i know it's been forever — i've had significantly less muse for sloan than i expected, probably because i've just been so busy on top of recording sessions, but we have our final rehearsal tonight, for my fav episode... so i will probably be back sooner rather than later lol

warm laughter is echoed with the vorta's humor, && sloan grins despite themself. sorry, paris. i feel bad making you the butt of a joke. i'll make it up to you. "well, what do you know?" it's impossible to hide their delight at this development. "you take such good care of us." it's a private little thank you of their own, && they listen as zeveth goes on, a curious expression sliding over their face.
"i see. i recall you mentioning at one point that your eyesight is rather poor ; naturally, sonic resonance would be heightened. well, there are certain sounds that to the human ear are quite pleasant, && on the contrary, others that are deeply unpleasant, or completely inaudible. && yet to a dog, or a bat, it's their natural frequency of communication. i imagine it's the same for vorta. i would be happy to offer potential sounds that might resonate, or to hear any samples you have — come to think of it, i don't think i've heard your language in its raw form, without an instant translator... is it much different from human speech?"
production for TSM officially kicked off last night with rehearsal for the re-record of our first episode, which means my brain is back in sloan-mode. i'm gonna see if i can't be here some for real now.

a grin is offered, eyes alight with an almost playful glint, && sloan extends their hand to him, as if this is a friendly yet formal business arrangement. in a way, it is, but then again, everything is, in sloan’s world. they’re always working, always reaching for the next opportunity ; a social call is never JUST a social call, no matter how amiable. “i’m glad you feel that way. that’s kinda what we do here.” they sit back down. “i’ve listened to some of your logs — fascinating stuff, && some REALLY interesting sounds. i wanted to ask if you’d be interested in being a... partner of sorts, to the museum. i’d love to have real recordings of what you’re finding out there. we could set you up with equipment, the whole nine. what do you think?”

“it seems like paris is never here when you visit. i do apologize for that, you must be starting to wonder if they even exist.” sloan laughs a little, fixing up two cups of tea, one of which they slide across the paper-scattered desk to zeveth, && sits down, resting their chin in their hand ; the closest thing they’ll get to relaxed possibly ever — they try, at least, to not be so wired when they have company. hence the tea, decaf instead of coffee. “paris is just a little — squeamish, when it comes to the extraterrestrial,” they explain with a laugh, “so they tend to make themself scarce when they know i’ve got non-human guests. but you HAVE to tell me about what you’re working on. if it’s not classified, i’d love to get a recording, if i can find the time. again, i’d send paris, but. you know.”
▓ ⫷ AUDIO FILE RECORDED ⫸ ; @wrensfeatheredpen — nora : Nora wasn’t quite sure how she’s gotten to that particular room — only that she’d gotten there. The thought lingered on why, exactly, she got there, and how, but that was in the past. The narrative didn’t like staying there. It much rather preferred to be in the current moment. Unless, of course, it was a flashback, but this certainly wasn’t one of those. Fiddling with the cuffs of their oversized hoodie, Nora leaned their head into said room, curiosity guiding them further. Surely, they’d find some explanation in there. Without the help of those voices ! She never listened to them, anyways.
they haven’t left their office in some time, && it’s unlike them, to not walk the floors, greet the patrons ; it has always seemed, to the unassuming eye, that sloan has the ability to be anywhere && everywhere, that they have eyes — or rather, ears — in every room, around every corner. ( except the bathroom, they’re always careful to clarify, ‘on account of the fucking’, as vinnie likes to say. ) the rumors are true, but the task takes a mental toll that leaves sloan reeling, with headaches unlike anything they’ve ever experienced. with paris && vinnie gone, away on a field acquisition, the museum feels at once both excruciatingly loud && deafeningly quiet. so sloan is grateful for the company of their current guest, strange as she might be, for the focus they have thrown into helping nora as provided a much welcome distraction from the depths of their own mind, which seems to be pulling them down, down, down, even so.
this room, however, is not open to the public — it is the home of the museum’s artificial life exhibit, closed off indefinitely ever since the incident at quark labs. old computers from the last century, perhaps technically still running programs in the background, whir quietly. at one point, the soft hum would’ve been comforting to sloan, but not now. even if daphni && vincent carter hadn’t been lost, these sounds had been some of the first to be corrupted by the worms, the damage far beyond hope of recovery.
sloan knows nora does not intend to trespass ; she’s hardly a nosy patron, but they don’t know how the volatile && unstable tech might affect her. they hurry down to the floor, taking the steps two at a time, not bothering to shed the oversized dressing gown draped over their shoulders, && it trails along the ground behind them.
“nora?” sloan’s voice is cautious as they poke their head into the room, knuckles rapping lightly on the doorframe. “you okay in there? are — you looking for something? i’m happy to help, but this area is closed off, i don’t want you to get hurt.”
this week is hell for my schedule but i’m GOING to get back here next week. i only have a couple of replies i owe, but feel free to like this if you want to plot && i’ll come bother you in the meantime.

“so, long story short — the quark labs sound isn’t quite ready for public showcasing yet. there’s a lot of red tape around it, so to speak. but it’s going to be an exciting exhibition, && i really do hope we can show it to the world soon.” sloan clears their throat, putting on a smile that is just a little too forced, && turns to greg, their hands clasped behind their back. “anyway, maddy should be out soon — paris has got her sorting through the files from their most recent trip. that will be an excellent exhibit — i’m hoping to hold a special unveiling of the new elliot thompson piece for our top donors, && i’d love to see you there. maddy’s doing great work, by the way. i know paris is hoping to take her out in the field at some point soon.”
i am reading textbooks on psychoacoustics && that is how i am coping with not having time to write while also waiting to start recording the rest of season 1.
