth  he  is  loath  to  admit—that  the  gods  have  allowed  time  to  take  hold  of  proposed  divinity  and  lay  waste  to  any  illusions  of  immortality.  watchful  gaze  remains  affixed  upon  crowned  dragoness,  even  as  self-imposed  distance  is  kept;  to  act  as  shield  would  only  invite  speculation—would  serve  as  fodder  for  further  discussion.  a  presence  at  his  back  claims  his  attention,  face  turning  to  meet  the  approaching  figure.    "    tell  me,  have  the  festivities  been  to  your  liking  ?    "    practiced  graces  come  to  the  surface,  violet  hues  reflecting  the  expected  delight  that  should  stem  from  the  moon’s  blessing.    "    have  you  found  joy  in  the  revelry  ?    "

steps  come  to  a  halt  beside  maekar,   cup  held  carelessly  between  her  fingers.     she’d  seen  him  from  afar,   standing  alone,   and  approached  with  no  hesitation,   perhaps  hoping  to  startle  him  slightly.     it’s  almost  disappointing,   how  he  seems  to  tell  she  is  there  before  she  can  even  announce  herself.     viserra  raises  a  brow  at  his  question,   tilting  her  head,   eyes  narrowing  as  if  she  were  in  deep  thought.     to  answer  candidly,   or  not     —     such  is  her  quandary.      ❝      have  the  festivities  been  to  my  liking?      ❞      she  echoes.     soon  comes  her  usual  smile,   settling  on  rosy  lips:     that  vibrant  gesture,   the  one  that  pretends  the  whole  world  is  a  jest,   and  she  the  spectator  supposed  to  giggle  at  it;     the  one  that  insists  nothing  can  affect  her  as  long  as  she  continues  to  be  loud,   and  fun,   and  delightful.      ❝      there  is  wine,   music,   good  food,   and  no  shortage  of  fools  to  make  fun  of  behind  their  backs.     what  is  not  to  like?      ❞      the  words  are  accompanied  by  brief  laughter,   eyes  rolling.      ❝      as  for  joy,      ❞      the  princess  continues,   mouth  curving  into  something  far  more  sardonic,   however  much  of  her  pantomime  it  retains.      ❝      i  would  not  quite  go  that  far     …     but  there  has  been  some.     i’ve  spent  most  of  the  evening  with  daenyra,   and  you  know  how  much  i  adore  her.      ❞      after  a  heartbeat,   she  adds:      ❝      how  about  you,   brother?      ❞      the  question  is  not  merely  a  courtesy,   but  a  real  concern,   rare  and  precious  amidst  a  sea  of  fake  pleasantries.      ❝      have  you  found  any  joy  tonight?      ❞
