My hobbit squad is working on a big project for the Brandywine Festival this year, and my part is building a little portable stage for hobbit performances. So at this point I've got a little maquette done, to be sure I'm happy with the proportions before I start cutting lumber.
I dare any hobbit to outperform Mayhem Jane. I dare you.
listen i'm not advocating for exotic animals as pets, but i really just feel like cheetahs are probably different
i feel like we need to give them another shot as housebeasts
this is a critter who wants greenies and then to take a nap on the couch next to me, and i KNOW it
cheetah in House perfec t size for put inside! inside very Soft and Comfort cheetah sleep soundly put cheetah in House. Put Cheetah In House. no problems ever in cheetah in ho use because good Happy and Satisfy for human where sleep. House yes a place for a cheetah put cheetah in house can trust cheetah for giveing good love to humans in house. friend cheetah
I mean, as someone who as worked in a zoo, this is fairly true.
Obvious disclaimer that you shouldn't have wild animals as pets.
But like, cheetahs are the only large cats that keepers will do free contact with. Hell, even most small cats don't get free contact. (Because small cats can be VICIOUS. They'll have a baby pallas cat wearing thicker gloves than when handling an owl. Because small cats can just be vicious.)
Like I think the only other cat at our zoo where I've seen free contact with was servals? Because I know they've used servals in shows to demonstrate their natural jumping ability. But I know servals can sometimes have a mean temper as well. Meanwhile they'll do the cheetah run and afterwards put the mic by the cheetahs and it's just like an engine with them purring. It's fascinating to watch when the message in every other large animal is "no free contact because it's dangerous even when they're born in captivity".
Legit if any wild animal could be adapted to a pet it would be cheetahs lmao. Only problem is they can be skittish and very anxious and that's why they're often raised around dogs in zoos to gain confidence.
congrats, i award you funniest take on this post

today we are going to learn about horses
horse fact 1: horses are partially exoskeletal
horse fact 2: horses are partially trees
horse fact 3: got frogs in em
these are all the facts we have about horses.
OP that's not even a full horse. You've literally only looked at the feet.
maybe one day we will be brave enough to lift our eyes and look, trembling, at the rest of the horse. not today, though. today, these are all the facts we have about horses.

“Snowball” looks like he smokes unfiltered cigarettes. Postcard from my collection - no date.
the smoke from the canadian wildfires has made my air quality be in the dangerous level for most of the day and i wanted to make a bit of a guide for what to do and make it a bit more applicable to people with disabilities, especially chronic illnesses
if you are in an area impacted by dangerous air quality:
stay hydrated and inside as much as possible. if you struggle staying hydrated, increase your salt or electrolyte intake. you can add electrolytes into your water with brands like liquid iv
if you don’t wear one already, now is a great time to start masking again (and keep it up! the pandemic isn’t over!) as it’ll help filter some of the smoke. specifically use an N-95 or a KN-95 — cloth or surgical masks are not equipped for this
people with asthma, lung disease like COPD, people with cardiovascular conditions, people with diabetes, and other circulatory conditions are at a significantly higher risk due to the nature of it being an air quality issue, but if you’re chronically ill outside of these categories it will still hit harder so be aware of yourself
pregnant people are also at a higher risk than the general public
if you are experiencing trouble breathing, heart palpitations, nausea, or dizziness and it’s not something you regularly do or it’s noticeably worse, please get medical help. i get most of these usually and i know those symptoms can be normal for people who follow me, so just be aware of your normal and judge from there
if you find yourself beginning to feel any of these symptoms but don’t have access to fast medical care or money is an issue, stay alert for the start and immediately take time to rest, put a cool washcloth over your eyes, or even your full face. do as much as you can to avoid any stress to your body from excess movement
for your air conditioning, keep it on a recirculate setting if you have that setting to prevent it from bringing outside air in. you can keep the air conditioning on even if you don’t have this setting though, so if you have poor heat regulation abilities please keep it on to avoid your body going through extra stress
additional air filters in the home are also beneficial. once this has passed, replace the filters so they are clear for any subsequent events
stay in rooms you can insulate from the outside. it can also be helpful to place rolled up towels or blankets along the seams of your doors and windows to prevent outside air from getting in
if you’ve been outside, take a shower to wash yourself off. if you can’t do a shower for whatever reason, try and grab a wet washcloth or some wet wipes and wash your hands and face. those two areas prevent the pollution from entering your eyes, nose, and mouth from either touching with the hand or it migrating on your face. washing your hair is recommended too, but again your mileage may vary on what you are able to do
here’s some extra reading if you want to look more into this:

I love episodes of Game Changer where the only way to win is by learning & the only way to learn is by playing. With some episodes, like Don't Wake Standards & Practices, the overall flow of the game becomes pretty apparent pretty quickly, & also there's some surprises along the way. But then there's episodes like Count the Rice, Deja Vu, or Bingo, where the basic conceit of what the game even is is an ongoing mystery. I love that stuff.

