Sweet and Salty Snacks

Emerging from thick mists on a barren sea are the tips of impossibly high skyscrapers. Before too long one will see airships lazily drifting high above the waves, moving fluidly to dock at the sky ports which only seem to exist at the tops of the highest buildings. The architecture combines a hundred styles from every culture on the planet, even those long since dead. Beautiful structures of stone and iron fill the metropolis with a sense of storied history.

The street level of the city lacks much of the majesty the skyline shows off from far away. Densely packed city streets are filled with the bustle of working-class citizens. The city is home to an active industry of textiles and artisan crafts. The lower classes seem to have every race present, each more bedraggled than the last. Horse-drawn carriages hurry down cobbled streets as merchants sell unidentifiable meats from roadside stalls.

Ascending above the streets isn't as simple as ascending a stairway or using one of the fancy hydraulic elevation platforms. The caste system here is ironclad. Getting to the higher levels of the city requires one to have proper paperwork and purpose. The upper classes are not fans of interlopers. Once one makes it to the causeways and rooftop gardens of the higher districts, one finds oneself free of the constant smog of the lower city. The packed masses far below can be heard as a gentle din from balconies where well-dressed socialites play their complex interpersonal games and deal in the lives of those they see as beneath them. It is rumored that dark warlocks perform magical rituals on commoners to make them into polymorphed slaves.
