What gets me about the ending and what it tells us about Devon's headspace going into season 2 is that we see her when she's calmed down. She's cried herself out. It's been long enough since they jumped into hyperspace that Rylee has also cried himself out and succumbed to exhaustion and fallen asleep. So it's been hours and her blood isn't up anymore but she's just been sitting there. Stewing. Rocking her new lightsaber (one that's been soaked in so much bloody history before it came to her) back and forth in her hand, considering it. Looking so quietly intense with her sickly-looking eyes—beginning to be as metaphysically altered by the dark side as Maul's are.
This shot made me JUMP from how fucking scary she looks. The soundtrack is SO ominous, you understand just how deeply she is intentionally submerging herself in the dark side because it feels cathartic to her now.
And then "Alright. I'm ready."
Compare how wildly different in tone this scene is to the one with Barriss kneeling to Vader at the end of TotE Devoted, where Barriss is not embracing the dark side so much as giving into despair that she isn't being allowed any other options, communicating to us that she's going to break from that path and reclaim her identity as a Jedi the moment she's required to actually act as a darksider. That is not what Devon is.
This is the heart of it: "I'm ready" doesn't come in the heat of the moment. The desire for vengeance is something she swore in a fit of passion—but becoming Maul's apprentice is a calm and deliberate choice as she burns with a quiet and seething hatred. It will not be something she reconsiders as the rush fades and she faces the reality of it.
This is not Devon tiptoeing cautiously into the dark side. This is Devon considering her choice deeply before deliberately plunging into the abyss, fully aware of what that abyss entails.
