Me: Loud music that I can control is better than loud noises I cannot control

Me: Loud noises that are rhythmic, familiar, and pleasurable to me are better than sudden ugly chaos 

I will never forget the day when I was drawing, in the front row, with full out colored pencils in one of my 7000 level graduate school courses. And my professor walked by, glanced down, said, “Nice artwork!” and kept lecturing. She knew. She knew it was how I focused on the course material. It was validating and made me feel comfortable, confident, and alert the entire semester.

Doodling is a simple activity that takes very little brain power for most people to do. One reason it happens is because they’re understimulated and the brain needs some sort of activity to focus on. Without something physical to do the brain will turn to it’s other tactic, daydreaming. An activity that regularly distracts their full attention.

I started knitting in university to get through 3 hour lectures. I’d just knit endless lengths of fabric.

Friendly reminder: when people say ‘as long as you tried your best’ it doesn’t mean ‘the best you could possibly have done ever’ it means ‘the best you were capable of at the time.’ Sometimes ‘trying your best’ is just getting out of bed in the morning. Just because you weren’t working yourself to the bone doesn’t mean you weren’t trying your best.