The Hermit. Art by Thiago Corrêa, from Cats Rule The Earth Tarot.
This is the card of isolation and introspection. The Hermit often appears when you are in need of alone time to draw your energy inward and find the answers you seek. This card is an invitation to take a break from your daily routine and seek for the knowledge that comes from within.
i do miss captain hastings (<- hasnt read or watched an agatha christie for a long time). like. hes basically what everyone thinks doctor watson is.
THINGS HE KNOWS: cricket. modes of transport. lots pf posh english people and their social codes.
THINGS HE DOESNT KNOW: literally anything else. regularly gets distracted from the case. fully does not know whats going on. him and poirot are like that one things they teach you on buisness school/things they dont teach you in buisness school-> thus, the sum of all human knowledge joke (you know the one).
poirot literallty just seems to keep him around as some kind of trophy husband/pet englishman/rubber duck/like. social lubricant i dont know what youd call it. like hes always just hanging around for no real reason. i love him so much
He is also there to yap about sports/car to confuse and distract people while poirot looks around
He take notes very well, can run, tackle and shoot the killer
Him and japp protect poirot from geting jumped at by the killer too
He is perfect because of all his beautiful flaws.
Poirot is literally like "I keep you around because you were made in a vat to be the world's most stereotypical Englishman so if I ever want to know how the average Englishman would react to a situation I can just ask you!" It's great.
Unironically I despise cute posts about how people who organize their personal libraries by size/color/vibes are Evil and Monstrous. First of all it’s none of your damn business what someone ELSE does with their personal belongings and second of all what? People are supposed to use Dewey in their own home? Dewey hasn’t even DREAMED of the subject categories I require
never forget the universal rule of the order of things: People Will Not Read It
signs at stores? émail? menu ?? instruction ? post online ? caption with andswer to question ? group hand outs ??? street sign ??? no. The Written Word Is The Enemy
#The number of compliments i have gotten for reading a thing
The ability to occasionally Read A Thing will make you a hero in your workplace, especially if it is for example an error message that tells you what you need to do differently, or instructions on unjamming a printer.
how dare you say we put jam in the printer
Ok reblogging this again because story time.
I work in tech, and much of what I do is support sales reps within the company by resolving errors with the software they use.
There is one sales rep who, every single time I send her a message or email with extremely specific instructions that will resolve her issue, does something completely different from what I tell her. Every time. Without fail. It is so glaringly obvious that she has never read even a single word that I have written to her.
So one day, she sends me a message that says little more than "(software) is broken, help"
So I do my standard song and dance of asking her what she's trying to accomplish, and what specifically is stopping her from doing that. And eventually, after much unnecessary back and forth, she tells me there's an error message. I ask her to send me a screenshot of the error message. She does.
The error message basically says, "these two required fields are blank. To resolve this, please fill in these two specific fields, and then click save."
So I take a few deep breaths.
Then I lie to her.
I message her back, saying "hey yeah, for some reason it's not loading that screenshot on my end. Could you type out the full text of the error message for me?"
She does.
I ask her if she still needs help.
She does not respond.
I have similar story from tech support.
Client is reporting that Some Thing Program doesn't work. I ask if there's an error message with further information about what's not working. Client says "no". I go over and ask Client to open Some Thing. Client double-clicks on the icon for Some Thing, it starts to boot, an error message dialog flashes up on screen, Client closes error message before I can read it, Thing closes after the error.
"What did that error message say?" I ask.
"What error message?" asks Client.
I tell Client to open the Some Thing again and then not click anything else. Client opens Some Thing, error message appears, Client clicks it away again.
I tell Client to stand up, step away, and give me physical control of the computer. I open Some Thing, start looking at the error message without closing it, and Client says "You should close that." I tell Client that I am reading the error message. Client is apparently accustomed to treating error messages as a kind of spam email that should be deleted as fast as possible, and gets agitated that I'm reading it.
I read the error message. It tells me what the problem is. I fix the problem. Some Thing works now.
---
Later, I start thinking about how such an error message might perhaps be engineered to be more attention-grabbing and close-resistant as a way of making people read it. It's not important for some random program here, but there are more important systems (medical, etc) where it would be reasonable to demand the user's attention because people's lives depend on paying attention to the error message.
But then people with a perverted intellect would still be thinking about ways to avoid reading the message, like dragging it off edge of screen or hiding it behind another window. So maybe the dialog box could have an always-in-front feature to override other windows, and the alert could use the computer's hardware "beep" functionality that can't be switched off by muting the regular sound system, and keep beeping... shit, I realize I'm reinventing pain, and get philosophical about it.
Story from The Past about My Mum:
She was a computer programmer / analyst, a... Long Time Ago. Called in for a system she'd installed before, the office folk said they kept having problems where it Didn't Work Right (no error, a malfunction)
She investigated, and told them that could only happen if they did 3 specific things in a specific order, which they should not ever do.
So, she asked, did they ever do that?
No! Of course not, was the answer.
So she made a couple of small changes, packed up and said that should be fine, but they should call her if there were problems.
The next week
She had a call saying "We're getting a strange error message on the system, can you help?"
She said, of course, can they tell her the error?
And the message was:
"You Said You Didn't Do This"
The Magnanimous Airplane
well, the ears dropped

Me: I think I’ll get another video of me shedding Blaer out. The internet loved it last year
Tito:
this site is actually insane and so amazing for anyone who reads historical cnovels and wants to understand historical context
you can find things like: * this map of chang'an when it was the capital of the tang dynasty
or * this reference on the various measurements and units, their conversions to more widely known western units, and their regional/dynastic variations or * this list of sayings related to marriage
etc etc etc
