Trotsky contrasts selfish and idealist rivalry with revolutionaries competing to do the most good. It's plausible that we will compete in more humane ways in a socialist future, but it's not obvious that what makes it more humane is replacing selfishness with altruism. Competing over who can break their back serving society makes a certain strained sense in a civil war. It makes less sense in conditions of nominal peace. Reputational competition need not be altruistic to be useful to socialism.
