He stared down at the phone in his hand. What the hell had he been thinking? He wasn’t going to bother Alyssa and Grace with his shit.

It was five to get her side of their hotel room nice and clean and move out onto the second floor balcony while Grace got comfortably settled among plush toys and pillows.
Well… shit. True to her word and even without an answer from him it only took five minutes for his phone to buzz with an incoming caller. For a brief moment his thumb hovered over the voicemail button but then he sighed. He wasn’t that stupid.
He accepted the call with a slight grimace and brought the phone to his ear.
“Hey.”

It was a stormy night in Atlanta (as most of them were), and she could see the clouds rolling in from the balcony overhang. Grace was content to collapse after the long drive to get here, which amounted to an economy priced hotel and not a lot of sleep.
She kept her voice low anyways, a gentle fierceness to it.
"Hi. You wanna tell me what's going on? You know I'll be your emergency contact, but what brought this on?"
He had already been standing outside to send the text. There was no one else in the shitty motel room he had shacked up in but he didn’t like the way his mind had felt trapped indoors. He’d needed the openness. The hand that wasn’t holding the phone held a lit cigarette; a lazy trail of smoke drifted into the night air.
“Nothing’s going on-” Yet. “I just wanted you to know.“
There was a beat then a relented mumble. “You know, just in case.” Alyssa was physically in another state but he could still feel her presence baring down like she was standing in front of him. The fingers holding the cigarette twitched. His eyes were down, guilty gaze fixed on a random spot in the distance on the dirty concrete.

If it was hard to tell if his words helped. The shaking seemed to ease a little but not completely, persisting as it typically did. The girl was a constant shivering, quaking chihuahua compared to her pit bull of a mother, and he still wondered how that drastic difference in temperament had happened.
“Okay, got a good grip on it?” He checked the tiny fingers wrapped around the handle and figured they were probably as good as they were going to get. “Right. Now hold tight and swing it in front of you.” Hopefully when doing so she would notice that the world did not in fact explode like she seemed to expect, and would ease up.

She backs up slightly; her own precaution about accidentally getting Uncle David from this practice swipe. Yeah he would be okay and not say anything about it, but the thought of hurting someone Grace considers her family wasn't one she wanted to become real.
Grace moves her arm towards herself and with the sharp edge aiming outward. Deep breaths. She's already done the first step of having a knife in her hands, and she can do this too. It takes the girl a bit to build up the internal courage to do it, eventually she straightened out her arm out. Her eyes watching the blade as it moved in tandem.
It almost felt like those toy swords. Except there's actual metal weight to this; not that airy plastic or foam feeling.
David allowed a small smile at the sight of Grace finally gathering up enough courage to swing the blade. He let her go at it for a few seconds so she could get used to the weight and feel. “See, not so scary is it?” He patted her shoulder in encouragement but a few moments later gently caught her hand to get her to stop. He didn’t want her arm to tire out already.
“Okay, so now let’s say you’ve gotten into a fight. There’s some guy that wants to hurt you. Do you know what you should do first?”

Oops. He could tell by her shaking that he had laid it on a little too thick again. Somehow he always felt like he was fumbling with this kid. He made an effort to soften his expression and crouched down beside her, placing a hand on her shoulder. “Relax kid, it’s not going to jump up and bite ya.” He adjusted her fingers so she was holding the knife a little more securely. “You’ve already done step one- point the pointy end away. Now just hold onto it for a minute.” And relax, if at all possible, relax.

Her arm slowly shifted, making the knife point away from David. Keeping a grip on the handle but also trying to make sure it wasn’t too tight. Relax. There’s no reason not to doubt him. Grace had been doing her best to make the shaking lessen. She could easily drop this if she wasn’t careful.

A strike of fear instantly hit Grace the moment the switchblade in Uncle David’s hand clicked to reveal the sharp edge. When one of her hands grabbed the handle, the shaking in it was impossible to miss. To think that people used this as their weapon of choice.
Grace looked back up from her hand and clearly saw the glare on his face. The unsaid threat was made clear to her.
