We’ve all blown someone off the road for really annoying, danger or just downright rude driving.  I daresay most of us have also given someone the finger for driving that just defies civility.

But how bad would things need to get before you’d stop your car and take out a chainsaw for what someone did to you on the road?

“With more than a million rides per day in 295 cities and 55 countries, continually improving rider and driver safety is the most critical component of what we do.”   That’s a quote from Phil Cardenas, Head of Security at Uber, the awesome mobile app which connects you with a driver in minutes.  

One of the challenges faced by Uber has been how to conduct background checks of its users, given the rapid rate of growth the company has experienced over the past 3 years.  The authorities in New Delhi, for example, prohibited the company from operating there, following the rape of an Uber passenger there.

Uber plans to set up a global safety advisory board to review its policies and employ off-duty police officers to audit safety measures.  It also intends to introduce another new measure in the form of “incident response teams” to deal with problems around the clock for “those critical moments when a rapid resolution is needed”.

The company’s soared recently to more than $40bn, but it has faced hurdles from regulators in many locations and protests from traditional taxi services.

On 30 May 2014, Joshua Tubbleville, a 33-year old insurance executive was shot dead in his car in Dallas, Texas.  The incident happened as he was driving a man home after the two had been on a blind date together.  It appears that robbery was the motive for the shooting as the killer was seen running from the car immediately after it hit a tree.  Joshua Tubbleville was pronounced dead at the scene.

On 7 July 2014, police in Dallas arrested Deric Madison (photo below) for the murder.  Madison’s DNA was found in Tubbleville’s condo, where the two had shared a drink earlier that evening, and further DNA was found also at the crime scene.

Madison killed Tubbleville on the first occasion they met.  This was a crime of opportunity and presumably Madison thought he would never be caught.  

Would Madison have robbed or murdered Tubbleville had Tubbleville taken a SnapMail photo of Madison when they met at the beginning of the evening?  We will probably never know the answer to that question but it is highly likely that Madison would have looked for a target who had not saved his photo on the SnapMail website.  

It would have also made the job of capturing Madison a lot easier had Tubbleville taken a SnapMail photo of him.

Her body has never been found and next year it will be 30 years since a young, intelligent and beautiful estate agent vanished in broad daylight from a busy street in an affluent part of Fulham, South-West London.  The date was 28th July 1986.

Suzy Lamplugh was only 25 years old when she was reported missing after going to an appointment to meet someone who went by the name of "Mr Kipper".  Witnesses reported seeing her arguing with a man outside the house she was due to show him and then getting in to a car.  

Her Ford Fiesta was found one and a half miles way on the evening of her disappearance, but despite a massive search by police no trace of Suzy has ever been found.

Sadly, her mother, Diana Lamplugh, passed away in August 2011 at 75 years of age.

Real estate agents, and indeed anyone who meets strangers for personal of professional reasons, are exposed to risks of this nature on a daily basis.  Thankfully, very few people go through what must be unending suffering for the Lamplugh family as a result of an engagement with a stranger, but there are ways in which a person can reduce further the risk of this type of thing happening.
