Adding RAM to Acer Aspire 5253 - Users Beware!
I took the plunge and bought an Acer Aspire 5253 after years of educating Dell support personnel about how their laptops work and internal processes could be improved. Read my eight month effort to get support from Dell. After all, how much worst could the support be?
I've added/replaced RAM and hard disks from numerous laptops so I've seen a fair amount of designs for the memory and/or hard disk cover. The Aspire 5253 is one of the most unconventional designs I've seen. The roughly 11 inch by 3 inch cover is for both the memory and the hard disk. There are two screws holding down the cover. However there are 11 thin plastic tabs that hold the cover in place (two on each end, 4 and 5 along the length of the cover). Unless you know that those tabs exist you'll never get the cover off without breaking it.
I realized this right away and contacted Acer support. It seemed like a poor design and prone to breakage - better Acer tells me how it is designed before I blindly try to remove it. I know the customer is allowed to upgrade the RAM because the generic user guide instructions say "The RAM memory on this notebook can be replaced by the customer." Therefore, it seems logical that an Acer customer should be able to ask for instructions on how to remove the cover. After all, other Acer models have instructions provided on removing the memory cover (e.g, Acer 5000). Guess what I get back? You must contact customer support and pay ... Acer strongly recommends you do not remove the cover. I ask why other models have instructions but Aspire 5253 does not - this is the link I got in reply - system specification of Aspire 5253. I'm not sure what this has to do with the memory cover. Well at least the support person got the correct model # even if it is irrelevant to the question. I gave up after 4 tries.
Verdict: Acer Support is trying to beat Dell Support to the bottom for making the least sense in its replies. I long for the day when a customer support rep will actually answer your question. I must say that once I got through to someone knowledgeable in Dell I got straight answers even if it took months to resolve. On the plus side for Acer, they do respond within half a day. But overall, Dell edges Acer on penalty kicks (for you soccer fans).
Conclusion: Unless you are comfortable flexing a thin plastic cover, I suggest you get a laptop technicians to help you take the cover off. It can be done and even if you break one of the thin tabs (you likely will) there are other tabs holding it in place. But it is a bit nerve-wracking.
Thanks to the Notebook Review forum post (and my laptop tech good buddy) for posting a picture of the Aspire 5253 memory cover. Acer could have saved me a lot of grief by posting a picture like this. But then if I were a designer, would I want to display such handiwork? Separate covers seem to be a more logical solution.

Limassol, Cyprus - September 3-5, 2011
TRACK: Health Informatics
Track Chairs:
Luca Buccoliero, Bocconi University, Italy
Constantinos S. Pattichis, University of Cyprus, Cyprus
Healthcare is an important challenge facing all nations in the Mediterranean as well as across the world. Developed and developing nations alike are facing the challenge of controlling rising costs while at the same time increasing quality of care, patient safety, and access. Given the promise of Information systems to address these challenges, the healthcare industry has embarked towards a wide spectrum of automation (e.g., electronic medical/health records, computerized provider order entry, clinical decision support systems, telehealth applications, and more). The objective of the Healthcare track is to promote exchange of knowledge on the use of Information Systems for healthcare in the region and beyond. We welcome papers that examine the role of IS in addressing technical, economic, behavioral, strategic, organizational, and policy issues pertaining to healthcare. Submissions can focus on various diverse perspectives including providers (hospitals, physicians), policy makers (e.g., government), insurance companies, and patients. Theoretical, empirical, and policy-oriented contributions from a variety of theoretical and methodological perspectives are welcome.
Examples of topics include but are not limited to:
Adoption, implementation, use, and impact of Electronic health record systems (EHR, EMR, EPJ) in the region
Clinical decision support systems (CDSS) and real-time analytics: lessons learned in the region
Adoption, implementation, use, and impact of Computerized Provider Order Entry Systems
Adoption, implementation, and use of telemedicine for improved access to healthcare
Adoption, Implementation, and Use of Healthcare IT by hospitals, clinics, and physicians in the region
Automating provider workflow in multi-language settings, difficult political, economic, or social environments
IT-enabled mechanisms that provide greater access to and models for healthcare delivery in the region
Successful regional standards, policies, and practices
Role of IS in addressing coordination issues among providers, physicians, laboratories, and insurers
Assessing the role, impact, and methods of using IS for detecting and preventing clinical errors
Impact of IT adoption and use on healthcare efficiency, cost, and quality
Use of IT (electronic communities, etc) in clinical trials
Computer based simulation and modeling for healthcare treatment, training, and optimization
Models, methodologies, and standards for various types of healthcare IT

Appointments for the Emergency Room?
The Los Angeles Times has an article "Making an appointment for the emergency room a growing trend". My first impression of the title - make an appointment for an emergency? Thinking about it - makes sense somewhat - sometimes it is after hour care that can't wait for the next morning (or over a weekend).
The article suggests it is beginning to catch on but of course hotly debated (as it seems anything in health care). It makes sense - some load balancing (although nature of emergency room can't predict two hours ahead what load will be).
I couldn't find anything published in academic circles. The only mention of appointments was a 1993 study that suggested most emergency room visits could be addressed in 3 days with primary care (IF they had access to it).

There is a fracture; I need to fix it
Physicians have a viral video of their own called Orthopaedics vs Anaesthesia - the tagline "There is a fracture; I need to fix it" ignoring the fact that the patient has failed to respond to resuscitation.
The humor in this video has spawned similar ones such as Anesthesia vs Neurosurgery. The entire genre is self-deprecating but more than a shred of truth (read the comments on Youtube). These videos serve as a segue to renewed interest in defining what is healthcare. For example, Surgeons’ Decisions and the Financial and Human Costs of Medical Care in NEJM.
If you want to learn about the technology behind the animations go to xtranormal where "if you can type you can make a movie". The Orthopaedics vs Anaesthesia video is currently the #3 in views for xtranormal releases.

What Does Reach Mean?
Definition: "Reach is the total number of people who have taken action — viewed or clicked — on the content in your feed." Reach aggregates your subscriber base that is actively engaging with your content and people viewing your content beyond your known subscriber base (e.g., news filter). Feedburner Help
The screenshot shows an average of three subscribers but more important a reach of five. While having a minimum number of subscribers is important, it is who you reach that is most important for your blog.

No Jobs in BIDS Track - NOT
Enrollments in the IS curriculum around the world took a nose dive after the internet bubble burst. But the jobs have come back. I'm not sure why the students haven't. Here are some career tidbits:

Did you know that Computer/Network Security Consultant is the #8 Best Job in 2009?

Interpreting Google Analytics Top Content
I hope you find the top content screenshot one of the most interesting ones. GA lists the first five so you need to click down into the view that lists all pages of indexed content. This screen capture shows you my first seven from last month. As I've said earlier, most visitors are coming straight to the home page which lists the ten newest posts. If you look at my blog home page, I'm now up to three pages of posts! I'm proud of my Google Doodles post as this was tweeted twice (first was me). It has been my most popular post last month (aside from the home page). I expect that some of these recent posts will get much more traffic as the December 10th deadline approaches. Hope these have been helpful.
For more examples, see the Screenshot page on the course website. See also earlier post on Reading Feedburner Data.
