HOW TO GET YOUR NEW SLAVES FIELDREADY?
It's a centuries-old problem for slaveholders, from the owners of Roman latifundia to those of American plantations in the Antebellum South. You've just purchased a dozen or so of brandnew muscular male slaves at the slavemarket in the market town nearby, young, healthy, and vigorous, selected for their suitability for performing long hours of hard physical forced labor each day.
 They've often been brought from far away and only just been deprived of their freedom, completely untrained for their new task. Now, after purchasing them, you've marched them to your plantation, all chained together to a coffle by their neck or hands.
Because they've only recently been enslaved for the first time in their lives, not yet accustomed to their slave chains, a certain amount of rebelliousness is to be expected at first, including escape attempts.
How do you turn them into usable and obedient workers, real slaves, who learn to toil on command? How, with other words, can you get your new slaves fieldready?
A long time ago I found some very useful advice on the Internet from a certain Master slave Trainer Jeb, which I copied then and now present partially below. Although he studied the problem on behalf of a fictive (?) modern slave society, its content is of timeless value. It did run like this (Iâve only made some shortcuts and little alterations to make the text after that more clear):Â
Regular readers of my column will know I often visit the topic of maximizing slave labor. Each year our nation is deprived of nearly 11.5 million slave hours of labor (Source slave Statistical Manual â 2011.) The vast bulk of these lost hours are due to slaves in initial training, and due to the seasonal effects of weather idling slaves.
While I think there is a lot that could be done to speed training, the focus of this article will be on preparing new slaves for the field. Since the vast majority of the newly enslaved will not come from the countryside, they are not only unfamiliar with brutal farm/ranch labor, but have soft feet and hands and the whites are pale skinned. As 14-hour days are normal on the fields, they have to get used to that gradually.
They arrive after days of cattle car transport to what to them is total desolation. They are tired, confused, filthy, and generally look pitiful. Now the worst thing you can do is feel sorry for them. They are fresh from training and the last thing they need is to be allowed to think there will be any slack.
Have not only your regular slavedrivers, but also your special whipmaster on hand when your new slaves arrive. Each will do well to take âtwelve of the bestâ on the whipping post.
Only then should they be watered and fed. This is important, new arrivals must not be put on a regular work coffle for at least a week. All that will do is take a good coffle and make it into a demoralized, poor performing labor unit, as they will have to carry the new slave.
Much better to coffle all the new slaves together, with heavy iron collars around their necks, forged into one unit by short, no-less-heavy chains. Always be prepared for strong emotional reactions from a new slave when he is first fitted with his slave collar and chained to the coffle. It is usually only at that point that a slave truly realizes that he is now indeed 100% a slave for the rest of his life.
Then work them at various tasks in the morning, and late afternoons only. For instance have them dig irrigation or drainage ditches or they can clear land or pick rocks. This can also be done in pairs as draft animals, with head and hands securely locked in a heavy wooden yoke, in the beginning perhaps just for one hour, but after some severe training finally of course all day long.
As the sun gets high, move them to a barn or other shed. There they can perhaps move bags of cement from one end to the other. Then, when the slaves are to be exposed to the sun again, you can have them drag those across the road.
The idea is to build their endurance, get their skin used to the sun, develop teamwork, and to give you a chance to assess each slave as to labor and eagerness to obey. Meanwhile, bullwhips are heavily used to motivate and to stimulate the necessary fundamental change of the often still rebellious mindset of the new slaves.
Increase exposure to sun about 30 minutes a day for nice brown slaves.
In no case should they have contact with the other slaves. They must learn that getting out to a regular coffle is something they will earn by backbreaking labor. Coffle life, they will see, is a big step up and they will want to labor until they drop to get coffled.
This is not the time to spare punishment. Offering slaves a reward for good work is always a mistake. They must know a full days labor is the norm and anything less will result in punishment.
Suggested punishments for new slaves are:
Punish all for the crime of one. Extra hours of labor is good for mass punishment.
Turn the offender over to your whipmaster. Make sure the others watch.
Restrict food to half or no rations. Do not hold back water for obvious reasons.
After a week (in some cases two) they will be ready to be formally coffled. Try to break them up on different coffles, so chain them by their collar between two obedient slaves who are already broken long ago and have completely internalized their main duty as slaves to toil on mere command.
If you have noticed that two slaves have become friends, definitely do NOT put them on the same coffle. Adjusting to hard labor is something each slave must do alone, amidst slaves who already are used to that. New slaves thus soon will learn that to avoid the bullwhip, they should quickly integrate with the team and toil as hard as all the other slaves.
It is unrealistic to ban the coffle from nightly gang raping of the new arrival. Soon enough the novelty will wear off, and itâs best to just look the other way. At the same time, you must make it clear that the entire coffle is being held responsible for the new slave being able and ready to work each day. Make it clear if the new slave canât work, the ENTIRE coffle will undergo punishment, and will lose the slave, with no reduction in the labor expected of the coffle as a whole.
The temptation to put a newly arrived slave to labor immediately is powerful. Resist this urge, be patient, and make your new slaves FIELDREADY.
