You may feel you constantly need to prove yourself. That you’re smart. That you’re knowledgeable. That you’re talented. That you’re skilled. That you’re strong. That you’re virtuous. That you’re hardworking.

It’s exhausting. It’s stressful. And when you fall short and prove that you’re “not good enough” (by whatever standards), it can be frustrating, confusing, even devastating.

In some cases when you prove yourself to be deficient, it can be easy to pick yourself up and try again. You know for a fact that if you keep practicing, you can improve–you have not reached your full potential.

But other times, it feels like you have proven yourself to be fundamentally and irreparably deficient. There is no point in ever practicing, ever trying to improve, because you have proven that you are not good enough, and that’s that.

In fact, you may feel that the best thing to do is to avoid ever proving your deficiency ever again. You failed, or got rejected, or fell short of what you hoped–and that one time was all the proof you needed to write yourself off forever.

This approach assures that you have, indeed, reached your full potential.

Imagine writing a poem and submitting it to several poetry magazines and journals and contests, and receiving nothing but rejections.

You could take this as proof that you are a bad poet. Perhaps it’s objectively true that you’re a bad poet. And if you give up writing poetry, you will stay a bad poet forever.

But if you decide to keep writing and honing your skills, there is no reason why you can’t improve. Today you may prove yourself to be not very good, but in six months you may prove yourself to be a little better, and in ten years you may prove yourself to be excellent.

Give up today, though, and you’ll never have the chance to prove what you can do tomorrow.
