I watched a tiktok by a school teacher who hasn't assigned any homework in 12 years a few days ago and I'm still thinking about it because she made some great points. I'll link it here but it's in German.
I'll go ahead and summarize the arguments she made as to why she thinks homework sucks:
It doesn't actually promote self-sufficiency. Kids who don't struggle with organization and discipline at school will also not struggle with their homework, but kids who do struggle at school and need more help will also struggle while trying to get anything done at home.
It's inherently unfair/unequal. Children's home situations are so very different, some kids have their own desk and computer in a quiet room and at least one parent around who has the time & knowledge to help them plus the financial means to hire a tutor, while some children don't even have their own room and their parents might not be around or lack the education and means to be of any help at all.
AI exists and can be used to do almost all homework and most kids use it.
Assigning and checking homework and enforcing consequences when students don't do it is a waste of class time and creates an unpleasant atmosphere.
And also a very important point that many people in the comments made based on their experiences as both students & parents of students:
In addition to being a huge stressor for children and bad for their mental health, it also puts a lot of strain on the parent-child relationship. In cases where a parent already has a tendency to be abusive, conflicts over homework can quickly escalate and lead to abuse, which can then cause trauma around learning itself.
i get that americans love their cultural imperialism, but it really does piss me off that june is βinternationalβ pride month just because something happened in the united states.
in aotearoa, june isnβt our pride, itβs theirs. marsha p johnson and sylvia rivera are their historical figures, not ours. the phrase that βyou owe your rights to Black trans womenβ is true there, but here we owe our rights to (mostly) MΔori historical figures. i have the freedoms i do because of the legacy of an entirely different set of people operating in an entirely different context at entirely different times.
But because of american cultural imperialism, most queer people in Aotearoa donβt even know our own queer history. Carmen Rupe, Ngahuia Te Awekotuku, the Dorian Society, Gillian Laundon, Georgina Beyer, and the Wolfenden Association are some of our queer history. We should know their names! we should know what they did for us! but because of the power of the american imperial machine, we donβt.
our national pride month should be july, the month that the Homosexual Law Reform Act passed in 1986. our two largest cities hold their pride festivals in february and march, respectively. american queer history has very little (or nothing, depending on who you ask) to do with our queer history. anecdotally, from my own queries, queer youth in aotearoa know more about american queer history than our own.
anyway, happy pride, americans. iβm truly sorry that most of you donβt see the negative impact your nationβs culture has on the rest of the world. and to the rest of the world reading this, try searching for your own country and cultureβs queer history, donβt accept the american narratives as your own. we deserve our own histories divorced from the cultural hegemony of the USA.

A lot of the time I look at myself in the mirror, see a disheveled little rat with neuroses, and think, "damn, what a turn off, how could anyone find *that* attractive?". But what I gotta remember is that someone out there is looking for the chihuahua of their dreams
Like. You know how coyotes and badgers sometimes hunt together, cause of their different skill sets? The badger is compact and close to the ground and can tunnel, while the coyote can run fast and see farther and can corral prey?
I'm saying maybe you're not icky, you're just a badger, and you don't wanna buddy up with a badger like you. Maybe you're looking for your coyote. And that coyote? They're not hooking up with coyotes.
So like. Appreciate what you have, I guess. And kill a large prey animal some time
Confidence
I fear I don't get it
Like. I don't find me attractive so I worry that nobody can. But like. Other people like other things. So maybe while I'm wishing I was different, someone else is looking for exactly who I am right now, even if I don't like it. You know?
You're not unattractive: you're simply someone else's type.
