Guess Who Is Coming to Breakfast | Dean & Jane
Jane's parents were away: they had told the girls that they were on a Christmas holiday, just the two of them, but Jane and Lizzie both knew that they were just going to spend a night with their Aunt and Uncle while they looked for cheaper housing options in the town over.
Lizzie had spent the night with Charlotte, and so Jane and Lydia had the house to themselves. It was rare that this happened - Lydia was hardly ever home and Jane can't remember the last time she had stayed in when the parents were away - so Jane had gotten up early to make them scrabbled eggs and blueberry muffins (Lydia's favorite).
She was at the stove when she heard footfalls behind her, "I making eggs! Muffins are in the oven. I didn't expect you to be down before noon, but --" She turned and instead of her sister, there was a man in a t-shirt and boxers, looking just as every bit as confused as Jane was. She had dropped the bowl in surprise, leaving a shattered mess over the kitchen floor.
She realized that she had been naive to think that a night of chocolate ice cream, Love Actually, and in bed by 11 was enough to satisfy Lydia when both the parents and Lizzie were out of the picture. And this had happened one too many times for Jane to believe that he was just a friend Lydia had let sleep on the couch.
"Oh, sorry. I'll -- I'll get that. You must be Lydia's --- friend. I'm her sister, Jane." She paused, "You hungry? I'm making um ... " She looked at the floor, "Well, there will be muffins soon, anyway."
