Happy Birthday on August 12th to Dark Romanticist and British Gothic poet Robert Southey, arguably the first English-language poet to employ vampires in creepy, horror-esque, poetic fashion in some of his darker poems (see below), esp “Thalaba: The Destroyer,” from 1801. Robert Southey was broadly talented and was Poet Laureate of England from 1813 until his death.
See photos below for some examples of his inclusion of the undead in his Gothic poetry. Not as well-known as Byron, or Shelley, or Poe, Southey could nonetheless conjure horrors with the best of them in his day. Southey was born August 12, 1774, Bristol, United Kingdom. —0liver Sheppard

[red candles on a silver candelabra in the dark sat behind a red glass skull and a barely noticeable shiny gold object]
Dracula, père et fils (1976) was Christopher Lee’s last turn as the Count. It’s part of my Midnite Film Society VHS Compilation series if you want to check it out.
