Danganronpa Angel/Devil meanings behind each Character alignment
In the spirit of Christmas, I feel like going over why I think these characters were given their specific Angel/Devil alignments based on this one post I made about the Danganronpa Angel/Devil merch.
Nagito - Fallen Angel/Seraph
Kokichi - Light/Good Devil
I think the reason why Makoto is a Seraph is obvious. He is the Ultimate Hope. Hope is considered to be an absolute good in the Danganronpa world and since Makoto is an Ultimate for that, it would make sense for him to be one of the highest ranking angels.
In THH, Kyoko played a crucial role in trying to expose the mastermind (Junko) and trying to one-up Junko to put a stop to her Despair. Her detective abilities helped saved Makoto and the remaining survivors which makes it very fitting for her to be an Angel.
I think what makes Byakuya a Devil is how in THH, he was a cold-hearted elite who looked down on the lower classes. He initially saw the killings as just a game for him to win, to the point that he sabotaged the crime scene of Chihiro's death for his own amusement. This kind of mindset derived from how he grew up believing that the world is a dog-eat-dog world, and that he must do whatever it takes to keep winning.
Towards the end of the game though, he eventually changed this behavior and developed more respect towards his classmates, but he still kept his attitude.
I recall seeing Kodaka saying in an interview that he wants Makoto to live on carrying the burden of Hope while Hajime lives on carrying the burden of Despair. I think Hajime being a Devil is attributed by that.
I think another reason why Hajime is a Devil is because in SDR2, he was the mastermind who planted the Junko virus in the Neo-World Program to start another killing game.
He was never a Remnant of Despair, but he became acquainted with the Remnants when he entered the Neo World Program. He never "led" the Remnants but more like the Remnants somehow gathered alongside him to follow the plan of agreeing to go in the Neo World Program with the Junko A.I virus injected. According to what Kodaka said in a Q&A session in early 2025, Nagito had completely turned into a subordinate of Izuru. There are many ways to interpret what that meant since class 77th's time as Remnants was never really delved into. Hopefully 2x2 will explore this further.
Then in DR3, Hajime (now merged with Izuru) became their spokesperson, and during that time, the Remnants were cleansed by the Neo-World Program and are no longer under Junko's influence. He intentionally allowed himself and the former Remnants to be seen by the world as "villains".
Nagito Komaeda - Fallen Angel/Seraph
I think the reasons why Nagito is a Seraph is because of 2 things. Firstly, Nagito was designed to be an inverse of Makoto and since Makoto is a Seraph in this AU, it makes sense for Nagito to follow suit. Secondly, Nagito's extreme belief and obsession with Hope can also qualify him as a Seraph... or maybe it's just that those with Ultimate Luck are blessed to become Seraphim.
As for why Nagito is depicted here as a Fallen Angel/Seraph, I think it's because he was one of the Remnants of Despair who was influenced by Junko despite hating her. I think he became a Fallen when he became a Remnant, because he is wearing that chained collar that he wore in UDG.
It can also be that Nagito's Hope obsession was extreme, so extreme that he was willing to commit Despair for the sake of Hope. Another thing to consider is that his dangerous luck can bring death and misfortune to others, so you can say that he is pretty much an "Angel of Death"
Nagito being a Fallen Seraph in particular makes him similar to Lucifer who was also a Fallen Seraph in religious texts.
It was thanks to Chiaki's influence that helped the former Remnants and Hajime stay on the right path. During the final trial in SDR2, she helped Hajime break out of his indecisiveness and bring new resolve to his classmates.
It was also thanks to her influence that Izuru began to question what Junko said to him and learned that Hope can also be unpredictable. Because she was able to bring Hope in others, it makes sense that she's an Angel here.
I think her cute pixel wings can represent that she is the Ultimate Gamer and that she was an A.I during SDR2.
Even though it was revealed around the end of V3 that Kaede didn't kill Rantaro, I think what makes her a Devil is that in V3, she willingly plotted a murder in Chapter 1. Her plan failed yes, but her murder intent was there. She resolved herself into killing the mastermind, thinking that it was the only way to stop the killing game and escape from the academy. But unfortunately her attempt has put the killing game in motion instead.
Kokichi Ouma - Light/Good Devil
Kokichi used his lies to make everyone believe that he is an evil villain who thinks the killing game is fun. As the Ultimate Supreme Leader, it turned out that the "evil" organization that he led was actually a group that does harmless pranks. In fact, Kokichi hates killings and murder. It explained why he kept antagonizing Maki, the Ultimate Assassin. He even told Kaito that thinking that the killing game is "fun" was a lie that helped him cope.
Additionally, in Salmon mode, when you make Shuichi choose a movie about criminal organizations, Kokichi would hate it, having this to say:
Throughout V3, Kokichi's been secretly doing things behind the scenes that helped support his classmates into uncovering the mysteries of the academy. This was probably in an effort to put an end to the killing game.
So I think the reason why Kokichi is a Devil is because he is a trickster who used his lies to make everyone think that he is a evil villain. But he actually aligns himself more towards the morally good, which is why his outfit's light color scheme is the same as the Angels. He is a Good Devil who would side with the Angels.
After Kaede's death, Shuichi promised to carry on her wish and continue to strive for the Truth. His discoveries of the truth has helped saved his non-blackened classmates multiple times from being executed during class trials. He also helped stopped the series of killing games from continuing for good. So it would make sense that he is a Angel.
So those are my thoughts about the Angel/Devil alignments. Have a Merry Christmas! 🎁🎄
